I initially thought this would be an easy fix - the gas gauge on my '78 chevy van tends to sometimes have a mind of its own, flying back and forth before settling on the correct position and then doing the same again. So I figured it was the fuel sending unit. My pocket shortly emptied later (along with some new fuel lines which turned out to be shot) and the gauge is still doing exactly the same thing. Any ideas?

Find and clean the ground wire going to the sender unit.
Remove the paint where the wire attaches and replace the screw.
