Anyone know where I can get this VIN decoded? It's for my 72 Chevy P10 step van. All of the online decoders get confused by my VIN. I guess it's because it's a commercial VIN. I'd like to see if it tells me anything about me rear before I tear the cover off and start counting teeth.

Anyone know what this tells me:

CPS122F140121

Thanks in advance

You probably have to search truck oriented sites rather than regular van and pick up sites.

Most parts should be the same as a similar GVW van or pickup

I would think that somewhere on that van is a build tag. Dodges have them right behind the battery on the firewall, and it looks like a bunch of jumbled numbers. Somewhere on it should be one.

Well just went out after work and pulled the rear cover off and found that I have a 4.11 rear. I still can't find those codes anywhere on the step van. No biggie, just wanted to figure out the rear ratio so I could figure out what I need to buy.

Any one know the spline count for a 72 Chevy 12 bolt truck rear? I see two different counts listed for 12 bolts on ebay. I am guessing one is for cars and one is for trucks but not 100% sure.

Not sure about GM (Wookie may know, but the spline count refers to the number of teeth in the pinion for the yoke. On Mopars there also were 2 differents splines. The lower number (bigger teeth were used on trucks and high performance cars.

sorry can't help with the spline count,I did not know there was more than one for 12 bolt Chevy rears.

I do know that the ford 9 inch has at least 2. Typical ford better idea...

the numbers stamed into the ring gear might help......

That's exactly what I found when I opened the rear up last night...9:37 was on mine. What do the other numbers tell me on that stamp?

I was a little confused. It's not the spline count, but the size of the carrier...Series 2 vs series 3 vs. series 4

I have no idea what the difference is between these series at this point, but looks like I need series 3 for trucks.

The first set of numbers is the serial number. The 11.37 I believe is the diameter of the ring gear (tells you what rear it fits in). GM - obviously is the make it fits. 5:66 should be the gear ratio (these gears are huge) Meaning how many teath on the ring gear as apposed to the pinion.

Something like that anyway, I believe it is actually by dimensions not actual teeth. I know you can count the teeth on both to come close to the gear ratio.

This ratio will also change by the diameter of tire on the vehicle.

Ok I'm very impatient and just decided to call a few vendors to see what they can tell me. If anyone needs info or parts for for their rear differentials I think you need to give Randy's Ring & Pinion a call. They were awesome!!! BUT, they talked me into spending my hard earned money crazy

Looks like I'm going with a 3.42 rear ratio and also an Auburn positraction carrier unit. I also have a 700r4 ready to be picked up at a local used parts place. Next I need to finish up the Caddy 500 motor and have a shorter driveshaft made up and I should be cruising good down the highway nice to Van Events yay

3:42's will be a good gear for you, especially with the 500.

If I ever get the money I'd like to put a 3.92 Sure-Grip (Moparese for Positraction) in my '94 van.

sorry i did not get back with you sooner.
the 5:66 is the date it was made.
11:37 is the gear ratio divide 11 into 37 ='s 3:36

Sorry for not explaning this clearer before.I forgot i was talking to a ford guy.....LOl

As far as the carriers go.The carriers stay with the gear ratio's
so you need to swap out the carrier if want to go from a lets say a 4:10 to a 3:08 of vise a versa.......
as long as its a 12 bolt housing you can swap the carriers.
A ten bolt will not interchange with a 12 bolt though.....

Thanks Wookee!!!

I ended up buying a set of new 3.43 ring & Pinion gears. Since I needed a new carrier I went with a posi unit from Auburn, and then got a used/rebuilt 700r4 tranny from an 85 Caprice. Now just need to finish up the Caddy Engine and measure up for a shorter drive shaft and I'll be pulling wheeelieees with my bread truck ;) The 250 6cyl will do for this season so the 700r4 and caddy engine may have to be a winter project unless I really get motivated between events to get it in and running. I'd rather save it for a winter project so I'm not out of commission my first season of vannin laugh

I realize these posts are old, but I have a question regarding a Manufacturer plate on my Grumman Olson Step Van. There is a Grumman Allied Industries Inc for ?? Olson Corporation manufacturer plate with a number of : 16353KSC6610A. I cannot find anything via the interweb, for any decoding for this type of number. The chassis is newer, so the VIN number is different than this number. It is affixed to the dash on the passenger side entry way with flathead screws (looks to be original and untouched/worn) https://pix.sfly.com/XgUBD9. I am looking for a manufacturer date from this serial number. This particular van does not have the curved side glass as I have seen in many step vans. It was said to have been a UPS truck. I have been in the process of removing paint and polishing the aluminum, and the paint has been a really dark brown. The wheels are an 8 lug 8x19.5 with four circle cut-outs....not your typical wheel as you would see on most pics on a google search. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
