I will be replacing my blown head gasket in my 1972 Dodge, 316 manual trany van and need some advice.

Any pitfalls that I should look out for? Any shortcuts that save time? How about recommendations as to the best replacement gasket to buy? Or tricks of the trade that I'm not aware of?

This will be my first time replacing a head gasket so I'm looking for as much info as I can get.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
I'm finishing put the second 318 in this mo.
but not head work. I always use a good penetrating oil like B'LASTER PB or BREAK FREE two days before starting put some on the exhaust manifold bolts and the exhaust pipe bolts or Y pipe, morning and night.
If you have A/C do not loosen the hoses. Leave them connected to the pump.
I use zip lock bags to put bolts in from each part like steering pump carb. ect.
good luck
LABEL ALL THE VACUUM LINES TAKE PIX. if you can of engine wires , vacuum lines , water hoses you don't always find them in a book.
Have engine shop check the head for flat ,it may have wrapped or burt where the leak was.
let use Know how you are comeing along.
Others will ring in with help.

I'm in CT with no garage to work in, so I'm putting off this work until warmer days. Thanks for your reply. I trying to get all the information that I can before I start.

I do have another question though. Since I plan on replacing the Head Gasket, is there anything else that I should clean, check or replace while I'm in there?

Hi Chris
That could take a long answer.
You probably have to replace the exhaust gaskets, intake gaskets , water pump bypass hose , distributor O-ring etc
I forgot how old is this engine?
Why are you replacing the head gaskets?
If a head gasket is blown then a machine shop should inspect the head for flatness.
Of course now is the time to go to solid lifters and shave the heads for more power.
Maybe a RV cam too.
The best thing is to read a manual for the year of the motor.
GOOD LUCK CLOUDY
