Everybody always assumes a smaller engine will get better gas mileage. That is not true. When the V6 is not strong enough to push a 4,000lb truck around, it will waste more fuel than a larger engine which will work much less to push the same weight.

the proof was an 87 Chevy shorty I had that came with a straight 6. The 6 got 10 MPG in city driving, stop and go. It worked very hard to push this van. I dropped in a 350 from a Camaro, with headers, 4 barrel and 3/4 race cam (not a known great MPG setup). I got 15 MPG in the same city traffic and the highway mileage nearly doubled from 11 MPG to 19 MPG.

my inline 230 gets 17-18 consistently, with the 3 speed manual. as long as I keep it under 65. about half highway, half city.

Just checked my mileage on my 95 shorty with a 305. Got a solid 16mpg nostly highway at 65+ with some city driving. Thats with two bad front tires, low pressure in the rears and before I did the much needed tune up.Also wworking on the egr check engine light. I would expect to get 17-18 on the next fill up. Sometimes a v6 in these heavy vans is no better at efficiency than a small babied v8.

My 92 Dodge B250 with a 3.9 V6 gets about 15.5 to 16 mpg. Most of my driving is at 50 to 70 mph. Very little city driving. Actually wish i had a small V8 with an AOD transmission. Think I would get about the same MPG' or better and have more acceleration.
