My wife came across this ad the other night. The 72 Chevy we were looking at has sold.My wife is a big van of the VW vans.We have never owned one.I heard the are really easy to work on.What do you guys think about the trans issue? Could it be some thing else minor? I'm thinking it would make a great daily to save some mpgs. And I could be prez of the TMW club lol I know there are some VW & TMW haters but over all what do you guys think? $1500 maybe?

I asked the seller a few questions,
his reply:
Attached are some of the pictures that show the rust. There is some, but not a whole lot. I am looking for the pictures I had of the interior. I will send them soon. Basically it is down to bare metal except for the front seats and the dash. I do not have any of the interior items, they were not worth saving when I purchased the van myself.

I am not sure what is wrong with the transmission. It may not even be that. The problem is that first and second gear are fine but when you try to hit third or more the van basically loses power.

As for the electrical system. After I got the van I discovered that some of the wires had been cut. The headlights and taillights work but the turn signals and fuel gage does not.

The van has some great potetial, unfortunately my skills, time and money are limited and thats why I want to let it go.

Other than those few things it seems like it could be made road worthy pretty quickly.

If you are still interested let me know and I will make sure to get the interior photos out.

Thanks
Larry

Personally I was (and still am to an extent) a VW nut.

These vans are getting quite collectible so for $1500 you can't go wrong. You can get anything for them out of a magazine or online.

www.geneberg.com

www.westcoastmetric.com

etc, etc.

77? Could be the 2.0L or the 1.8L engine but it is EFI I do believe.

As far as power loss, I would say it's an engine or fuel issue, not a trans issue.

Okay...I see it's been switched over to carburetors.

There's two of them (probably twin Solex carbs), so they need to be in sync with each other and tuned properly.

yeah I agree. And the VW vans were never known for having much power anyway.

i have always love vw's and have owned two busses in my day. the first was a 68. the first year for the bay window. drove it all over, and had a blast.the second was a 64. more collectable and better looking in my opinion. but not as comfy as my bay. everything on them is easy to work on. not a big fan of any bus past 72, but that's just my personal preference and love for the upright boxer motor as oposed to the pancake.
but, they run great if taken care of properly. and are very simple machines. i recomend buying '' the idiots guide'' it's the first book any vw owner should buy. a wealth of knowledge and kinda fun to read.
the body looks far better than average for a bus, and that's a large portion of the game as far as vw's go. the price seems fair. ive paid more for less.
good luck in whatever you decide.
