I have a 400 turbo trans that has had some water ingress so I'm looking to get it rebuilt. The numbers I'm getting back from transmission shops isn't that encouraging... So I looked up what parts are required and the material costs for the refurb kit aren't that expensive. It is most likely the labour costs that is the lions share of a trans rebuild.
So I found a TH400 rebuild video on youtube and I see a teardown is a pretty involved project, but not rocket science...

Have any of you rebuilt your own transmission? Besides working in a super clean area and measuring everything and ensuring everything is within spec before reassembly, is there a reason why a transmission shop should get my hard earned cash? Are there specific tools required? Expensive test equipment needed?

Does the torque converter need to be rebuilt after water ingress or can it simply be flushed through?

I am lucky. I live far away from USA where everything is cheap, but I have one of the best car builder living in my town.

He has been working over 20 years with American cars, fixing them for living. Before that he did dragracing.

He told me that he wont do transmissions anymore. He can, but he wont. There is so much to know and so many things that go wrong even that you are very careful.

Other guy here does those, he has been doing it for atleast 30 years, maybe closer to 40 years. He is good and thats why he isnt cheap. The reason tranny fixing costs lot of $$$ can be easily understood.

I am pretty sure that there is smart/good vanners here who can fix their own transmissions.

I wouldnt do it... smile
