I think I caught a glimpse of a timing tab behind power steering pump. Are you guys using that to time your engines or making your own marks someplace else? Sure is hard to see, what's the technique there? Thanks.

You can just see it here on my 83 slant and the one on my 79 360(behind the pwr str pmp) is a butch to get at.Chrysler used a special timing light set up that had a probe set down into a round 'gun-site' tube(I think you can see it in the pic).There is a regular tab and marks in same area.I just play with my slants now so it's been awhile but a home made mark might just be the ticket.

Hmmm, i use a skim coat of RTV and install timing tape on my harmonic balancer and use the 0 mark on the timing chain cover and the tape to read my timing degrees on my engine. smile Of course my only accessory on my 360 is an Alternator and Water pump! haha. Good luck!

Hmm. I'll think of something. Maybe take out the the battery and lay my head on the tray (if it had a tray), or remove the hood and stand on a ladder + look straight down. Maybe use a mirror held inside the engine compartment from the front. Hah!

Might be it's just a two man job and I set my own TDC mark underneath someplace.

On my 83 Dodge equipped with a 318, there is a timing tab down low below the power steering pump:

Yeah, I have some oil leaks, and yeah, it's blurry. Sorry. You might check there for your marks. I believe that the timing chain cover also has the regular timing tab, but it is so buried that there is no way I could see it with the motor running and with a timing light.

Also, on older 70s Dodge vans there was a window on the top of the transmission bellhousing that had the timing degrees stamped along the edge and the timing mark was actually on the torque converter. The operator would shine the timing gun at the window and be able to see what the timing was. That way you could time the motor from the driver's seat.

Your timing arks will likely be in one of those two places.

Altosax, what year van do you have?

Here's what's on my 81 Dodge's 318:

The Before/After scale is on top of the timing chain cover, and you can also use the pointers built into the long bracket with the tubular mount for an inductive timing pickup. (the pointers look like bright spots on the edge of the silver bracket in my photo)

I always crawl underneath and look at the scale from the perspective of Reed's photo. It really is a two person job if you don't want to beat yourself up. I never like having my head anywhere near fan blades, but that's about the only way to see the scale without using the inductive pickup, which was for Sunn engine analyzers.

When I get ambitious I'll try that route; I have 2 of the Sunn Sleuth One analyzers and one of the inductive pickups. Supposedly the factory used the inductive pickup method to time the engines, since there is no chance of slop in the timing chain, gears, & distributor causing errors with detecting top dead center, since the pickup takes it's signal right off of the harmonic balancer by magnetically detecting the slot milled in it.

What year? Good question!

The CA reg calls it a '74 but the vin goes B11AE3XO...Which I think is '73. The engine casting # on the driver side below the head is: 4104230-3?8-11, the heads are cast: 4027163 , I think both of those are post '77 casting numbers. There are fine numbers on the front, drvr side below the head but not legible to me. The oil pan seems to be diff paint fade from the block, so perhaps this was a replacement passenger car engine and the pan was put on from the orig motor.

Whatever it is the timing scale is not visible without removing the steering pump and come to think of it I have no knowledge the balancer is orig to the motor or the mark on it is correctly positioned anyway.

My guess is I am do for another one of those "A-ha" moments when somebody points out the obvious to me - again. I like those and need plenty.
