I only know of two like her, BONEHEAD and Wolf-Den, plus the factory NEVER made a dually van, so that make them even rarer . . . . right ?

I only know of two like her, BONEHEAD and Wolf-Den, plus the factory NEVER made a dually van, so that make them even rarer . . . . right ? I believe the rarity thing comes from factory made items....I could put a dually under my '93 but it would be considered a modification ... From http://www.gminsidenews.com/forums/f19/gm-full-size-van-dually-106808/"A local organization here in town has a fleet of GM full size cargo vans which have duallies in the rear. Is this an actual option from the factory or is it available from an aftermarket upfitter or whatever? The vans are quite unique because of the dually." next person.. "Duals have been available on cutaways and high-cube vans for decades, but if you are talking about the regular van body with duals (and it sounds like you are), then I've never seen that before and I really doubt it's coming from GM that way. " Re: GM Full Size Van Dually Ah, I think I may have an explanation! "The UK and Canada require dual-rear wheels on vehicles that transport more than 10 passengers. The U.S. has no such requirement. In fact, up until 2006, the vans were NOT required to be tested at all. Based on the feedback we’ve received from those who have retrofitted their vans, Van Angels believes the retrofitting of an existing van to be a viable solution." This from a van-safety advocacy group. http://www.vanangels.org/solutions/dual-wheels/ So this could very well be a factory option in Canada if it is indeed required by law. Fester what is the 1st digit on your vin...is it a 2 (for canada made)? | | | Re: Rare Vans? | Joined: May 2007 Posts: 9,854 Likes: 8 Festerus Vannimus | Festerus Vannimus Joined: May 2007 Posts: 9,854 Likes: 8 |

It has the axles and drivetrain out of a Ford ambulance put under a standard van. Not a factory option in the US from any make ever that I know of, but Canada is quite possible.
This is an interesting topic. From the viewpoint of what vans are the most collectable to vanners, I agree, no door or 8 door early, Streetvan, and the Nomad is gaining popularity. Also custom 70's survivors. Radicals are sometimes sought after, but the modifications done by one person, are rarely beloved by another.
From the viewpoint of what vans are collectable to non- vanners, I would say the 70's customs have a nostalgia to those that have not been doing this all along, retro sells. Earlies are also well liked at car shows, but I don't see car guys lining up to buy them.
Which brings me to my take on this. The viewpoint of what vans will be worth money in the future. None, unless a large growth in interest in vans sprouts up with the general public. Vanners love vans, and spend all our money on vans, until we own as many as we can. When one comes up for sale, we're broke and/or out of parking spots. Unless people with money suddenly decide they want a van, no matter how cool or rare we are the only ones buying them, and not like hotcakes.
There has been some national exposure to vans on TV lately, but with no mention of the sport of vanning, and not speculation announced that "these will be the next hot thing" to fan the flames. We've had some fantastic heartfelt coverage of vans and vanning but with limited exposure.
I'm hoping some celebrity promotes vanning, or a TV show features one as prominently as the A-team did. I have given up on national magazines. Maybe an existing vanner will become famous, and drive up to the red carpet in a flared out muraled van with zoomies, that would be epic.

Here again it boils down to individual taste. Then if you approach it from the direction of rare, certainly production numbers would play a role. Right now early models are starting to bring some big bucks, at least what I consider to be big. If you are a vanner, you'd most likely want a period correct van but if you were a collector, you may look for a bone stock restoration. Again, it's a debate that has many answers. | | | Re: Rare Vans? | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 1,475 old hand | old hand Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 1,475 | For me it would have to be a windowless '78 Dodge shorty with barn doors. Had one, let it go. Though I always dreamed of big-block power and a floor-shifted manual trans., as well as all the factory exterior trim (body lines, windshield, grill surround. Now that would be a rare bird. What I wouldn't give for a time machine, I'd go back to 1978 and order one exactly how I wanted it.

It was a beauty too. | | | Re: Rare Vans? | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 753 old hand | old hand Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 753 | It's kind of sad, but it is getting harder to find 80's conversion vans in good condition. Most of them have become work vans with ladder racks and the seats removed. I know they aren't true customs but they definitely have a place in vannin' history.
When Chris Farley talked about living in a van down by the river, did anybody else think that wasn't such a bad idea?
