I closed the deal this past Sunday and picked up a 1982 Chevy G-20 Shorty with flairs, sunroof and vent. As soon as I figure out the easy way to post photo's I will.
You need firefox browser then upload your pictures to photobucket.com then whenyou hover over a picture click on "IMG Code" it will automatically copy then come back to your vanning.com thread and respond in "Full reply Screen" then rick click in white area and click paste, it will show just the image code, if you'd like there's an option to preview just click "Preview Reply" to see where your images are in the message and you can tweek it from there.
Hope this helps good luck and hope to see some pictures real soon!
I have never used Firefox, is that required or is it just easier than IE?
Thanks, Scott
Firefox isnt necessary, but the site runs smoother. I have to run on I.E. for the moment and its working fine for me. Just not as fast.
Congratulations on the van!
And yes most of us use
www.photobucket.com for posting pictures on this site. It is free and very easy to use. There is a thread about posting pictures in the computer help section.
I have AT&T DSL and Flickr is included so I guess I will try that first. Thanks to all.
You can also post pictures from flickr. There is a share button next to the picture that will give you links. I think you need to copy the short url and post it here.
Can I ask what that went for ? I like to know what I missed out on.
Very nice score!!! What are the plans?
Unfortunatley I am going gut most of the interior, I have kids so I need to put a sofa with seatbelts in (I already have a full set of furniture). I have already started making lots of changes, we are going camping this weekend so I have busy getting the sofa in, I will post more pictures today.
Very nice score gongrats and if it is as nice as it looks you got a bargain!!
Cool find. Buff it out and find some nice wider wheels. Good price.
Yes I agree the wheels were first on the list, I think these will do.
She is a beauty! Sure wish mine were in as good of condition, but hey you get what you paid for as mine was $400 bucks. Keep us posted on your progress!
Welcome, nice van, you want to get rid of that cabinet and bed
very nice, the new wheels look great.....
have to love it when the kids help. very nice van
Love the family participation. I shouldve took pics of my nine year old girl when she helped me do that to my van. First time she used a drill but you couldnt tell
Cleaned up the front end, removed the air dam, it was cracked, broken and repared in 2 spots, its was abs like the flairs and was warped out of shape in the center, I also removed the fog lights and driving lights.
I think the front end looks a lot better now.
i totally understand the need for hauling kids -that's why i put my '84 together the way i did... sure cleaned up nicely and those Cragars look sweet...
it's awesome that you got your kids to help - mine's still a little too young to do most things, but he still helps me on occasion...
why did you take the lights off...?
cleaned up real nice

The fog lights were not my style at all and then I pulled the driving lights also to see it without and just ended up looking better to me.
Looking good! I myself like fog lights on the bottom of the front bumper! Keep on Truckin!
i think it looks better now, sweet van!
I have an Emperial cooler I took out if anybody is interested.
Nice looking van. Makes me want a Chevy.
The pain looks like it could be buffed to perfection.
Too bad the interior had to go. Looks a perfect setup for a frequent traveler / living in it.
Very Nice!! much better shape and deal than the vantastic conversion you were looking at. That seating arrangement looks great in there style color and fit. I like the lights off or hidden and I'm kinda into to keeping the front spoiler but then again I'm on my 4th one so I do understand removing it. Best of luck with it, that is a excellent family affair.
Congratulations on getting the van.
Great choice on the wheels and tires!
Is that the van out of Macomb, Michigan ?
I picked it up in Richmond, MI not sure if that is near Macomb.
I picked it up in Richmond, MI not sure if that is near Macomb.
Ya, Macomb county. I remember it from craig's list. Richmond is about 10 miles from me. Good look'n shorty.
Lookin sharp. I like the new seats.
nothing like having a fresh engine, nice
whooo.. purty! Wanna drop that in my dodge! Haha and piss both sides off!
the out side of the van looks SWEET.
The pliad dash would have to go......
I wonder what color vinyl is under all that uglyness?.
Nothing as nice as a Van with a fresh strong running V/8......
.......Wookee
looking good....
I think I kinda like the old school dash pad....
Sorry have not posted any progress so here are some pic's. I am just in front to rear drivetrain mode right now. I will get back to the interior when drivetrain is complete.
Pulled engine & tranny in one shot.
Tranny cleaned up, new mount, shift and drain kit installed
Tranny installed & new motor mounts
Now that I posted the past pics you can see that I am ready to figure out exhaust and will need all you chevy guys to help! I had a set of Flowtech headers for a prior camaro project and just can't get them between the frame rail. I knew I would not be able to use the manifold off the 305 (the dipstick issue). I am doing side pipes so I do not want long tube headers. I know some have tried the shorty and block hugger headers that did not work. I would like to keep cost around $200, I found some early Corvette manifolds at a decent price has anybody tried them? the link is below.
Corvette manifold Nice work my man! That new engine looks awesome in there.
This is going to be one bad ass van!
They did make a set of long tube headers to fit a 3rd gen Chevy. You need to check with Hooker or Headman who have been making headers for a long time.
To be honest after running a set on a 3rd gen.Unless your engine is a high horsepower monster a set of factory down and out the back cast iron manifolds will do just fine.
Add a set of 21/2 inch pipes and a quality set of mufflers you will have lots of trouble free miles.
One of the biggest issues with long tube headers on a van is heat sink of the started. They also make the started harder to pull or change out.
Sorry the corvette manifolds will not clear the cross member/sub frame......
.........Wookee
Wookee, I was hoping you would chime in on this. I was thinking the same way, this small block I did mild with 9.5-1, Performer package and stock heads. I was leaning towards manifolds due to heat, leaks and side pipe issues with headers but I no longer have any manifolds on the scrap pile.
If the center dump Corvette's will not work I would assume I need any early rear dump (under plug) sbc (not 305) manifolds?
Thanks, Scott
I thought you did not like chevys
Nice work nice van.....
The rear dump manifolds came on both vans and pick ups.
They are not too hard to find at the pick and pull yards.
They might be available brand new....some where
One issue with used ones are the bolts that hold the pipes in place.I have pretty good luck removing the old ones then re taping/chasing the holes and putting new bolts back in place.
I have a set off of a 77 350 that will be going on my 89 GMC.
.......Wookee
Very Nice
Thanks Wookee, I will make some calls and be heading out to my local yards today. Yep the studs will be the main concern.
Happy Thanksgiving!
If you have a set of torches, clamp the manifold up in a vise and heat around the stud and gently work ito ut, be patient and don't get in a hurry and it should come right on out. Nice van by the way.
That just looks so sweet in there! Gotta love a fresh detailed engine.

Just be careful not to heat the manifolds too much as it makes the metal brittle.
As always, thanks for the tips and the comments. I got a buddy who claims hes got a set with good studs but he's the buddy we all have that has the gold plated parts ($$$). I will find some today. Hope to put some fire in those holes this weekend.
Thanks, Scott
LMC truck has them brand new but they are pricey.
129.00 each...they also list the heat riser.
The picture they show is not the correct manifold.
......Wookee
Quick update: Been very busy and have not posted, I did find a set of old manifolds in the yard, I pulled them for $20 and needed to change the studs (always a pain in the $%#). I will try and get some new pics posted this weekend.
Great looking van. The detailed engine looks sweet. Looks like it will be a nice runner with many trouble free miles.
Oooops! I cleaned some duplicate files out of flickr and it screwed up some previous post in this topic, not sure how to fix it sorry.
Very nice work on the Chevy looks good! That was a sweet mid you had there! Those two vans are very sweet!!
I loved that Ford I had that 20+ years ago when I worked in a van shop, back then I did not take pictures of anything (regret it know) but that is the only picture I could find of it.
that's totally AWESOME that your daughter is helping - good work...!
new paint looks great... keep up the good work...!
Very nice.
That orange is a great color.

always great to see the younger future generation helpin and being involved
That's so cool that you have your daughter helping!
Awesome work! How come you didn't paint the u-joints black?
And...what makes you think, that's the daughter, maybe she is the van owner
Kudos to her though for getting involved.
Yep she's the one! I have 2 girls and they both are tomboy's, both ride dirt bikes, on the back of our bikes, go-karts and go to the races but my youngest (9yrs) likes to work on things with me, the other has no interest.

They must be related to my girls. My oldest just wants to read books. She will lend a hand occasionally tho. That's it though, just a hand!
Just another picture, Im just going hate having to cover this up!
Man,that motor looks great!

Somebody make one?
I'm late to this thread but wanted to say congrats! I love it!
Keep up the good work.

You could cut holes in your dog house and put lexan windows in it. Be sure to seal them well though.
Looks good! And to the youngin' You go girl! lol
Nice outcome! Looks much better IMO!
cover it up. YOU know whats under there and that's all that matters.
The real test is if you pull the dog house back off in 6 months and all that is under there is a little dirt. You did a good job putting the engine together.
Stck the dog house on it and drive it like you stole it!!!!!!!!!!
My youngest daughter (22) knows more about cars and vans than most of the guys she dates.
She can out drive then too.....
Where you amember of Mason Dixon vans back in the late 70's?
.......Wookee
Wookee, I hear ya, as usual I probably will have valve cover leaks, tranny pan, etc or get lucky.
As far as Mason Dixon, I did not get my first van till the late 80's and have not been in any club's.
Sorry the brown Ford looked like one that one of there members owned.
Mason Dixon was a van/bike club here in the Baltimore area.
I thought i read in your introduction you where originaly from MD......
Tthe long tabs for SBC valve covers really help to keep them sealed up.
My SBC is still covered with over spray from the last paint job..........
.........Wookee
You are making some great progress with the van, Looks awesome!
That is so cool that your daughter likes wrenching on the van with you.
Very cool pics...thanks for sharing !
Man, you are really going to town with this van. I love it!
Keep up the good work!
Nice job and nice to see your helpers still at it.
I think I have a problem, nobody that has looked at these pictures said anything about OSB on the floor. I just read another post that said never use OSB on the floor. The van will not be sitting outside everday, but rain on trips and washing it also. Should I rip it up and start over with plywood?
As always, thank you all!
Scott
In the long run water on wood is always a problem. Plywood will swell just as bad as OSB if not worse. It's particle board that you never want to use. The key is to seal it with a
solvent based Sanding sealer. Most construction grade foundation materials have been treated with moisture resistant chemicals of one kind or another. If you don't want to get into remaking everything pull your floors and seal them with a clear sanding sealer and reinstall but that to me would be overkill. The OSB will last longer then your van if the van seals are tight. IMHOP. The walls should be fine b/c no water is going to lay on/under the wood.
Nice work going on there BTW.
Wish it was mine.
I prefer plywood over OSB, but as long as it doesn't get soaked, you shouldn't have any issues. Like Friction said, you need to keep it dry whichever you use.
read the whole thread, wish i had that van i love it!! i saw you had taken it camping, i love to do that to, kinda cramped in a shorty but fun none the less, one of my fondest memories from being a kid was camping and my dads old dodge van
keep up the great work and congrats on a sweet ride
Skip
oh by the way, i have a love/hate relationship with my windows, love the look and privacy without them, like to fling the shades up when i hear something arouind me while camping and being able to see out all the way around
look forward to seeing more of your progress

We are bikers so we do alot of tent camping, and when we have the kids with us, we let them sleep in the van. I am seting up the interior so when we have no kids the sofa/bed is quick release and will be taken out so me and moma can just lay down the air matress.
Have a couple bikes myself, seems like i never have time to get out on 'em or get out camping these days
i spent some time this summer building a rigid old ironhead sporty i had been collecting parts for it for years and finally dove in and built it then submitted a pic to the readers rides section of The Horse magazine and to my suprise 3 months later it was in there
couple pics of 'em...
Good lookin hardtail sporty, my 1st Harley was an Ironhead Sporty I bought in a box for $600 when I had the Ford Van in my signature 20+ years ago, finished it and road it to the 90th in Milwaukee (1993) and sold it. Bought my beloved Shovelhead after that, completely customized it and rode it till I bought my current ride (2000 FLHT), got spoiled from the comfort (My back loves it) and ended up selling my Shovel when my 1st child was on the way, I regret it to this day. I will post some pics when I scan them.

Hi, whats the silver stuff and bags of padding you have behind the panels on the wall?
The silver stuff is called Reflectix, if you do a search you will find other post about it, the white is Johns Manville (not sure on spelling) wrapped insulation. Both products are house stuff bought at Lowes.
Looks great! What kind of padding is that? Looks like some nice stuff. Better than the recycled crap they use all over today.
Ken, that padding came from a buddy, the red is like a seal and he said it was called NoSpill, I said "Perfect" keep spilled beer from soaking into the padding!
Cool, thanks! I'll have to look it up when I'm ready.
interiors lookin sweet! nothin like the smell of new carpet (if it is new carpet).
Great choice on the carpet color! That interior is going to look really nice. Keep up the good work!
I just love this van it's the same color mine was when i first bought it keep up the good work.
This is turning into one sweet ride!!!

The paint code is 69 Walnut Metallic Solid, never been a fan of brown but this color really pops in the sun and I like it.
More Pictures! The fabric is Brown Tie-Dye fleece, the camera flash made it look different, doing the ceiling in this.

lookin good..always good to have helpin hands
I see you brought in the interior specialist to help get the job done... Nice
Looking good bro!
Thank you all for the comments, I have a quick question for all the Chevy guys with sliders. Of course I used the same carpet for the slider and it turned out a little fat around the edges, will there be clearance issues? Just would like to know before hanging the door and finding out then.
IMG_6987 by
Bikertrash00, on Flickr
I like the look of the material. Nice choice. Sorry, can't answer your slider ? as I've never owned one, but as long as it doesn't protrude past the edge of the door I would think you should be fine.
If the door carpet hits anywhere, it will be the back edge (the right hand side looking at it in the photo). But I would just trim it after if it's a problem, try it like that for now and see if it clears.
Im still workin on it, have not posted in a while, been so busy but here is More Pictures of the progress.

Hey man thats groovy! Looks real nice.
Thank you all for the great comments, I received my side pipes yesterday
, can't wait the get them on and will post the pics. I am getting close to finishing up and hope to get plenty of breakin miles before The Nats.
Fine work there, every thing looks
Looks awesome I've always wanted to do that, put a conversion interior /lighting into a cargo van that looks really good!!
I sent the sidepipes back, I bought the Patriot 4 into 1 and the weld on one of the collectors (passenger side) looked like my daughter welded it (popcorn) and chrome did not even get into parts of the weld. New set should be here tomorrow.
Those pipes must have been built at Beer Thirty.
(Friday afternoon after the shop got paid at lunch time)
Nice looking interior work.
The side pipes will look good on your van.
.........Wookee
Great job and very inspiring. Looking very forward to the finished product.
looking good.Sorry to hear about the trouble with you side pipes.
Here are some More Pictures! More interior work with RGB lighting. The 2nd set of sidepipes came Saturday and the weld looked good but one of the tubes had big gouge from shipping. 3rd set is on the way.

The lights look sweet....
wow man, very nice van and super work
man this thing has come together so nice! ive always wanted to put conversion lights in a cargo. now to find me a junk dodge conversion!
That interior is coming out nice hurry up and finish so we can steal all your ideas.
My carpet color is very similar to your and I really like your bench seat, after seeing it I decided to have mine redone it's at the shop now. I also like the boxed wheel wells have been having a hard time figuring how to install my carpet around there, cool idea with the cup holders. Keep up the nice work, lights are cool.
Thanks for the comments, the boxed wheel wells hold my 2nd battery on the passanger side and on the driver side all my power, audio, HDMI cables for the flat screen going on the wall. The cup holders are half ass functional due to my lack of measurements (drink another). Got my 3rd set of side pipes yesterday and guess what, they have damage also, they have offered me $85 off to keep them, I am tired of dealing with it so I think I am going to take it. Will post more pics soon.
Scott
lookin real sharp. how much were those LEDs?
lookin real sharp. how much were those LEDs?
The LED's are whats known as an RGB strip used in interior lighting (Bars, Clubs, Houses) so they come with an AC adaptor but they actually run on 12VDC. It was purchased in a 16ft roll with remote, adapter and controller for around $40. They can be cut and soldered evrey 3 LED's so the controller is in the overhead console then cut and wired from there.
A few more pictures! Rejetting carb and Sidepipes installed.

Those sidepipes look great!! Betcha it sounds a lot better too!
They have a similar style lighting at IKEA.
They come with a controller so you can change colors.
Also around 40.00 a set.
I was going to buy them and just set them up to run when i have the van hooked up to power at a Truck in.
It is neat to know they will run off of an adapter from the vans battery.....
with the little ones watch them care fully getting in and out of the van, IF those side pipes are hooked up.They will put a nasty burn on your leg it you get up against them getting in or out of the van.
the do look pretty sweet.
How is the fresh engine running?
Great looking work.

The LED lighting should be the same set, has remote, all different colors and fade, strobe etc. they do run on 12v DC without the adaptor.
The pipes are not hooked up yet, maybe this week. I have already warned the kids but they already know about hot pipes due to our bikes.
Right now there is just a Y pipe with no muffler so I have not driven it around alot yet but will need some tuning.
Man the van is looking SWEET!!!
I have been working on the motor, and trying to finish things up but I have not posted any pictures due to Flicker stating I have reached the 200 picture limit, I did not know there was a limit, does Photobucket have a limit? I would hate to redo all of this.
Photobucket has a limit, but it's way up there. Start a new photobucket account and continue with it.
Thanks, I didnt even think about that, I was thinkin I had to move all the pictures. Duh!
Thanks again!
I have well over 1,000 pictures on my photobucket, and still going strong. Never knew there was a limit. Ken had a great suggestion though.
Been awhile since I checked this thread. The van is coming along nicely. I really like the lighting upgrades (may have to do that myself)
And the side pipes look awesome!
That interior is freakin sweet!
Love the wood accents. Not too much and sets off the colors well.
Youve' come a long way baby! Looks awsome!! Like wookee said if those sidepipes are hooked up they get HOT! My sister burned her leg pretty bad (she also did on my bike though to I guess
) That was my biggest worry when I had the shorty was the kids would get burned. The look and sound is awsome though! I will have to look into those LED's they look awsome!!
That looks fantastic..keep up the good work.
Thank you all for the comments. The LED's are cool but I already have a section of 3 that the G & B (green & blue) has went out so I might have to order some more to fix it. Right now I need to figure out what to do about my oil dipstick before I finish the doghouse, it is a Gen 1 SBC with the short dipstick, they have a long chrome one at the zone for $10 I think I will get that and bend it with my tubing bender. I have looked at the junk yard with no luck.
Do those sidepipes have any mufflers in them?
Do those sidepipes have any mufflers in them?
Yes they do, they are long glasspacks, pretty mild right now, hoping they get louder as they burn in.
500 miles and a few good whacks with a rubber mallet will break em in good
I am NOT letting gas prices keep me home.It actually dropped 10 cents around here.
I cant wait to see this van at the "Nationals" this year.
Meeting you and your helpers will also be a big bonus.
There where three different guys running those pipes in out club at one time.(we are taking a short ride in the way back machine).
There girl friends all had a burn on the back of there calf from those pipes.
They will last longer if you just run them unhooked for show.
You will be lucky to get two years out of them hooked up.
Sorry not trying to pee on your parade.....
........Wookee
The interior looks Great. If you stuff a Bunch of grease in the inlet of the Pipes, it will coat the insides and help keep them from turning Blue,BUT Smoke like Crazy for awhile it will.
What part of Northern Indiana ya from ?

The helpers wont be coming, just me and the wife.
I did run the exhaust from opposite sides and back behind the crossmember to try and control heat, I am sure onece I get on a long run they will turn gold towards the front. Not really an issue cuz the van is not a show piece.
2 yrs, did the others just rust away, turn colors or just tired of the burns. I actually have another set in the garage that have some shipping damage that Fed Ex was supposed to pick up but have not yet (30 days).
No they don't turn blue.It is just the way they are constructed.
They don't get a good chrome plating like they should. The constant road grime being thrown up on them getting baked in really shortens this style of side pipes life.Run them in the salt.....I won't go there.
I had a set my self when Doug Thourley was making them.
Never hooked them up ran the exaust out the side right behind them.
Yes, that was my 1st and last Ford Van
.......Wookee
I originaly was going to cut a hole in the back side and feed my favorite Flowmaster 40's through, oh well mabey next time.
Does not sit outside and will not see snow (salt).
500 miles and a few good whacks with a rubber mallet will break em in good
That works on some women too, I'm told
Not mine
Younger women can be a little stubborn!
The helpers wont be coming, just me and the wife.
I did run the exhaust from opposite sides and back behind the crossmember to try and control heat, I am sure onece I get on a long run they will turn gold towards the front. Not really an issue cuz the van is not a show piece.
2 yrs, did the others just rust away, turn colors or just tired of the burns. I actually have another set in the garage that have some shipping damage that Fed Ex was supposed to pick up but have not yet (30 days).
After 30 days i doubt they are coming. If you decide you want to sell em let me know! Southbend sounds like a nice day trip.
Nice job on the interior!
Thanks for all the comments!
If you are worried about bluing or turning gold, there is a coating made for bike pipes. I can't remember the name off hand, but it works great. You tape off one end of the pipe and pour the bottle in and shake it around then pour the excess out and wait for it to dry. It seems to work well. It has a funky name like floop or something like that.

Yep, I remember that stuff, never used it. Screw it they are on, look good and functional. Only time will tell.
Wow! it has been a while but here is some more pics of recent stuff, has not been much left to do interior wise and have been working out mechanical bugs.
Installed the 1080 Flat Screen
Changed gear lube, painted cover
Added stickers
The vanning.com Sticker
love that vannin'.com decal.
Haha! Looks like we're going in reverse order! Nice job on the van... very inspirational.
Going to be nice having a new front end under her !!...yes cold ones do help..specially bottles !!
Did not do much last night but strip the calipers and clean parts, oh and
Cleaning and renewing parts has a strangely calming effect.
I think it's actually very therapeutic.

I'm diggin some of that Bacardi.....rum and cokes...oh so good..........
I am going to take the lowers to a garage and have bushings and ball joints pressed out and new in, anybody estimate what the charge would be?
Parts have started ariving, I ordered all Moog parts (always have used Moog)all that have arived are Made in USA which I was worried about ordering through Rock Auto. I dont mean to be anal but my 2 upper ball joints are the same part number but different style and materials, See Picture. Questions is which one to send back, I ordered the problem solver which is stamped on the one on the left and that one is cast the other is stamped which is what I was going to send back.
I also received 2 of my KYB shocks one front and one rear, the front one is white the rear is silver, WTF! When I receive the others I will send 2 of those back also. Oh the white was made in Mylasia and the silver Japan.
Got my drop spindles, I ordered Summit G703's and that is what was on the box, opened the box and all the documentation is for a company called Ground Force (Made in USA), after looking them up there products are more expensive than what I paid and have good comments.
Yup...I try and buy USA stuff when ever I can....but it's getting harder and harder all the time.....looking forward to seeing how your van turns out with the drop...
Your van is looking great! A suspension rebuild is on my list too, maybe next year though. Are you going to replace the control arm bushings? If so will you be using stock rubber or aftermarket urethane? I love your wheel and tire combo also, I will be buying a set of Cragars real soon, but may have to skimp on the tires. The BFG's look so great but the cooper cobras are about $300 less. What is your wheel and tire size combo,if you don't mind sharing.

Ground Force is a good company they been around for awhile , they sponsored my One ton Dually many years ago .
good stuff there buddy !

Thank You! I am changing control arm bushings using stock rubber, urathane looks cool but tends to squeek. Tire combo is 15 x 8 with 245/60 and 15 x 10 with 295/50.
Looking good and I'm sure it will ride nice as well!!
Looking forward to seeing how front tire clearance works out with the front end drop....any up-dates
Sa-weet...........
Looks really nice! Did you use POR15 on the calipers and rotors first?
Looks really nice! Did you use POR15 on the calipers and rotors first?
The orange is actually POR15 engine enamel.
Ah, cool! I used that on my Mid Dodge engine years ago.
Ah, cool! I used that on my Mid Dodge engine years ago.
Well so did I, and am still using it, 1 pint goes a long way.
Nice! You will be happy to know it holds up very well too. As far as I know it still looks as good as the day I painted it and it was prolly about 15 years ago.

Looks GREAT!!!
Just picked up my control arms and the damage was $140 (just labor) for all the bushings and lower ball joints, They claim they cut me a break cuz it took them over 3 hours to do it. Oh well saves me from the headache!
Looking good man! I will have to catch up on this thread again. I see you use budweiser boxes for cardboard. I use water heater boxes. Must be watever we go through the fastest aye?
Lookin good man!

Ok here we go with More Pictures of the front end rehab!
Yes that is POR15
Lookin good !!
...meet U over at
shout box for a beer tonight ?
cool.......
There was a question of clearance issues with the drop spindles and the offset of my Cragars. As seen in the picture the only issue is with wheel weights and they will have to be relocated. More pictures later.
Oooooh! Purdy! Looks GREAT!
lookin good...need more pics..wanna see that stance !
Looking good! Were you able to keep that POR 15 off your skin? Last time I used that stuff I was black for two weeks.

A box of the nitril gloves are alway nice to have around!
Woo Hoo
Clean machine............
How about a couple more
..... Pictures
Wow that looks great!!
Keep those pics coming!
That looks great. Need a pic of the stance now with the drop spindles in place.
The bowtie/harley orange on the coils, calipers and pan really makes the underside of your van pop. Better invest in an underside mirror to highlight those details if you plan to show it. Top notch work, really sweet Van.
That looks great. Need a pic of the stance now with the drop spindles in place.
That's what I'm patiently waiting for ...
Looking good !!!!!
my front rims have more dish that must be why I thought it would rub...looks great !
Now that's what I call stance! Lookin good!

The spindles did push my wheel out a little, like others have stated and it fills my flairs better, but now the fender is in play. I was a little worried so since everybody was over yesterday for NASCAR I put 2 in the front seats, 2 standing on footwell, then 1 on my flip out bumper step (about 1,200 lbs) had them bounce and we could get it to hit the bump stop but not the fender. I love the look and the rake is perfect!
Looks good. Wow, I wish I had that many friends!
Gotta love the look. It really helps the LWB as well.
Mine will touch slightly on the passenger side but has never touched on the drivers side(?). The edge of the road is just rougher I guess.
Have you measured your total drop yet?
I like your idea for testing, try it one more time with the tires turned hard right and then hard left, as that is when you are more likely to rub, hitting a bump or pothole while turning tight.
As far as the looks, it looks PERFECT in my opinion. . . Great job !

I did not measure Flair to ground but fender to tire was 4 3/4" and is now 2 1/2"
Oh man o man! Looks mean!
Better than new!

Did not even think of that! it's going back up on the stands, have the finish the brakes, including master cylinder due to cover leak.
Thanks for all the compliments, I have a question I put in the shout box also, I have never used Ceramic pads but Advance has a bunch of deal codes and I can get Wearever Platinum Premium Ceramic Brake Pads for about $25 or should I save $10 and put metallics back on? I think I should go for the Ceramics, let me know your opinions.
I have ceramics on my Nitro and love them. I was told they aren't the best for heavy loads, but I also just put them all on my wife's F350 crew cab dually, and they work great. We only use it to haul heavy loads occasionally.
The reason I switched over was they cost a few bucks more than Metallic, but last twice as long, and I've had two sets of metallic pads, rust and stick to the rotors on vehicles that sat for the winter. When you drive after that they rip up the rotors.
IMO, they are worth switching over to.
Thanks for your opinion, I will give them a shot.
Thanks for your opinion, I will give them a shot.
Any time!
Hey BT do you have a link for the ceramic brake pad "codes" ??
The codes are for Advance Auto and are listed below.
20% off sitewide via code "P20" (no minimum)
$10 off orders of $30 or more; $25 off $70 or more; $40 off $110 or more via code "A124"
$20 off $50 or more via code "ES123"
$30 off $75 or more via code "TRT37"
$30 off $90 or more via code "HUGE30"
$40 off $100 or more via code "TRT41"
$50 off $175 or more via code "HUGE50"
I need to have my rotors turned and install a new set of pads myself. I have always used locally available pads from Auto Zone, Orielys, and Advance for my vehicles. This time I am thinking about using a performance pad like EBC or Hawk. Ebay has them for around $50. Reason being is because I ride sport bikes and noticed a huge difference in stopping power between upgraded, or downgraded pads, so I assume it may be the same for a vehicle, just not as noticeable. Bad thing is, that there is no lifetime warranty, but then again I had some one week old lifetime Auto Zone pads before, that I thew away because they are absolute crap!
It's been awhile! I have been on other projects....Here are some more pictures of progress.
Got the new KYB's installed, all 4.
Being I did the rotors and caliper's I had to match the rear..Wow look at the dust.
Lookin good...........
looks nice, glad it came out like you wanted. i need to raise the back of mine up a little.
Lookin good !
Love the new stance! Looks great!

One of the options on this van was heavy duty rear suspension, so it has an extra leaf.
Thanks for all the comments!
Hell Yeah.....Look what I found!
I pulled them all off a 1975 Class C.
WOW Scott...nice
This van makes me want to sell my dodge and start my G10 build.
Some people would whore themselves out to find those front end parts!
How often do we see people in the Wanted section looking for that stuff for ages and you're like "lookie what I found". Ahahahahaahah!
Excellent score!!!!!!!
I can't wait to see the pictures, and could you take some of the conversion in progress!!! As I have a 1982 GMC that I would love to put your parts on.

That is bad ass. Well I know what I am doing this weekend beers and burnout:-)
Ahh,... you beat me to it. Been trying to find someone to help with pics. Nice one though!!!
Nice burnout dude !...
Nice Grille and bumper, what do you think the Value of those are ? I have a couple of them.
Nice burnout dude !...
Thanks Pete, that's where the BEERS or too many came in, as you can see it was not just 1 burnout
I was supposed to do this at the start of the NASCAR race but it didn't happen till about 12 beers later and a crowd of buddies. I actually did 8 total, stopped just before the tire came apart.
Time for some crack seal in those divots!
I love it
...courage in a can..{bottle}
.....fun fun fun !
Nice Grille and bumper, what do you think the Value of those are ? I have a couple of them.
Which grille & bumper, the stuff I picked up off a 75'?
Got to love a van smoking the tires.
Great burn out pics
Sure sure blame it on the
BURNOUT!!!!!!

Thanks for the comments......how about a video.....
Snow is flying so time to make some more changes!
Changing the CB, Head Unit, seat belts.
Cool Scott.....I have some things to do to mine ..gotta get it out of the barn and up to the heated shop as soon as some of the snow melts ..
Pete, you've got her sitting in a cold barn all alone? Shame on you!
Pete, you've got her sitting in a cold barn all alone? Shame on you!
Yeah I know..I do "fluid film" auto undercoating in the fall and early winter, "If you guys don't know what it is you should google it" {payed for the lift} and it gets all over everything in the garage...but now that's over so I can bring the van in and start working on some things.....
Keep up the good work
Lookin good buddy!! And NICE BURNOUT!! It looks like you've done it a few times. (marks on the ground)
Lookin good buddy!! And NICE BURNOUT!! It looks like you've done it a few times. (marks on the ground)
Thanks Chris, yep I do a few burnouts, the fun button helps (line lock)....
....
Ok you know I am a Jack of All......Master of None and finish carpentry is not an top of the list but here are some pictures.
Now that they are short and mitered I need to remove the areas for the recessed lights and replace that area in the front piece for the drop down lcd mount.
Removed this piece without cutting
Then trimmed with jigsaw.
This is the front piece and need to replace the hole
Removed piece and ready to trim
Checking fit
Installed
Thanks! next is getting the router out, stain and finish. More pictures coming soon.
Thanks Pete! Is it beer 30 yet?.....TGIF....
Simply bad azz.....
Extremely cool. Do you hire out?
Nice Work,
Thanks guys! Today was a lot of soldering an shrink tube/heat gun. will post update and pics soon.
.........
Great job there, way cool...
Thanks for the comments, will post more pictures soon!
Following this one. LOVE the rootbeer color.
Nice job!
I've got to get something going in mine like this but I hate wiring.
Nice van! Love the color and side pipes!
Looks awesome! I really like it. I like how you put a pic under the plastic on the light. I've thought about that also, maybe puttin a pic of the "keep on truckin" sign under it.
Looks awesome! You are giving me an itch to work on mine.
Nice Scott....
Looking great...
I really like how you reimagined the junkyard conversion van parts.
Killer. I'm really digging the upholstery material dash and door panels.
Killer. I'm really digging the upholstery material dash and door panels.
Aaaah, I am sorry to hear that because I am working on getting rid of the old material, here are some pictures of the new door panels, I could not get any more of the dark brown tie-die I used on the ceiling so I picked up this light brown. I have not done the dash yet, kinda waiting to find an A/C dash before. I would like everybody's opinion on this color, it matches (very close) the factory door rubber trim and floor mats.
lookin good Scott....I might do something like that in the future....
Nice job Scott, the fabric is a nice contrast with the brown paint.
I like it! Think it really looks good.
Thanks for positive comments, I am still on the fence about the color, I like the contrast also but I think it is a little to much.
I just read this whole thread, and I must say you have done outstanding work. I love it, and it's given me a lot of inspiration for my own project.
Always topnotch work Scott...
Very nice
Thanks again guy's
....More coming soon!
watchin this progress is very cool!
Lookin good Scott. You do great work. Hope to see you in Cortland Ohio in July.
That should get some butts a rumbling, cool
Yep butts rumbling and battery drainin...
getting ready to swap one yellow top for 2 group 31 AGM batteries.
Love it when everything is from scratch...very nice.
The only thing I know about sound systems is turning the volume up...
BUT won't you get the same re-leaf form battery drain by adding a good capacitor. Just asking...as things progress the sound system is going to be a priority 1 when I'm building. Then again are you adding batteries for when the van is in park ?
I have always been told caps are worthless and have never used one. Yep I am changing the battery setup to get more runtime when I do not have a shoreline, have a 110 amp alternator, keeping eye out for a 140 when in the junk yard. Still have to pick up a charger (progressive dynamics) for when I have the shoreline or my generator.
I put some pop-out windows in my Dodge a few years back. I really like them. They look great on your van, plus in the summer you can get some fresh air when hangin out in the back.
Looking good Scott...
Looks awesome! Winter sucks, but it's a good time to work on stuff like this.
I have all ways liked the looks of the louvers on pop out rear windows.......
Looks great man.I would like to change to pop outs some day.
Installed new weatherstrip/door seal on rear doors, no problem till I went to close the doors, any tips or suggestions? I saw the other post about getting them closed and letting it sit in the hot sun, that would be tough this winter
New door seals take a while to conform to there new home.
Sun is not required just close them and let them set.
You can adjust the affected doors to help them close better.
Thanks Wookee! I always value your expert opinion!
I found a tilt column that I was told came out of an 82' but it appears different did they do different ones being it is a bastard year?
My column
Thanks ahead of time!!!!
Scott
They switched from rag joint to a universal joint, all you have to do is switch your end onto the new column one bolt tap it off put yours on.
That was my assumption when I picked it up this summer but it appears shorter and of course smaller in diameter, I will be pulling mine tonight to get a better look at it.
Looks like I need to find a spline rag joint for it, as you can see mine does not come off the column shaft.
Take the clamp loose at the bottom of the column square with a bolt in it, take it loose that adpt comes off.
Thanks for the info, I know the clamp had to be there for that reason but I could not get the shaft (adpt) to budge, I suppose I will just get soaking it with PB and keep working it. I will keep you posted, sorry about the dumb sandwich I ate earlier the week, feel like an idiot!!!
Scott
Scott, I'll send you this rag joint plate for the end of that tilt column, it SHOULD solve your problem. [img:center]
[/img]
I have a 76 non tilt column that has a welded rag joint coupler at the end so I'm thinking maybe that was the NON tilt way of finishing off the steering shaft. All the tilt columns I've played with have splines for the couplers. Many of the parts like wiring, pointer and indicator, levers and bearings are interchangeable with the 67-72 chevy pickup columns and lots of those parts are available
here
Munz you are the man!!!!that is what I was looking for. 78VanMate I am not sure if this is what you were thinking but as I stated I could not get the actual shaft to budge and I did not think I could pull that 5" shaft off below the lower bearing, if so please post pictures so we all know how. This is a much simpler solution for me.
Thanks again Munz
Scott
Got the part today!!!!!It is exactly what I needed!....Thanks Munz! Pictures below
Awesome Scott, glad it work out, it looks so much better on your column than in my parts pile. It pays to hoard these g van parts. hahahah
I have no issues with my original rag joint so I am thinking I am not going to change it why it's apart, if it aint broke don't fix it right? Also don't want to change it out with some china crap. Any opinions on it?
Thanks,
Scott
Looks like the dash had seen better days, cant wait to see the finished dash.
Fur, Fur, Fur......Pictures of the Fur job!
Had to sew the fabric with my trusty Singer!
I did pick the hairs out of the seam, no pic.
Fur looks cool, wiring looks scary
Can't beat an old Singer to get the job done!! looks awesome
Very nice! I'm very interested in seeing the fur dash installed.
wow ! that dash looks awesome
can't wait to see it installed .
Looking damn good, soon you'll be making porno's in there...
Fur job looks great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fur is done, new tilt column is in....can't put my steering wheel as is so time to fresh it up a bit......Pictures.
Original, chrome still little pitted but polished pretty good
Sanded
Fresh Stain
Satin Poly (wet)
Installed....Much Better!
Steering Wheel looks great
Freakin awesome van all the way around
Needs a flea collar on the column.
Looks like Chewbacca hugged the dash!!
I did the same thing with the steering wheel in my Dodge in 2006, it still looks great. (I used gloss urethane instead of satin)
That will protect the wood for years!
Scott, I picture driving down the highway at some point and getting startled because you don't know where you are, your are gonna feel like your driving a different van this summer. Everything you see from the driver seat is fresh. Looks great buddy can't wait to see it this summer.
Thank you all for the comments!!! Munz, I will be crusing in comfort thanks to that tilt wheel (and the part you supplied me), the soft fur and the occasional fur hair in my teeth from smiling
I will post more pictures soon
the dash looks great!
In Russia we have one cartoon heroe, his name is Cheburashka, looks like you jacked one for your dash)))))
Taking her to the first show of the year which is a 2 day indoor show in South Bend known as Cavalcade of Wheels, lots of trailer queens. We will see what other participants say (usually negative) and will show them Vanning is alive and well.....I know the public will love it!
Looks GREAT Scott, Don't worry about negative comments your van is BAD ASS!! Everything about your van is very tasteful, lots of people will admire it and want to know about the vanning scene. Now get out there n represent LOL.
Wow you got more fur than I have. Looks real good!
Very cool, sounded like good times.
WoW that is Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GREAT PICTURES~!!!!
It was nice to chat on Sunday. As always, I love seeing your van as it is inspirational for me. Glad to see you took home some well deserved hardware!
