Are they a direct bolt on or is the bezel different?

This tail light swap is not a direct bolt it.
a set of flat stock straps will need to be made to mount the older tail lights into the newer holes.
The chrome Bezels on the older style tail lights will hide the seam on the out side of the newer tail light hole

hey Im about to do this conversion on my '94 g20 ! accidentally jumped the gun and cut off one of those big studs on the back of the housing!! oops looks like its time to break out my 110 MIG lol. this is very helpful. i dont have the chrome trim tho, prob gonna feather out the rim of the quarter panel housing with some bondo and just caulk the edges real nice or something, pics to come, thanks for the info!

Looks great Vaz, just about to do my 93 g10. What did you end up using to fill the gaps? Looks like you got a clean install

I haven't done this swap, luckily my 82 already has the old style lenses. I did find this on Facebook a week or two ago though and bookmarked it in case anyone was looking to do this swap. Glad I saved it, hope it helps you.

Per Facebook user "Krispy Chris":

"Thought I would share some tail light progress. I wanted to do a proper conversion and after tracking down NOS housings, I decided to go for it. The first thing I noticed that on the post 84 vans (mines an 89) I noticed the lip is on the outside of the van. As you can see, I began to slowly pry it apart. There are 2-3 spot welds on each side. I used a mix of screw drivers, saw blade and a hammer to break them loose. Once I got it off and began fitting the NOS housing. I currently have it mocked up. I need an extra set of hands to hold it while I smooth out the metal metal lips and make sure it’s straight. I’d hate to have crooked lights!"
