Increased performance would be great but I'm not trying to win races. Increased economy would be good. It will be an everyday, multipurpose van, I guess.
I was thinking of putting headers and a single side pipe (2's great for v8 but personally think it's to much on a 6), unless someone with knowledge could advise against. Want it to sound throaty but not obnoxious. I also want to take off the original air box and fit a better looking k&n pan style but not sure what to do with all the pipes feeding back into it?
Any recommendations worth the money would be appreciated, distributors etc.
Thanks | | | Re: 84 G10 250 | Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 753 old hand | old hand Joined: Apr 2012 Posts: 753 | MSD ignitions do help MPG's but not a lot. Header and exhaust will help if you can keep your foot out of it. How hard is it to bolt a 700R4 onto the inline? That would be worth 3-4 MPG. A cam would help some. Cam technology has improved some in the last 30 years. Not to mention the 80's cams were horrible. The big three were more concerned with blowing clean than making an efficient truck engine.
When Chris Farley talked about living in a van down by the river, did anybody else think that wasn't such a bad idea?

You'll also need to adapt the carb for the TV cable. WTF! this is something very new to me. can anyone tell me about it/options i have? thanks | | | Re: 84 G10 250 | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 veteran | veteran Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 | Manifolds on a 250 bolt on like every other engine. See the picture above. I'm going to replace the head. I'm not looking for major performance by any means but I cant even replace the air cleaner on this thing without changing the carb! Want to get rid of all the excess like the smog air injection system too. | | | Re: 84 G10 250 | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 veteran | veteran Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 | New one on me, but I've mostly pulled straight 6s to get them out of the way. You grow tired of not being to hold 60mph up a hill. It is a little embarrassing. I had the same problem with my 1992 G20 shorty with a 4.3L six. Sixes in full sized vans are marginal when they are new and as they age they are not good if you live in mountain country. I looked at all the options, read the forums, etc. I realized that that any money invested into the six would be for little improvement in power or mileage. I ended up buying a 2001 Express 3500 with a 350 and a 4l80E that was rolled for $1300. I switched the engine, tranny, complete wiring harness, steering column, fuel pump, driveshaft yoke, instrument cluster, etc. I had about $300 dollars in extras to replace fuel lines, etc. I now have a way more powerful vehicle, get a little better mileage, and it sounds awesome with just cats out the sides. However, it was a big undertaking. It took 3 months to rip both trucks apart and build custom engine and transmission mounts, figure out wiring with factory service manuals for both vehicles, and modify almost every vehicle system. I know more about my van than I ever wanted to know. Probably your best bet would be to limp around in the stock six till you can afford an eight. But I know how time and financial constraints would make an alternative seem very attractive. 1992 Chevy G20, 110" wheelbase, Mark III conversion, L31/4L80e swap, Express wiring harness.

Finally getting around to working on this and bought a c10 with a crate v8 to do a swap. The 6 is just too much money for no real point. Unfortunately starting to like the C10 so looking for another donor. Probably going LM7 route. | | | Re: 84 G10 250 | Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,266 Likes: 43 old hand | old hand Joined: Feb 2016 Posts: 1,266 Likes: 43 |
