wow, not too much action in the import forums. Anyway, my friend has a 73 westfalia van, and it isnt shifting gears properly. (4 speed manual). The transmission was replaced about 1000 miles ago, but its done alot of sitting in the meantime. Anybody had troubles with shifter linkages on these? what part of the linkage should i be looking at? There's a bit of play in all the visible joints, but nothing that i think would cause it to shift this badly.

That shift linkage goes from the shifter all the way back to the transmission, long travel. The joints in the linkage must be worn

Perhaps the clutch cable needs replaced or adjusted.

NO it adjusts right where the shifter goes thru the floor.....Its a simple adjustment you loosen the shifter from the floor and movr it around....try it first one way remembering where you moved it from....it that movement doesn't work move it a different way.....they vw had a real problem of popping out of 3rd gear mechanics went on and on about how hard it was to fix....really showed them up when you could adjust the tranny in five minutes without getting under the van

There is a square shaped rubber/urathane bushing right behind the shifter, replace it first, it WILL make a big difference.
