I bought a 77 chevy g10 about a year and half ago and have been greatly enjoying it and fixing it up a bit. the speedometer is currently broken (I think it is the cable) and I have no idea how many miles are on it. I live near a bunch of junk yards. What is unique about this van I think is that the manual tyranny 3 speed has been modified so the last owner or someone put the sifter in on the floor, but installed it in such a way that the shifting is backward to what one would normally do. So up and to the right is the first gear, lower left is second and upper left is 3rd. lower right is reverse.

The van already had foam insulation sprayed everywhere but its wood panels were missing in some places. It already had a wooden bed platform in the back which i made expandable to make the bed double in size and move forward so that the entire back can sleep two people comfortably but not take up space in daily driving. Also I added solar panels, I put new panels on the walls, I added a roof vent, I added a swivel to passenger seat and got better seats from junk yard, I swapped my sliding door that had one solid non operating window for another door with the two pop out windows and I swapped one of the rear doors for one with a window and a tire holder to the other door. I have a few RV windows and might add a big window to the drivers rear side of the van.

I also own another two vehicles I love. one being a 2.8 v6 S10 long bed with 200,000 miles on it and a 98 chevy geo metro (made by suzuki). I added sun roofs to those vehicles and I did a lot of mods to those vehicles. im active on the geo metro forum and the chevy s10 forum and have taught people how to add cruise controls from other vehicles on non cruise vehicles and done lots of inventive things.

Anyway I find the 77 quite peppy and fun to drive. Its running really strong. I will post pictures soon.

Im also looking for a little advice and might start a separate thread about towing. I wonder if others have towed with these 6 cylinder engines or the manual tranny.

I will have to move in about 7 -10 months so I'm slowly preparing for that. I have a utility trailer (weighs 900 lbs) and I was for fun thinking of adding a trailer hitch the g10 van as either the main or back up towing vehicle for this move or just for having that versatility in the future. My s10 can tow the trailer but it is still a small truck and i think maybe it has a total of less HP than the G10. They are probably pretty close in power, or if the van is more powerful its probably also heavier than the small body/skinny s10. I will probably find a hitch easy in one of the 4 junk yard I'm lucky to have near by... as there are lots of chevy vans popping up in the yards around here .I'm wondering if people think about using this van at all for towing. I know the g10 is only a 1/2 ton rated van but honestly there are not that much differences i see from the g20. Do people think this will damage this Van? is that crazy? I heard manual trannys are good for towing, and of course i would not be driving hard, just for the time moving. It is a 200 mile move and I might do 2 trips. My s10 does OK but really trying to protect its tyranny and am wanting to add a tyranny cooler to the s10.

TBH part of me think the L6 in the G10 is a solid engine, or course either way it will eat up a lot of gas.

Any thoughts appreciated. this looks like a great place to share questions, info and ideas.
