When I saw the subject title "collectable vans" which are toys, it made me think. Which vans (real ones) do you think are the rarest? I often see people comment about Dodge Street Vans and then there are no door and 8 door models, but I wonder which are the most sought after?

That's a good question. Good Corvair vans are hard to come by.

Well, I had a 70 GMC no door that as close as I could nail down production numbers was one of about a dozen.

Randy,
I've always wondered that myself, in our sport what would be considered rare and or valuable.

There are the early models that were configured differently like no doors, 8 doors, display and a few other models that were rare.

There are the early conversion models like Headrest, Gerring, LRP, Hopcap and many of these were really a one of a kind when it came to muraling and I see these getting big dollars these days like the Dodge that went to CA, someone I know in NY with Hopcap conversion was just offered over 10,000 and there is another one in NJ for around 12,000 and lets not forget the coolest and rarest conversion ever made THE DENIM MACHINE.

There are the corporate specialty built vehicles like Ford Chateau, Dodge Streetvan, and Chevy Nomad / GMC Gypsy, these are all pretty hard to find in decent shape and in my opinion you can equate them to stuff like SS Camaros, Eldorado Biarritz or any special order production vehicles from the factory with nicer trim levels.

There are also the radical customs that you know all too well and those are also bringing big bucks these days and probably the hardest to find especially built right and still in decent shape but they're out there.

My personal favorite or is the 60's & 70's styles vans with modern drivelines like Ken's California Special these are vans that can be driven from truckin to truckin reliabley and with decent fuel milage so they're practical vannin vans.

What I do see lots of interest in is period correct 70's custom survivor vans of all types. I was at Carlisle this weekend and there were several in attendance, a dodge owned by Mike Tufano from NJ that was unbelievably period correct and drew lots of attention along with Scott's Emerald Express Chevy and Kevin's Armed & Crazy Dodge, this aspect of vans seems to be so popular that there is a company in Japan making period correct 70's vans.

Another thing I have noticed is the prices on ALL types of vans on the rise along with parts and accessories that used to be available, have you seen the price of portholes, sidepipes, fiberglass, rims and other 70's items that we used to grab off the shelves and throw on our vans??? It's crazy but in a good way.

I also think were about to see an even bigger increase in van interest and van prices do to their popularity on shows like Overhaulin, Gas Monkey, Counting Cars and reality shows like these.

You know in most other automotive cultures there is always the holy grail of cars or brand model favorites, SS Chevells, Hemi Cudas, 65 Mustangs, 57 Chevys Mercedes Gullwing Coupe, 65 Ford Cobra etc. and the more original the more valuable so that being said will vans follow suit, is there a model / style worth more will originality hold value?

Maybe the rarest vans aren't the most sought after or the most valuable.

Sorry I don't have an answer but this is a great question and maybe someone else does or collectively we can come up with the /an answer.

Just remember- rare does not necessarily mean desireable or big bucks. I only got $750 for my 70 no door, and it was a driver.

I feel a "rare Van" would be a homemade custom. There's just not a lot of them out there anymore....
