I had an 86 Taurus with an AXOD tranny that needed to be rebuilt after 72k miles (problem with the design, according to several tranny shops). Does Ford have any problems like that with the van transmissions in the 92 - 96 models? | | | Re: Ford Transmissions #57319 February 22nd 2001 10:28 pm | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 937 Retired | Retired Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 937 | quote: Originally posted by Fast Eddie: In looking to buy a van recently, I have seen several 92, 93, and 94 e-150s with "rebuilt transmissions" advertised. Depends! I am in the process of converting my 75 Ford Van (started life as an E-100 and is now a dually E-whatever)into a diesel powered vehicle since the 460 ate too much gas to make it practical. I was all set to put in a '95 power stroke but was told the tranny for that year was weak. Having spent $1200 to beef up the C6 I used with my 460 I didn't really want to go to that expense again. I just had the chance to grab a 99 wreck with same 7.3 power stoke diesel, but with a new improved tranny that is suppose to be 10 time better than what they had in the early - mid 90's so I bought it. Now, I'm not sure what tranny they used on other engines, but I'm guessing they have been the C-6 3 speed and the same 4 speed overdrive regardless of engine. If all you are doing is driving (no heavy towing) then you'll probably be fine. If you tow then have it built up to handle the load. When I did my C-6 I took the van and camper to the transmission place and had them see what I planned to do with it. They built the tranny to handle the job and it did no sweat. In fact the C-6 is for sale if interested!!!! I wanted $750, but will take $500. Only has two years on it since I did the rebuild and about 10,000 miles max. I'm in Rhode Island..... come and get it! Ain't just a Ford thing either. Chevy transmissions will burn up to if towing heavy loads and not built up correctly. Especially overdrives. Know your limitations and stay within them. ------------------ BoneHead Built on Vanning Memories Powered by Vanning Dreams | | | Re: Ford Transmissions #57320 February 24th 2001 1:04 am | Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 25 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Feb 2001 Posts: 25 | Thanks, Bonehead! I don't plan on doing any serious towing - I'll put a Class III hitch on the van, unless it has one already. That's mostly so I can add a Hitch Haul (carries 500 pounds, or so they say) for more hauling of items to the beach or for camping. I had thought about adding a ladder and roof rack to the van, but the ones I'm looking at don't have them now, and I think it looks "cleaner" without those on the back. I don't have tools and know-how to rebuild a tranny myself, so I'd go with Cottmans or a good local place here in Virginia. If I lived a little closer (like Connecticut), I might take you up on the C-6! | | |
