LOL! I think I'm giving this Astro more of a workout in the last week than it had in months from the previous owners. grin
I noticed something the last two days - sometimes when you go to start it, you turn the key and it just makes a "chunk" sound, but won't turn over the starter. If you then back the key off and try again, it almost always turns over the starter normally on the second try. Only once did I get the "chunk" sound a second time, and I had to back the key off and try a third time, which it fired right up.

Seems to be roughly every 3 or 4 times you start the van it will do this; does not seem to make a difference if it's hot or cold. At first I thought it might be the transmission-in-park sensor, so I was moving the shifter a little bit, but now I have tried it without touching the shifter at all, and get the same exact result, so I don't think it's that.

Does this sound like a solenoid or a starter on the way out?
Thanks!

Dead spot in the starter. That clunk is the solenoid engaging. Just get the starter rebuilt and you will be good to go.

When Chris Farley talked about living in a van down by the river, did anybody else think that wasn't such a bad idea?

Thanks, that confirmed what I was wondering...if there was a spot in the starter that was worn, because it seemed too cyclical to be coincidence - every 3 or 4 starts it hits, and then works perfect...then hits again. ;)

By the way - is the starter fairly easy to swap out on these? I'll have to crawl under there and look...I've done lots of Jeeps and even a diesel F250 starter before, but as I've mentioned previously, this is my first van. smile

Not bad to change at all. Will take a whole 15 minutes or so.

I would crawl under and inspect the wiring. Remove the connectors and wire brush them shiny. Also the main engine ground. Battery terminals too.

If no difference, then at least the connectors will come off extra easily with a new starter.
