Anyone point in the direction to just buy these parts? If not, anyone have easy tips on what NOT to do so we can speed this up and get this girl through paint and into the interior shop? Many thanks in advance! Photo is for reference... My flares and wheels are 2" wider than this...

| | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 199 member | member Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 199 | no help here since my van came set up exactly how I wanted it. I have no plans on flares or ground effects that I would probably ruin anyways. When I park next to my block wall I get it so close that my wheels sometimes rub on it and flares would definitly get destroyed. A spoilerkit would probably get jacked up out in the desert or dirt park spots that I frequent, i need at least a little bit of ground clearance.
My slide thingy was already extended to cover my wider than normal rear wheels and tires (15x12's & 295's) without rubbing. My brother has a 73 shorty and he has cragers and 275's on the back and his rubs. I dont have that problem.
But he told me, that a long wheelbase van slider is like 2" wider than stock shorty's. so maybe that would work for you. If not, it sounds like you might need to chop chop weld weld and grind grind.
That green vans dope.

I'd cut the slider hinge extension in half. then, I would make a step cut on both ends that are being used. Next, I would cut a piece of similar sized steel rod to the needed extra length (plus the amount of step cut from the factory pieces) and do the same step cut (for extra support) and weld the crap out of it to be sure it is solid. Step cuts (cuts not to scale): RipperServing NYC/LI 347-303-7403 | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 70 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 70 | We are of a like mind on that... was planning on mounting the wheels and getting photos for you guys and measurements for me but a freak SNOW storm has hit Iowa last night (in MAY? Snow in MAY? Al Gore... you are a deusche.)I don't want to slosh through five miles of snow in the van to get it back to my shop from the body guy and i don't want to do the fit work for the door sliders in his shop... so we will wait.
I will have photos of the monster rears on here in a day or so and we will do full photo series on how we widened the sliders to make this easier for future customizers.

That cheers me up.

Any of you guys have any idea how to switch them? Or a simple process? Also- can you get new bearings for the slider? make it a little easier and smoother? And literally- this was rusted and old. I got it back from the powdercoater in gloss black for... $5.00 Literally. So, that was well worth it | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 70 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Apr 2013 Posts: 70 | I got the slider extended out and it works, but this old slider mechanism is pretty old and tired and a little saggy... any tips on tightening up the mechanisms before we go in and get mid evil on this thing?

| | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 veteran | veteran Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 | My only suggestion is to clean everything and grease it well. Saggy is the main problem. If things are loose or weak, you've got problems. The roller mechanism is hard to find. Make sure the rollers actually roll and it's not dragging across the track. The arm needs to be as tight as possible while allowing it to pivot.
Clean all areas that ride on other areas, such as the pin that goes through the roller and the door. Rust is not your friend, neither is paint... Be sure any bushings or bearings are clean, well lubricated andproperly functioning. Make sure the roller on the inner side of the door is good too. these break or wear and cause as many problems as the outside roller. I cant get my door to open or shut right now that I replaced it. The door kicks out a little bit, but not like normal, i have to hold and guide it. Same thing with shutting, it doesnt kick back in because its longer.
Do you guys have any pics or ideas on how to get the door extenders operational after install.
It works, its just not using the mechanism like it used to to shut flush, keep extended, and not move when it shouldn't | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 245 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: May 2010 Posts: 245 | Can you guys help?

This may help with alignment, which sounds the problem that you are experiencing. Basically the door is bound a little keeping it from opening and closing freely. There are 3 bolts if I remember correctly. Just loosen them and use a floor jack under the back of the door to raise it slightly. As Ripper said make sure you have everything well lubricated. The latch as you probably know has two functions when closing the door. If it latches but does not draw in, push down on the handle and this should fully engage the latch. It takes patients as you probably will not be successful the first time. Good luck! | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 774 old hand | old hand Joined: May 2001 Posts: 774 | Did you change the location of the stop on the upper track, when you added your extension?
As the door closes the bar hits that stop and further pulling on the door allows it to move inward and latch the rear of the door. If you do not have that stop adjusted correctly that will not allow the door to close properly.
I can't remember what makes the door open better, I think when we had our extender on (prior to Gull wing days), we always had to either pull on the extender to get the back of the door to kick out correctly if we were outside or push on the back of the door if we were inside.
Dave | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 veteran | veteran Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 | Yeah, sliders are often a problem, which is why I never buy a van that has one anymore. The slightest your door is out-of-adjustment, it will cause the door to malfunction.
And yes, the door stop must be repositioned. That will help with closing, but not much with opening.
It sounds like the arm is stiff. Did you clean off the paint on the end pins? RipperServing NYC/LI 347-303-7403 | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: May 2010 Posts: 245 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: May 2010 Posts: 245 | Yah I had to grind the powder coat off the tips which I had marked to not coat, and it works fine.
The real problem I think came to light recently, Tang from RCV said I put the spring on backwards so it looks like that locking piece that kicks out and notches the door to stay open is not under tension- hence the flopping in and out as it slides.
Other than that it seats and fits like it did before.
On the stop- should I just move it a few inches back where it works and just drill a new hole for it to live? | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 1,389 old hand | old hand Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 1,389 | Yes, extension arms came with a longer stop, I think you need to find one or make one, I can measure mine if you need the length.

If not ill just shut the door and mark where the back edge of the arm rests for slide stop placement.
And does anybody have pics of what the spring mechanism and all the sleeves etc look like? | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 1,389 old hand | old hand Joined: Jul 2011 Posts: 1,389 | The extension arm stop is 6" without the bumpers, below is the installation instructions for aftermarket arm.

I needed to move the sliding track stop plate back to the new extended closed position. In this pic you can see the holes from the original plate, and just to the left- the new holes I drilled. Originally this stop latch was here: The plate itself I took a cutoff saw to and ground a notch to fit it over the lip of the sliding rail as its original location had no rail to interfere as it was in front of it. In this photo below you can see how the bump stop plate now fits anywhere along the rail to correctly close and latch the door: | | | Re: Extra WIDE door slide extension fabwork | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 559 | Joined: Jun 2010 Posts: 18,286 Likes: 559 |
