Can anyone tell me why not head gaskets seems to hold very long time in my -95 Lumina with a 3,1 liter(189cid) engine? I blowed the gasket on the right head now for the second time in 2 year. First time it was on the 1 cylinder and now at the 6, same head but i could´nt find some damage on the head last time. I have drive the car about 31000 miles since last time, and i think that it should hold longer.

There are upgraded head gaskets, same as the Astro van. There are 3 versions, factory shite, the next generation shite, and finally the good ones...Some auto parts stores will give you the second gen ones to get rid of them....

Make sure you get the Felpro Permatourque steel ones

Thanks for the answer, i have to tell the local part dealer about it. I think that i will put a 350 V8 in the Lumina if it will not work that i like smile the other problems with Lumina is that the engine are at the wrong direction in the engine room, and someone has stoled 2 cylinders mad smile

Possibly a worded head. Have it check this time.
Good luck, Cloudy here.

When did head gaskets at the shop I worked at, we always had the heads sent out to a machine shop to be checked out and then milled for a true mating surface. I would clean the block with a mild scotchbrite pad to make it shine.

Some vehicles require the use of new head bolts due to torque stretch. Try some new head bolts this time too.

We checked the head last time, and this time we milled it in a machine so i think that the head should be ok. I got a new felpro gasket today, but i did´nt but some bolts. I have always tighten old head bolts a little bit tighter that it reads in the book, hope that´s enough. Tomorrow it will be back on the road, and i hope that water will stay in engine and radiator smile At Saturday when i noticed that some thing was wrong, the engine worked more like a water pump frown

Third time the head bolts were used ? And you over torqued them ?? Hope that works out.....

Maybe i should bought new bolts blush , but i don´t think there are some problem. Lumina´s head bolts are 12mm, and i think that i can use them some times. I don´t say anything if there is some 10mm bolts like in some Japanese shit, then i´ts probably god to shift them every time. Anyway i have it fixed now, and it seems to work okay. Next time i promise to buy new bolts, and i hope that i can drive it for at least 30000 miles this time to. smile smile
