The original rubbers and gaskets were not made to handle synthetics so once the conventional oil is drawn out they start to tighten and "dry rot" so to speak. My van leaks quite a bit more since I've started synthetics so eventually i will need all new gaskets. Otherwise I love the performance I've gained. If you go with synthetics go with a straight 30 weight SAE30 or whatever your motor recommends. usually 5-30 or 10-30.
Gone vannin' I'll call you later.

It might have seemed so for a few people, but there isn't anything chemically to cause it to leak faster or cause the seal to dry. I will look into the SAE library for any research tech papers testing this. I used to be a big conventional oil guy, valvoline, and I still am convention oil person (totally against synthetic oil). But, I realized the need for synthetics, especially on engines that tend to run hot and for vehicles that are under high load, such as our vans. The oil gets hot, the engine gets very hot, and the oil bakes.
But like I said, I will look into the SAE library.

Only thing i don't do synthetic in is the diff. I haven't really dug deep for the reason why but I trust my old man with his advice for the most part. Plus I don't feel like swapping out another axle... Yet.

It doesn't cost much, about 300 bucks. Then you can run synthetic | | | Re: oil weight reccomindations for 77 tradesman 360 | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 28,125 Madman! | Madman! Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 28,125 | I always used straight 30 or 20-50 in my 360's. Had one in my 85 Ramcharger that had over 500k miles on it when I pulled it to do some performance machining. Didn't need it, just wanted more power. | | | Re: oil weight reccomindations for 77 tradesman 360 | Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 523 Likes: 1 addict | addict Joined: Aug 2014 Posts: 523 Likes: 1 | What about a good ZDDP additive for our older flat tappet cam motors? Much less zinc in the new oils I understand which makes these additives a good idea? | | | Re: oil weight reccomindations for 77 tradesman 360 | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | ZDDP is unnecessary. The modern oils are formulated to be backwards compatible and you will be fine. Use a good 5W-30, synthetic if you can afford it.
