Ok, i tried this in the troubleshooting section and got nowhere, can someone please help me with this? i have a 1984 GMC G2500 vandura, 350, 700R4. Its got a 4pin/3 wire connector on the left side of the tranny, im pretty sure its for the torque converter lockup, i have 3 wires there, one is broken and theres two wires in the connector, no terminals left in the connector for the broken wire, cam somebody tell me what pin this wire goes to? I think its the yellow wire, but every wiring diagram i can find for 1983 and up have an ecm listed and this van does not have an ecm?

I'm no expert, but I have some ideas.

Does the connector on the transmission itself have 4 female pins in it, or just 3?
From what I've seen, 700R4s usually have pin "C" blank like this:

So, based on that, your loose wire would go to the other pin that's not currently being used.
Of course, that's provided that everything else is in order and the whole thing hasn't been modified by a previous owner or whatever.
The absence of the male pin (the one that the wire previously went to) worries me a little.

Maybe someone with more experience could chime in?

thank you, at least that's something, i inherited my van from my grandmother who had it since new, so i highly doubt it had any modifications done to it, it spent the last 10 years parked outside, beside a hedge, and in Canada i'm not too surprised the wire just corroded off with the snow and moisture its been sitting in.

As far as I know every vehicle after 1981 has an ECM, mines under the driver seat. I've never worked on a 700r4 but I believe the overdrive is computer controlled thats why if you put one in a older vehicle you havd to wire it to a speed sensor or manual switch to control overdrive.

Good luck

I know that mine doesnt have an ecm, ive had the van almost gutted, every seat out and the dashboard with no computer, i cant see a computer anywhere, it is a converted camper van so its easy to see behind and under all the seats and stuff, the ecm must be incredibly tiny and hidden somewhere for me not to see any sign of an ecm. Every wire that leaves the engine goes to the guages as far as i can see. And it also has a speed cable from the back of the transmission directly to the speedometer, no speed sensor anywhere, no abs. So i wonder if thats a Canadian thing where they didnt need ecms from 1981 on.

Apparantly, fuel injection started in the 350's in 1982 for the corvette, but this van has a quadrajet on it and its a 1984, also says that ecm's started in 1981 but became more popular in the mid 80's. This is a totally confusing decade for automotive applications from what ive found.

Could be a Canadian thing, I think there were exceptions for heavy trucks for the first few years.
Or a previous owner could have accidentally removed and tossed it all, not knowing what it was or that it is illegal to do so!!! nudge, nudge, wink, wink....

i don't know, i am sure it wasn't removed, it was always serviced and owned by my family, it is the way my grandmother bought it in 1984, if someone wanted to change it from ecm controlled to this, it would take a hell of alot more than just taking it out.

I have a 1988 G van electrical manual on PDF. If you PM me your email I'll send it to you. Anyone else is welcome to also.

Look in the left side wall behind the driver's seat. Sometimes, they put the Spark Control in there. It's technically not an ECM, it's just a spark controller, but it looks just like one. It's about 6" across, 8" long and 2" deep, give or take.

Like someone else said, it could be a Canadian thing or it could be a bastard. I have seen some things I'd never have believed.

Check under the van, in the front (under the front door), on the driver's side, for a harness going up through the floor.

By the way, my 83 GMC had a Rochester 4 barrel and it had the spark control under the seat. The best thing I ever did was rip it out. I had to change the distributor too, but luckily, I had a bunch of them laying around anyway. I also pulled the crappy 700R4 and put in a T350. I never looked back.

It's hard to believe but the tranny is the brains of the operation. GM put all sorts of crazy pressure switches inside to do all sorts of wonderfull things. That's why you can't always take a 700r4 from one vehicle and throw it in another. Vans sold for non commercial use or areas with stiff emissions got the ESC module, Dam thing locks out advance in first gear.
My 84 is wired

Yellow EGR bleed solenoid
Lt. Blu power for trans
Green converter lock up

I still have not looked inside my transmission so who knows. Just stick the wire back in the connector it is clearly labeled A B C D. When you take it off the trans the connector it has a hinged cover that holds the wires in. Have some spare fuses for the gauges fuse.
You will find better info on the web if you search C trucks. They clearly have more support than vans.

If you don't have the pin they are out there try looking for the proper tool to remove the pins. The tool maker usually sells the pins. I have seen it at a local tool shop. There is a orange tail (green wire) hanging lower right of the fuse panel connect a test light to it to check lock up while driving. (it should go out when you apply the brakes)
