Hello all,

This is my first technical question in your community here... you already helped my a lot before, so I decided to join this cool place here smile

First what I am working on:
My '88 Chevy G20 Van (350cui, TH700R4) will get a full rebuild. In the moment there is a naked body waiting in the barn to get some paint... but that's the easy part...

Here comes the more difficult stuff:
I will upgrade the suspension with poly bushings, Koni shocks and am additional rear sway bar. I also want to get bigger brakes... because the stock ones are quite rubbish if you go over 100mph on the German highway ;)
The plan is to use Classic Performances Big Brake Kit with 2" drop spindles for 1973-87 Chevy trucks. Due to my information the suspension is the same as on the Vans... but that is not confirmed...

Do any of you guys have some experience with the drop spindles/ big brake kit/ rear disc conversion?
I could not find proper information for this at the Classic Performance hotline or in any internet community, so any help is appreciated... I don't want to waste a lot of money to get the parts shipped to Germany and get mad if it doesn't work...

Thanks,
Stefan

EDIT: Here the link to that brake kit http://www.classicperform.com/Store/Brakes/6872FRBK-BB-R.htm

welcome aboard Stefan! I'm sure others will chime in, but yes, there are a few vanners that have used the pic up truck spindles on their vans with no issues. I would also think (I'm not a Chevy guy) that a disc brake kit designed to match the rear that you have will work fine regardless if it is for a van, truck or car.

Good luck with your project and post some pictures please as you go.

Cool, thanks for the feedback.

I really wonder that it is so difficult to get any kind of performance parts for the Chevy Van. Is there not many people in US who like to put some serious power in their van?

Welcome to the forums!

I've seen people use the pickup brakes and spindles etc. just make sure you get the set that's for the proper rear axle as you've most likely got the 8.5 inch 10 bolts, much like mine (88 g20 350 700r4).

We Americans love going fast but we don't like to turn! As for performance upgrades to a van it's a bit harder, nobody makes anything for vans much anymore as it is starting to die off with the newer generation. So if we need something we look in the pickup section for that particular motor and go from there. We have to dig a little bit deeper than most for performance upgrades but it's all worth it in the end.

Gone vannin' I'll call you later.

Most vanners are happy with the performance of the factory brake set ups.So there just is not a big enough market for the aftermarket guys to do van specific parts......

Thanks you guys for the answers... I think I will get that kit and try if it works.

I will keep you updated but it might take a few weeks until that stuff is here and mounted to the Van.

Cheers!

I have noticed my factory front discs tend to heat up quickly coming down the mountains. They have plenty of life but next set will be performance pads on slotted rotors.

I wonder are the G30 brakes different from the G20 and are they interchangeable. That might be something worth looking into.

Or there might be motorhome specific brakes available, there was some pretty big and heavy RVs built on the G30/P30 chassis.

I have a P30 (RV chassis) manual on PDF, if you want a copy PM me your email address and I'll send it to you.
