Can anybody recommend where to buy (overnight) a fuel gauge sending unit for a 76 Dodge with a 318?

I'm guessing this may work from Summit, but not 100% sure:
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/atm-3262/applications/?prefilter=1

Also - anybody ever change one of these? seems pretty simple - just disconnect the battery, unplug the current unit, and put the new one in with 6 screws, plug back in, and roll.

My fuel guage doesn't work - and the unit has a small leak dripping gas out which i can't seem to stop. So I figure kill 2 birds with one stone...

Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

I replaced my tank and sending unit last year and I think I got mine from autopartswarehouse.com
Replacing the sending unit will probably fix the leak but the gauge not working could be a number of things....it could be the sending unit, a bad ground (high probability), a wiring issue, or a gauge or the circuit board on the back of the cluster (I think my problem happened to be all of the above)!!!!

Thanks Lee - Yes i realize it could be more than just the sending unit - although I've tried to troubleshoot other electrical. Could be the float is frozen, because for one brief second awhile back when it was majorly on Empty & I filled it up, it shot to full. I'll check that ground again.

Got the leak to stop - one of the screws was loose back there - i torqued the hell out of it and we seem to be OK - no more liquid gold on the ground, and no more worrying about a smoker tossing a butt and blowing us up!

Thanks for the help.

could you post a photo of the rear of your sending unit and/or how it's wired? My '74 B100 has 1 wire coming out of the unit but no ground. how that's possible I don't know. There are two random wires hanging near the right rear lights and when they touch the sending unit wire the fuel gauge shoots to full. i'm at a loss...

pics aren't the best, but maybe it will help

76 plastic 36 gallon tanks see to be one year only, in 77 they changed them for safety
in 76 the sending unit faces the rear bumper in the middle of the tank

in 77 the sending unit is faces the front of the van and is located on the passenger side corner

the 2 on the right are out of a 76 plastic 36 gallon tank, the one on the left is out of a 77 plastic 36 gallon tank

yours is the metal tank, where as mine is plastic, hence the screw holes in my sending unit

maybe the reason yours has no ground is because the metal tank itself is grounded

I had a 77 and I took mine apart and got in there and cleaned it up and put it back together. If that does not work. The place I got my replacement tank has new ones I just have to remember where and what the name was They did work perfect. I think it was Spectra Fuel tanks. Hope that helps. They did OK by me, good stuff.

One more thing, Call your dealer and see if they have one. I did and they had three. not a bad price at sixty bucks. but new old stock is better. They can do a nation wide search. Worth at try.

The fuel sending unit's wire is light blue and is located on the right rear (passenger) side tail light. That's why the gauge went up when you connected those wires.

Earlier tanks was grounded by a grounding clip, from the elbow of the sending unit to the steel portion of the fuel line. I think they went to a ground wire in '75 or '76. This applies to the steel tanks.

The only sending unit (and tank) still available is for the '77 vans. Earlier years were different and obsolete. Only source now is NOS.

hey bootsy100, my 75 looks just like yours. where you have that new lookin clamp is about where mine has an alligator clip clamped onto the fuel line then its connected to another wire that goes inside my van by the passenger side tail light. i have my interior put together now so i can't see exactly where it goes to but i remember when i first got the van i had to mess around with that wire because sometimes the gauge would fail.

it must be grounded to another wire.
The sending wire is as mentioned above:light blue near passenger tail light. I that wire to the sending unit wire then tried grounding off the metal fuel line (with alligator clip) to the chassis as well as other points but with no luck. gonna have to pull the unit and put meter on it I guess. wish it was as easy as just grounding it. bummer...
thx all for the comments though.

Just realized I never replied to this post that I originated. My float had a crack in it and was taking on fuel - thus, it was always sunk to the bottom and showing on "E". A new float from summit for like $6, and a new cork gasket ( i cut myself from a sheet of cork ) and a ton of gasket sealer (screws into plastic tank) and we're back to as good as new.

Thanks for all the tips & hope the others here find resolution to their questions as well!

I know this I an old thread but it helped me a lot while looking for a fuel sender for a '77 Dodge 36 gal tank. Mine works but it is original and I am not sure for how long. I have found several places online that will rebuild it, and I think I will do that when my original one fails. That being said I did find a NOS sender.
http://www.collectorsautosupply.com.
part number is 4075096
Trouble is, he wants $270 for it.
If you need it, there it is.

Try spectra they make aftermarket tanks and sending units i think !
http://www.spectrapremium.com/products/fuel_tank.html
Also I found this
http://www.jcwhitney.com/1977-1980-...uel-pump/p2005708d51427y1977-1980j1.jcwx
So spectra does have them just call them at spectra and see what they say. The second place i posted is JC Whitney and that was just for a 23 gallon stock tank. But call spectra and ask, chances are good if they make one they have them both. If not you also have the option to upgrade to a new tank and modern sending unit. i have been under all of them and they are very similar hookups. You might have to cut or make a line or two shorter or longer but not a major task the roll over valve on top will always be in the same place.

When you make a reply click "full screen "
At the bottom of the box you type in it will say "post options " click the box that says add this thread to my watched topics.
That should send you an email when ever someone makes a post in this thread

This is an old thread but I wanted to document this for anyone else that can't find one of these sending units. www.collectorsautosupply.com has the sending units in stock for the 36 gallon tanks. They do NOT have them listed on the website. You have to call them directly. Just give them the original part number which is 3895206. Hmmm this is for a 1975 OP was looking for a 1976. Maybe this will still work.

They have been able to track down subsequent interchange part numbers. I picked one up from them for $125. That's significantly less than a lot of places were quoting me to rebuild them.

I should have it in a couple of days and I'll let you know if it works out. They have a return policy so if it doesn't work...no harm no foul. Just my time pulling the tank.

Hi JasonKC, was that sending unit you purchased for a 36 gallon tank? I'm searching now and will probably
give Collectors Auto Supply a ring tomorrow to see If they can help. Thanks for posting the part#! That detail is key indeed.

Cheers!
