Thanks uncle fester, this is completely new for me as never done a "How To / real time project before" so not really sure what level of detail to go into, but coming from angle that if your going to attempt it this is what you'll face. Some people may have removed a prop but not a starter and vice versus so hopefully some useful info for all as you say. Glad your enjoying progress.

Mark

**Part 5 of Thread**
This is getting addictive, was laying under the van at 7.45am on a Sunday morning in the pouring rain (yes i am working on it outside) and thought you must be mad!! But here we go...

First thing in this part is a safety note, I am making sure that I am able to post the next part of the thread as I go so maybe a bit over cautious but you need to prop up the rear of the engine before undoing anything, see pic below, don't use a jack as these can sag, use axle stands.

Where the transmission mounts to the rear of the engine there are a number of bolts and brackets holding on a cover that need removing, these are shown below. Start with the smaller headed bolts first, the two center ones and then there is one other passenger side right up by the oil filter. When these are removed you then have 4 larger headed bolts to remove the two brackets.

Driver side bracket shown below, you can also see the hole where i removed the starter motor from in my earlier post.:-

To remove the shield you need to prize it off over the stud that protrudes by the starter motor hole, once off this is what the shield looks like, see below:-

That's it for me this weekend, hopefully do some more during the week. Keep watching! Mark

mlarky - All engine power and torque curves cross at 5252 rpm. It is the equation to figure out torque from horsepower that dictates this (HP = [TQ x RPM] / 5252). smile FYI!

keep up the good work man!!! looking nice on that conversion. smile Automatic + OD for the win!

Nate, Red Rooster and Alizazam
Thanks for the feedback much appreciated, know what you mean about the grease Nate, but don't worry i'm wearing gloves!
Seriously though I'm using "WD40" to degrease as I go along.

The A518 transmission came out a 1990 Ramcharger and I have the original Overdrive switch as well Chrysler Part Number 56003266 which I am hoping to use as the letters "O/D" will illuminate when i'm in overdrive so will be good at night , it has the following wires out the back:
Orange
Blue/white
Orange / white
Black
Currently looking for a wiring diagram if anyone can help?
Thanks
Mark

Alikazam, I realize the power and torque cross at 5250, known that fact for a long time...I should rephrase what I meant to say...the torque seems to peak out at about 3200, then starts to drop off. At least according to the charts I found online for the 3.9 V6. Someone in here thought the V6 wouldn't be enough power for the van and an AOD. I thought otherwise. Have heard some V6 vans got an AOD. Sticking to my plan for the AOD swap. 3pin's step by step with pics is an inspiration. Wish I could be there to help him and learn. Not able to find anyone in my area into vans and wanting to help each other on projects like the old days. Doing the majority of mine solo.

Hi Mlarky
Pleased the post is inspiring you to do your owm, the 'step by step' guide is aimed to try and capture everything you come up against, it may make a long thread but if it removes some of the greyness from performing this swap (I know as theres still some grey areas to go)and inspires you to do one I'll be very happy! If you do start yours after the post please by all means drop me a PM at any point and I'll help you out with any additional pics or advice you need.

Noticed last night a big obstacle to overcome! Have the van up on two sets of ramps welded together, means that the ramps are blocking where I was going to slide the transmission out on the passenger side. Think I'll have to jack up van put an axle stand that side, remove transmission then put back on ramp - sounds easy not sure it is!!! still pondering that one..
Will post some pics when I get in.
Mark
