Cheers, It's looking good so far.
Pulled the sump and no water or metal in the oil.
Pulled the rocker covers too and all looks good there too.

Shaggy are you gonna replace the rear main seal before it goes in? Maybe upgrade the timing gear/chain set?
Just a thought, if it's been sitting a while.

Cool van, awesome work! I just read all 35 pages. Hard to finish because kept wanting to go work on my van, lol. Laughed out my chair at the "like an viking warrior woman organisming during a thunder storm". I want my van to sound like that! Remember this?

Thanks Tim,

As it may have spent a lot of time at idle there could be more carbon build up than it's mileage would typically indicate.

Dipthane (Irish product you might not know of in north america) is apparently pretty good at helping to clean up the carbon build up and improves fuel economy a bit too so will throw some of that in the tank once I get it back on the road. I have an LPG (propane) system in it that I want to upgrade too so will have to look up any effects that might have on the carbon.

Have to figure out what the best of what I have now in terms of how to build the motor up.

I have essentially two full motors with ancillaries and a spare set of heads and a spare carb and few other small bits.
The heads on the Target master are 462 which have a rep as weak casting smog heads, the other 2 sets I have are another set of 462's and a set of 882's which are meant to be the best of the smog heads but probably not worth switching out as the ones on it now aren't leaking.
It's not gonna be a race motor, I just want reliability and a decent amount of torque for a 3350kg van. Stock it was only something like 168 HP as it was a cali emission's package. I ditched all of the smog pump etc a long time back.

The motor I just bought has a Holley street dominator intake and holley 4 barrel, and a mallory unilite dizzy (I'll use my HEI dizzy instead of the unilite along with an MSD unit).

I also have a modernish (10 years old) edelbrock peformer intake and edelbrock carb (1405 I think).
Which do you good folks reckon would be better?

Or I could put a Holley carb on the edelbrock intake as I have an adaptor plate.

Plans have changed and developed over the last 2 months.

I now have a grand total of 3 motors...

all 1979 Chevy 5.7 small blocks.

1. The motor that was in it when I cooked it going to the Kilbeggan show. This is bored out 60 thou, needs a new crank, cam and bearings. I have a crank for it now still have to buy a cam and other bits.

2. Standard stock motor. This is pretty much the same motor as was in the van from factory. It was running on 7 cylinders when I got it (cheap). It had a bent push rod and stuck valve. I've replaced these and have this motor back in the van and running, I just need to plumb it in, fit the rad and an electric fuel pump and clean up some wiring.

3. The Target master motor. Stock bore but rusty cylinders, needs to be bored out 20-30 thou over I reckon.
This is a 4 bolt motor so I am going to invest a bit into this one and make it my long term motor which I will build up over the next year. I've got a set of summit alloy 64cc heads and roller rockers to go on it and will be fitting an RV roller rocker cam. Plan is a higher compression motor with good torque at low revs and good airflow intake to run well on LPG ( LPG likes higher compression too).
