Looking good, that project is on my list of things to do. Invest in a router with a plung bit, would make those recesses a lot easier to cut.

Thanks for all the positive feedback. This turned out better than I initially expected despite making several mistakes along the way. I just wanted to show what was possible for folks who may be considering the same thing.

My objective was to use (mostly) what I had on hand. My router is an ancient Craftsman model and the bits had been sitting on my shelf for ages. I've seen plunge routers used (wish I had one), but mine is just a plain model.

Wood certainly is easier to work with, but it sure makes sawdust like crazy. I tried keeping costs as low as possible, but between the $40 or so I spent on the drill bit and cutting disc (not to mention $50 for the red oak), I spent more than I wanted to, but am happy with the results. Luckily the cork I had on hand from a yard sale score for 50 cents. Hobby store wanted 8 bucks for the same thing!

I'm impressed. Nice job.

When Chris Farley talked about living in a van down by the river, did anybody else think that wasn't such a bad idea?

Man killer job!!!!! I have always wanted and tried my hardest to learn how to work with wood. I envy you guys that can. Must be neat transforming your ideas into reality!!! I have so many ideas in my head, but they never turn out right when I do them. I wish I could build them like the Art Deco period of the mid to late 30's.

And now I just found out, here in Calif. they charge $.01 a foot tax on top of the price and sales tax. That could quickly add up if you are building a home or something bigger. Wood is not cheap here to start with and the tax is to of set the environmental impact fee the state levees on them in the first place. This is suppose to help them compete!!

Which in turn makes my mess ups cost that much more!!!!
