Here is how bad it is...

Rail is rusted right thru too.

To be honest, if this was a stock Van, it would be hardly worth fixing, but the plan is forming...
I need more headroom and I think what I have in my head will work.
I can remove nearly all the rusted stuff, and as the cap sits down near onto the drip rain I can fabricate a new section and make the roof water tight AND stronger...
Looks like my new Mig Welder is gonna get a workout!

Wow BigB, that's pretty insane. I'd never have guessed all that was going on from the sound condition of the rest of your van. It's almost naughty to say, but looks like you've got your work cut out for you... at least part of the way around!

;0)

I hope you take lots of pictures as you work on it. It should be a great education for others considering a replacement or high top.

I haven't used any of it yet, but it might be worth researching the merits of some of the weld-through primer paint, to get that area coated as well as possible with something heat-resistant before you weld it up.

By the way, if you need to separate any of the rubber adhesive/damper that was applied between the braces and the panels, a guitar string may work better than a scraper or knife. You work it back and forth like a cable saw.

Clear skies!

It's what you learn after you know it all, that counts...

Are you living to work, or working to live?

Learning from my own mistakes is good, learning from yours would be much better! [Linked Image]

Thanks Lostsheep....
Well, it was a Baaaaargain, and nobody pulled the wool over my eyes.;)

Thanks for the support Ram, and Hope the wife gets well soon.
Thats no fun having eye probs, and I know, as I had a central reninal Vein Occlusion a few years back and lost a good chunk of sight on one side. I had to have a lot of Laser spots to seal the leaking blood vessels... and it aint fun! I assume they put the "Gas Bubble" into the eye to press the retina back into place, which is why she is face down?

It may take me a while to get fully into this, as I have to mass everything I need, and prep.
If this rust thinks it is getting away with stopping me... I have the weapons, and I am not afraid to use them!!

watched a guy cut the back foot off a 77 Dodge at the wrecking yard today. he started cutting out the front roof section but left before he was done. might of ran out of battery power in saw. i kinda want that roof section as i might fill in my sunroof (not really sure if i want to keep sunroof or not) [Linked Image] [Linked Image]
