I'm tring to replace the proportion valve for the brakes. My local Dodge dealer is saying I could get a new one for 250!?! Is there someplace online possibly that's a good mailorder source for this stuff at more sane prices? | | | Re: finding parts fo Dodge Tradesman #58292 January 12th 2001 11:04 am | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 1,088 old hand | old hand Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 1,088 | Why do you want to replace the proportioning valve? I need to replace it because it's leaking brake fluid! | | | Re: finding parts fo Dodge Tradesman #58294 January 13th 2001 1:36 am | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 252 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 252 | Probably not the valve itself - pull off the lines and see about relpacing the ends (there was enough room coiled in at the factory to change them, Your Mileage May Vary). Possibly they have become corroded over time or have backed off slightly... Anyhoo, that's the cheap way, and if that doesn't do it for you, get one from an aftermarket supplier - not only cheaper, but also adjustable. | | | Re: finding parts fo Dodge Tradesman #58295 January 12th 2001 4:03 pm | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 91 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 91 | That's probably true but everything is so corroded down there that I can't unscrew the fastners. I've tried a couple things like WD-40, etc. but I can't get 'em to come loose and the more I try, the more I strip 'em. I figured I'd have to cut all the hoses, put new ends and get a new valve. I don't know what after market suppliers are out there for Dodge. I went directly through my local Dodge dealer and the best they could come up with was $250 for a replacement valve. That seems a little ridiculous for a part like this... but I'm still pretty new to this stuff so maybe it's totally reasonable? quote: Originally posted by Cohort: Probably not the valve itself - pull off the lines and see about relpacing the ends (there was enough room coiled in at the factory to change them, Your Mileage May Vary). Use brake flued to soak the threads for two days to losen the rust. Here's an example of an aftermarket proportioning valve: Wilwood rotary valve. I need to grab my "brake systems" book from home, then I can really give you a good answer.. | | | Re: finding parts fo Dodge Tradesman #58298 January 12th 2001 6:46 pm | Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 91 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Jan 2001 Posts: 91 | There is something that resembles a switch on the front end of the unit. It's like a round, bulbous rubber thing with a metal pin sticking out of it. Can't tell if the metal pin is SUPPOSED to be poking out or it's just busted through. The whole unit looks like it's been sitting on the ocean floor for a hundred years or so. quote: Originally posted by CLOUDY: Hi Poopville, Do you have a switch on the valve? the switch may be leaking. On the top in the center should be the Brake warning light connector. Do you see where the leak is coming from? You may be able to replace the bad part. CLOUDY | | |
