My van has a 700r4 with 100k on it (fresh fluid and filter). My van does not have a tow pack on it.

If I hammer it from a dead stop it shifts through all of its gears nice and crisp. However if I drive it with a light foot it lags/jerks in shifts between 1st and 2nd, less so through 2nd to 3rd, and then when it drops to 4th/OD I can feel/hear a light clunk when it goes in.

Upon slowing down it will sometimes shift from 3rd to 1st so hard its like its "engine breaking" or letting the clutch out in a standard with the revs to low, at too high a speed.

What could be causing this? Could it be a TV cable out of adjustment? A vacuum leak somewhere in the system that effects the transmission? Am I just slowly loosing my transmission?

The fluid levels are good, I typically add half a bottle of lucas transmission conditioner every 2 months, and I've never had it slip under power, only during shift points.

I don't want to go resetting the TV cable if I don't have to as I know they are kind of tricky.

As much as you don't want mess with it, you should still try and make sure the TV cable is adjusted properly.

I tend to think thats the problem anyway and its not like its a big procedure, just tricky. I just want a couple opinions before I put any ideas into action. The help is appreciated.

I would make the adjustment. It sounds like a pressure problem. If the cable adjustment doesn't help you may have a leak at the valve body/trans case.
I've never had to add anything between changes.
There are some Chevy and 4X4 forums that have good info on the 700R4, you might search some and find a better answer.
When it comes to auto trans most people (me too) know just enough to be dangerous.

Most people believe they are doing the right thing by changing the fluid on a high milage trans.
What the big tranny shops don't want you to know is that changing the fluid on a hi mileage trans(over 100,000 miles) that has never had fluid change done to it can do more harm then good.
The new fluid loosens the varnish that builds up inside of a hi milage trans and can play hell in the small holes that are in the valve body of most transmissions.....

It's a crap shoot.......

Thanks guys the more research I do the more I think its out of adjustment.

I check my fluids once a week and the dipstick says Im good on fluid. It does drip out the tail shaft (very small) and I don't run an external cooler (yet). The van typically has 1000 pounds of either tools or music equipment in it at all times. This translates to higher transmission oil temps which contributes to some fluid burn off. It doesn't smell burnt but its not that clean red either.

Wookee, the guy who did the filter in my trans told me the same thing. I asked him to flush it and he said he couldn't because it had too many miles. But he leveled it up for me because it was low (dumped a lot of fluid when I changed the motor). I should have been more specific in my original post.

I do what I can to care for my transmission, but I too, know just enough to be dangerous. haha. I think overall its in good shape as it shifts so good under heavy pedal. I know its only a matter of time anyway though, being a 700r4 with 100K on it.

I got almost 170K out of the A518 in my 94 before she puked. That's pretty good for one of those.

If your transmission has had the fluid changed every 30,000 miles, you can change the fluid all you want with no ill effects. If the trans has gone more than 100k miles with the same fluid, You can start adding Marvel Mystry Oil by the half cup every hundred miles. The marvel will disolve deposits where they are and not loosen them up. You will notice the fluid start getting real dark. run thru about a quart of marvel by the half cup incriment and then change your fluid. You should have a nice clean trans.. Otherwise, just don;t change it at all.. just add as necessary. But You continue to loose the fresh fluid friction benefits.

Easy task is just adjust the TV cable first and then see where you stand. If theres no change, you have a sticking valve in the valve body.

Yeah..... I know I know.... It's NOT a van... But if you squint, It could be a REALLY long van?
