I picked this one owner B250 a few weeks ago. It is a one owner van with 12k miles, documented. For what ever reason, it was traded into the local Fayetteville NC Mercedes delership in June '11. The Benz dealer had no interest in it, so it got sold to a local used car dealer. They recognized it for what it is. A time capsule. That's where I picked it up.
It has an injected 318, overdrive automatic, cold a/c, tilt steering and cruise control. It all works... and works very well.
Perhaps I should let the photos speak from themselves.
Wow, that thing is CLEEEEEEAAAAAAN!
After having it home for a few weeks, I've got to say that it runs and drives like a one year old van. I've put about 1,500 miles on it. Working out some bugs. Nothing big. So I figured that it's about time to show the old van some love.
New wheels, tires. Tinted windows. Flowmaster exhaust.
It runs like a champ!
very very clean good luck with her !!
Thanks!
A Nice score, sweet it is, Enjoy.
Thats a nice van ya got there...
super clean, is it a 91 ??what are your plans ??

until
IT WAS IN HIS DRIVEWAY... good luck
dude thats sweettttttttt! love the color on it too...cant wait to see how you make out with it
Nice score,That thing looks brand new
Amazing, that you found such a clean car.
Over here, such cars are normally in camouflage from the depot of the german army, no extras and small diesel-engines.
But they are rust-free, and that's all, what counts.
Congratulation, and enjoy your ride.
man is that a nice van....
2 thumbs up, good luck with it! Did you have to remove the plastic from the seats?
Man that thing is like new! Congrats on the score!
neautiful van! great score, if i may be so bold, what was the asking price?
Congratulations on the super clean van!
And great choice on the new wheels.
looks flawless! realy nice.
only it looks a bit loud.. like scream-talking when cruising down the highway ;)
NOS Vent Shades..
I'm very proud of the advances that have been made with the interior..
Can't go wrong with some classic reading material..
and I would be remiss if I left out my ol' front plate
Chuck...diggin the "Icecube" cooler I have one I keep between my seats...were gettin there buddy !
A real cherry and same color as mine " Whore House Red"!!!!Nice find good luck!!Whatever you paid it was worth it.You have a "new" Old van wich is priceless!!
A Cube cubicle is part of my interior plans
" WOW " sweet find man , congrats on your new van , good luck with it , i would say its coming along nicely , i am liking the Bar setup ,
Wow, that's what I need for a daily driver to replace my white bus, you scored big.

I gotta start somewhere Rickie
Oh my. Wow. Nice. SCHWING!.
That, my friend, is my dream van. 80's Dodge, factory fresh, blank canvas in the back. Looking forward to some updates!

That's right there has to be a starting point
are those factory dodge wheels? or dodge center caps on an aftermarket wheels? I like the way you have yours, and my wheels are very similar, was wondering how you did it?
Dang, I would feel guilty putting more than 1500 miles a year on it!
are those factory dodge wheels?
they are 15x8 Cragar Soft 8s with 2001 Dodge pick up center caps. They fit perfectly with no modifications at all. The T/As are 275/60s.
nice! that interior is a real inspiration!
That van is SWEEEEET
Cant wait to see more pics when interior is done.
I like your method of laying out the interior.

Watch out for the paper cuts
10-4 Chuck.....
I bought a parts van today. Why would I need a parts van you ask? For parts, duh! Well, mostly for templates. My '88 has a very base, no trim interior. The parts mobile is a loaded Royal SE. So the plan is to drop the headliner, full length side panels, all 6 door panels will be used for templates. There is some other cool interior parts that will be used as inspiration.. like the way cool 70's cup holder
l
it's even got a Pentastar insert!
awesome. Im so jealous lol
Hey Mutt, good eyes on catching the Pentastar cutout in your cupholder; I honestly think I'd never have caught that!
Having that Royal SE for parts is going to be awesome for you - great score! I stripped one of those too, although there were a bunch of interior parts I couldn't use, since it was a shorty and I have a maxi. You may find that baby's going to stick around your yard a lot longer than you originally planned once you see what all goodies are in it! I bet you could fill up a garage pretty quickly... I should know, LOL!!
You may find that baby's going to stick around your yard a lot longer than you originally planned once you see what all goodies are in it
That's why it's not parked at my house
I'm thinkin about gettin a chevy conversion to part-out..there a dime-a-dozen around here and I have plenty of room to hide it behind the shop...
Thats just about the best way to do it when trying to make a stock cargo van interior nicer. Cheapest too!
Finally pulled the dog house to have a look around. Every thing was all original. 1/88 date coded plug wires. The plugs looked good. But they're 23 years old. So it all got replaced.
I picked up an NOS class 5 trailer hitch a few weeks ago. The wiring got installed today as well. I got a combo plug that has a flat four way plug and a round 7 way plug. What a great idea. No adaptors needed.
The stainless steel vent shades are now on the front doors.
Not a great stride, just a few small steps forward.
As of today, I have put just over 3,500 miles on the Ram. Looking back at the prior annual average, I have put 7.5 years of milage on the van since July. It's running excellent. The trip to Keystone was great. I can't stop driving it!
I gots lots of plans!
I'm glad to hear your really enjoying your van
I had a good visit to my local junk yard. I scored 4 factory tinted pop out windows. They came from a conversion van, so I grabbed the trim panels from the barn doors to use as templates. Thery're not in bad shape so I will prolly toss them on the doors just because. I also found a pair of factory front door step well liners. They are in very good shape and I will appreciate not slipping when my shoes are wet.
So far I've only installed the pop outs on the back doors... the sides are soon to follow.
Great find! Lookin Good !
Nice! Those plastic step liners ive been looking for to put on mine as well. Havent had much luck so far
Yup, the pop out windows are great when spending the weekend in the van. Nice upgrade.
Just don't drive down a dirt road with them open.

no doubt!

Just gota watch for wet dirt under them and cause in rust!!
It's been a wonderful fall here in the Shenandoah Valley. I've been running the wheels of this thing while I've been collecting parts & materials for the interior.
I've put 5k miles on it since I bought it in Mid-July! It's not even my daily driver! Here's a couple of random shots..
Nice.........
Very Cool Mutt
Van on
Nice shots! Van is looking good.

As well you should my brother.. I've used that as a background for photos of my cars for a long time. i just dig the way the old place looks.. shooting the van there is a different animal, it's a little taller that the others. It blocked the building, so I adjusted a little.
Here's on of my Duster in the same spot from a couple of years ago..

Nice looking van you got there!!!! From my vantage point she looks showroom fresh. I am too looking forward to pics of the interior build.

I had a great ride back. I took Rt 11 all the way to New Market. Rt 211 over the mountain, then 340 north home.
Those wide BFG's really help it stick in the turns. I got quite a look from a kid in a Honda on 211 on the way up to Skyline Drive
Cool
I got a little something done today..
LoooooKing GooooooD!!!!! Are you going to put regular fiberglass insulation over it and then paneling?

x2
They look good on there. I'd paint them a different color if you don't plan to mold them, then you can use the other color for accents throughout the van.
Nice flairs, they look great on the van.
Thanks guys. They will stay bolt on and be body color. I've got a two tone in mind for down the line.

It's going to be Bad A$$
the flares are in the body shop
I built a couple of subwoofer boxes and front door panels yesterday
Likin the door panels. Got templates for sale by chance?
Nice work..did you put the door panels together to cut pattern,or do them separately??
I had a factory door panel from a parts van. I cut the vinyl off leaving just the cardboard. I clamped it down to the wood, traced it & cut with a jigsaw. The donor panel was from a power window vehicle, so I still need to measure & drill a hole for my manual window cranks.
Looking good.Nice job on the door panels.

Nope.. those marks were already on the back side of the panel. Since I'm covering them, I didn't see any need to flip it over.

Huge improvement with the carpet, where did you oder it from i see them on ebay but i was never sure of how good they are .
Huge improvement with the carpet, where did you oder it from i see them on ebay but i was never sure of how good they are .
http://accmats.com/I've bought/installed a few sets from them. They cut them oversized, so you need to trim the edges. They fit pretty good from the get go, but tend to "relax" after the vehicle gets hot in the summer. You will want to lay the carpet out for a few days before installing. The van front kits come with dog house carpet too.
the site is a little different. enter your vehicle's info, then look for the "parts" tab to find front section
Looks good Chuck keep the pics coming !
Cut oversize is Good, the carpet i got from ACC was Too narrow that i got for my Chevy truck a few yrs ago. NEW carpet always makes a Huge difference, Looks Good.
The gray is a good choice..nice work!!!!

Not when it's freezing outside and you've had a few to many. You bring it all inside the van including the fire to keep you warm.
Richard
Not me
Relaxin in it's heated garage..
with Christmas lights
looks good! Love the garage. Mucho jealous lol!
Sweet Chuck...I have Christmas lights in mine too....
nice dodge van & nice color
Nice man cave! The van looks good tucked in there.
Nice man cave! The van looks good tucked in there.
Thanks Charlie.
With it tucked in there like that, I've got room to have all of the right side & rear doors open for interior access. I still have enough room to have work space both in front & behind the van. Now it's time to pull my wiring, add some more insulation then get a little bust with the sub floor/sub wall. Now if my floor would finally come in..
Adding a couple of extra side ribs
Sanded the inside edge of the new ribs down to metal, did the same to the inside of the walls. I sanded the walls fairly slowly while a buddy held a cold soaked towel on the outside to keep from hurting the exterior paint.
Bonded them on with 3M # 8115 and cooked it in the booth @ *180 for a little while.
What are the ribs for? Are you planning on mounting something there?
Remember when it comes to insulation, the more the better in a van!
What are the ribs for? Are you planning on mounting something there?
they will support the ends of the side wall
the cabinet is ready for the stain..
sweet! Good place to hide the cooler!
Very cool Chuck.....
Awesome Chuck
Nice work Mutt
I really like that cabinet.
Good place to hide the cooler!
The cabinet will be mounted right behind the driver's seat with the door facing the passenger side. The lower part will hold the cooler while on the road, then house bedding, clothes & the like once I'm where I'm going. The drawer is 20 x 20 x 3 and is rated to 130lbs. It will hold small stuff that I don't want under the bed. Some electronics will be mounted on the front of it, behind the seat.
The cooler isn't hiding.. it just likes some privacy.
A Cube cubicle is part of my interior plans
I told ya Pete!
A Cube cubicle is part of my interior plans
I told ya Pete!
Yes ya did Chuck and I like it !
Nice Job Mutt!
Those extra strainers are really going to help quiet down the interior. You're going to love having those. I've been doing the same thing, except for using 3M damping material between the strainers and side panels, and welding the top and bottoms.
Have you given any though to adding more roof bows? Right over top of the driver seats is an especially nasty resonant area. I put more bows in and it had a major impact on noise levels.
Just a thought; did you check the vertical seam at the rear edge of the side panels to see if it's actually sealed? If I held a light up to mine I could see light shine right through on both sides - the factory spot welded it and left it at that - no sealer at all! I welded and body panel adhesive sealed those seams.
Got the subfloor in today.. (it's not fully secured in these pics)
The sub boxes will be here. They will create the front of the U shaped dinette/bed

i also used scrap cardboard to kind of measure stuff up to see how it would look before making something. yours is lookin good. nice job
Looking good
thanks guys..
Can't wait to see it at Freeze Out
Cool man, you are making some good progress.
Keep up the nice work!
BTW I also designed my cabinets using cardboard templates

They have been repaired, then shot with a sprayed on filler. I was in the shop @ 7am today sanding them with 80 grit. Still need to sand again with 180 grit, then prime. Then it's time for color.
My new 10" rear wheels are sitting in the garage waiting to go.
This is worse than being a kid waiting for Christmas morning..
Cool,Can't wait to see it
Cool...
I stayed late tonite to do the 180.. done.

Awesome
flare update: we managed to shoot them this afternoon. the color looked good... until it dried. too red. not bad. I may just put 'em on anyway.
as I've been known to say on more than one occasion.. "you can't buy old paint in a new can"
Very true. Cant wait to see them on the van!
well.. I waited until this afternoon to look at the color in natural daylight, uhh.. no. so now the mad rush has begun to tint some new & improved color, find the time to re-spray them, install the flares then get the new rear 10's mounted & balanced.

sounds like my luck Chuck..nothing is ever easy...
Sorry to hear that, it can be a pain to match a 25 year old paint job.
Hurry Chuck Hurry
After trying 2 different lines of PPG, still can't get the right tint. PPG is gonna bring their camera out tomarrow. This blows..
Sorry to hear that, i had the same problem with an 07 lexus. apparently Lexus used 6 different tints of the same paint code depending on the part and the factory it came from.
Sorry to hear that Chuck
It's looking like not flares or rear 10's for Freeze Out. I hope that there is a place to park my Ram in the "bag over my head" catorgory..
oh well, there beer!
Too bad, good thing it already looks bad ass as it is.
Floor area looks nice. Did you get it done? Bummer about the paint for the flairs.
Floor area looks nice. Did you get it done?
Thx, I've got a couple of spots to level before the back ordered floor comes in. The front is screwed down with reflectix under it, the back is glued down to avoid any issues with the gas tank. A buddy helped with the measure & cut. I swear that we had the center piece in & out a dozen times
AH, Forgot it was back ordered.
One tip for next time, if you make a template out of paper first it's much easier when you cut the plywood.
Here we go again...
oooh, shiny! hope it matches this time.
oooh, shiny! hope it matches this time.
don't worry.. it wont.
This is what they look like with paint on them! Nice!

So Chuck ....got the flares on yet ?....did they match ?.....come on.. don't keep us in suspense man ...
flares? I don't know 'bout no stinkin flares!
they're not on yet. my roads have been sprayed with liquid rust prior to a storm that didn't happen. I might be able to take it to the shop some time next week for the install.
Well good luck with the color match....been thinkin bout ya ..
Ok boys & girls.. here is a little update on the interior. But first, a disclaimer.
DISCLAIMER: The carpet & red side panels that you are about to see have been installed on a temporary basis!
Ok. The last time that you saw the cabinet, it had yet to be stained. The main body of it is B/C grade plywood. The door & drawer face are birch. After a test stain, I decided that I didn't like the way that the stain looked on the plywood, so it got painted. We added some distressing to give it a worn look.
& now for a tease of things to come..
& now for a tease of things to come..
this is going to be cool !
Oh man! mo pics mo pics!!
The speedo was starting to dance around below 30 mph. While the gauge cluster was out, I took the opportunity to do an upgrade. I hate bright gauge lighting. I always turn them way down.
So I removed the blue plastic caps that tinted the dash lights. Installed some red 194's to go with the interior color.

how heavy is that stuff Chuck ? the stone that is .
I like the red guage lights! Makes me wanna ditch the crappy green on mine, id like some cool blue, or purple or something. The stone looks awesome, but aint that gonna be HEAVY?
It is on the heavy side, but I'm only bringing it up about 20" (2 rows higher than shown in the photo)
I am loving the build on this !
Some great ideas, like the extra stringers on the wall, glueing the rear subfloor, the rear bench layout, the stone wall, the red dash lights, can not wait to see whats next !
On a side note, with the real stone wall, you will NOT need a lowering kit on that beast! The wall should drop it 2" easy! lol
having real stone is a really cool idea!!!

It's super easy, no need to pull the cluster for the light swap on the 80s Dodges.

Nice work on the build. Cant waite to see it at a truckinn. keep going
Mutt, I just got done going through your thread for the 1st time. It was a great way to spend a morning with a cup of coffee. Thanks for posting it and looking forward to more. What is the actual name of the van color? I knew exactly where those pics were taken on the Valley Pike. I stop by the Tom's Brook Battlefield quite often. I had an ancestor that was wounded there. Have you ever stopped at the "Spring House Tavern" I think it's called in Woodstock? Great place for lunch and a beer. Keep up the great work on your beautiful van. you are an inspiration to many of us. Has she got a name?
Thanks for the kind words Captain. The color is called Graphic Red, the van doesn't have a name.. yet.
It looks we've got the Valley well covered now.. you on the southern end, Wizard holding down the central area & I've got the northern end. I definatly see a couple of get togethers once the weather breaks!

Nice Van Mutt! What rims are those? ..and the size? they look just right. Kind of the direction I wanna go.
Nice Van Mutt! What rims are those? ..and the size? they look just right. Kind of the direction I wanna go.
Thanks! They are Cragar "Soft 8s". The fronts are 15x8, the rears 15x10. I added the Ram center caps with no modifications at all.
Next best thing to brand new. Lucky score, congrats! What rims and sizes did you put on her?
Well, not much progress has been made lately.. Still looking for a visor. Kickin around some grill ideas, looking for some lights to put in the spoiler.
Wait! Now I know why I'm not getting anything done, I've put
10k miles on it since July!
That's what Vans are for...
Nice looking van you got there. It's cool you can enjoy it as you build it.
I have always liked pics of vans in nature, they look so grand. As if they are one!!! Just like the pic Mutt put up. Such a peaceful looking pic.
yet then again I live in the concrete jungle so that might be why!!!!

I've been busy working on my odometer modification. According to NADA's website, the average annual mileage is 15k per year. So the math says that my van should have 360k on it by now. I'm just doing what I can..
OK my friend, I'll wait patiently for more pics. Hope everythingis going well for you.In the meantime I'm still beating the bushes for a Van for me. I know she is out there she just hasnt found me yet. looking forward to more on this great thread.

With all of this talk about cb's of late, here's where I am. I like overhead cb's.... it's a old truck driver thing. I like lots of marker lights, but let's stay on subject.
I've had this under dash stereo mount for a long time. If you pay attention, it's set up to accept a dual shaft stereo.
So.. I want to flip it over & mount my CB in it. It sounds easy enough except there is very little room between the radio mount and the skin of the roof.
I don't want a full width overhead console.
So the question is how can I create a base for this. Thin enough to keep the contour of the metal roof, yet thick enough to be able to attach the overhead console..
What R ya going to do for headliner in cab area?
U would need to know what was going up their to attach the mount ya got....
I put this wood panel stuff up (wanescoat?)a mount like that would B able to just screw to it....
Your current grille is the direction I wanna go. Not thrilled with the 92 single headlight grille I have. Love the quad headlight concept, always have since I saw a van with Monte Carlo quad lights in the mid 70's. I figure 80's stock like yours, black out the grille with the center bar left chrome that matches the lines between the lights. Later down the road when the budget allows, get a tube grille for the center section. Heavy 389 has the right idea by the way. Headliner board can be the place to mount your CB box. Have seen it done and works out pretty well.
Heavy 389 has the right idea by the way.
For the love of God dont say that... He has already proved that he can make lots of stuff from hand made molds and resin.
Do we need to turn him into a monster?
That will look great up there
That is a sweet project you have going on Mutt! I am glad to see I am not the only one putting endless miles on an empty cargo van and getting nothing done (but ideas) on the interior!! You have one sharp looking van there!!
Heavy 389 has the right idea by the way.
For the love of God dont say that... He has already proved that he can make lots of stuff from hand made molds and resin.
Do we need to turn him into a monster?
LMAO @ Mutt>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "Vaninstien" we have created a Monster
BTW this is my 3rd grill
Still have old tube grille......
Thats going to look nice, Thats somewhere on my list of crap to do too, get a cb mounted.
since it's a rainy day, I decided to get some work done..
cut off some pieces of interior trim that I took off the parts van
I started running the wiring for the stereo. The power for the amps will come from my secondary battery which will be mounted in the back, the amps on the front of my cabinet (behind the driver's seat)
In the interest of avoiding possibe interference from the tail light harness, I ran the rear speaker wires over to the passenger side then down the upper side rail.. dropping them down in the rear corners
Hmmmmm...that's a damn good idea. I'm stealing it. ;)
Looks Good Mutt
Im likin that silver stuff on ceiling...
Were ya find the stuff??

No....they sell cans of it in aerosol...works real good !
No....they sell cans of it in aerosol...works real good !
That it does, I've used 3M & Locktite brands. They both work very well. Just don't be shy with the adhesive.. spray the panel on the van & spray the back of the insulation. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and lay the insulation in place. Then move to the next section. Just be sure to have good ventilation and cover the dash & seats so they don't get tacky.
Pete was right.. his Chevy took 9 beers. My Dodge took 10.
Chuck......
Just read your whole thread from start to finish. Nice work Chuck! Gives me lotsa ideas for my 67.
very clean. im afraid of whats under the paneling in my van. Guess ill find out soon.
10 beers????? Is that all?????

Keep it moving Mutt.. Looking great !!! Don't let the beers slow ya down...unless your like I was. A couple beers and I'd go into Chinese overdrive and wouldn't stop till it ran out.
Don't let the beers slow ya down...unless your like I was. A couple beers and I'd go into Chinese overdrive and wouldn't stop till it ran out.
Ok.. I'm busted. I may have stretched the # out a little bit. 10 beers & that stuff would have been on the windows, seats, a piece in the CD player & I'd prolly still have a big silver pillow stuck to my head
Now to create something in the right rear to hold the rear of the side wall & the corner fillers. I had added an additional rib in the left rear, however the right side had the horizontal support for the spare tire carrier. I decided to leave that bar in place and work from there.
I picked up a 2"x48" piece of mild steel, bent it to match the inside contour of the right side door rear hinge pillar. Butt welded the new bar to the upper roof rail, then placed the bar flat against the horizontal support. It got welded there too. Then I bent the bottom of the bar into a 90* and ran a screw thru it into the 3/4" subfloor.
for some reason, I can't edit the third photo... so here it is.
I took some time today to get some other projects behind me. I started with a switch panel that I picked up from a local RV dealer. It will control the rear interior lighting, which will be powered by my second battery. I'm just about done pulling all of the interior wiring, so insulation & walls will be in soon.
I also got around to drilling/cutting out all of the seized grille mounting screws. Since I had the grille out, I blacked out the center section of the core support.
I love those new RV switches. Cool idea to use them in the van.
I love those new RV switches. Cool idea to use them in the van.
& they're not too expensive, $14.95 for the two switch version
Lookin Good Mutt ! Seen this and thought of ya! Done this on mine back in the day for extra rib, made from 2x4...
looks like progress! What was the purpose for the extra rib? strength, or a mounting point for somethng?
What was the purpose for the extra rib? strength, or a mounting point for somethng?
All of the above.. the left wall will have some added weight (down low) and I didn't know another way to support the ends of the walls. The added home made rear rib on the right side serves the same purpose. I'm prolly over thinking the whole thing, but that's what I do

fair enough. Better to be over prepared than under! Im anxious to see the interior with the wall and everything put in it. This is going to be a sweet Dodge!
Yea Mutt has a Great plan,Can't wait to see it done
Hi Mutt, Your van is coming along. Looking foward to meeting you at Spring Thaw. Might have my Ford with me, not completed but we will see how much they have done and if drivable. Like those switches. Can't wait to see the finished van.

Ya never know what you can find @ flea markets.. I picked up a trailer hitch mounted cargo tray. A month later an in truck bed style tool box. That's when the light bulb went off.. (keep your comments to yourself Heavy389)
Why not make a ready to go box to put behind the van at a moment's notice. I notched the sides of the carrier to accept the box.
Installed a couple of nutserts to hold a tag..
I'll add a couple of marker lights & a tag light just because. Between the two items I only have $40, so why not.

i like that idea! Looks great. Heavy, I'll take that hitch!
got to love it when you score at a flee market . Money well spent . The box alone is worth over 100 bucks . Both of those together make a geat combo .
Good thinking there Mutt .
so here we are.. it's all put together.
I can't see a better decal to begin with..
& a few lights.. gotta be safe ya know!
Oh man !.......
Nice work Chuck !
Great score.....Great idea.
and what will the other guys drink. You should bring enough for everyone not just for yourself!!!
I got a liitle work done today..
Looking good Mutt! It looks like I might be the only one with "limited" interior at thaw!
The race is on now! Oh wait Wookie doesn't have any/much either so I gues I don't have to rush! If we stay off the forums for a minute we could be close by thaw!! (thats what I am going for!
) It all takes time! I friggin love that hitch gettup!!
i like the storage idea. nice start on the interior also.
I am loving the box idea, thought about one for Wolf-Den, but have wondered how stable they are as far as wobble at the ends of the box. . . . can anyone shed some light on that for me, how to prevent/limit it or is it a problem? Sorry for the minor hijack.
I load totes on mine and strap them down,Very little wobble
if you have it loaded right
Looking good so far! The box idea is great too!
Knowing that I will need to extend length of the left side subwall, I started to question my ability to measure, cut & align the seam right over the center of a side rib. After stressing over it for a day or so, it came to me. Make a bigger target. So here it is.. even I can make this work!
I'm just trying to stupid proof it Wiz!
had a great weekend down on the river..
____
livin the dream buddy ! had a great weekend down on the river..
Looks like fun but were da river?
Nice pic Mutt. I did the same thing this weekend. Cleaned my place up down on the New River and I spent alot of time down there this past weekend. I'll post some pics on my thread this afternoon.

Stuff you prolly don't want to eat... LOL
& thank you
Ok boys & girls.. now that there is a wall on the left side, it's time for another dry fit.
I am happy to say that things are gonna line up pretty nice. I wont have to trim the stone at all as it comes up between the subwoofer box & the cabinet. The horizontal 2x4 will be placed on the top edge of the deck of the platform so I dont waste a whole course of stone there just to be hidden by the mattress.. the upside of that decision is I will have left over to run that course on the right side of the van.
had a great weekend down on the river..
Looks like a
place just to kick back and relax.
Theres the pics we've been waiting for! that wall is going to look great with the stone and the cabinet!
Yea thats gona look sharp
I like the stones. How high are you going to go with them?

[quote=Mutt]Man I love that, RATE COOL MAN!
thanks! I gotta tell you that it worked like a charm. pull the plug, pull the pin and set it down on the ground. place the pop up so it just covers the box... instant storage locker!
Well.. after stripping off all of the old paint, I decided to spray the whole thing Reface. It's a two part spray on filler. It does a great job, even tho it gets hard as a rock. It can be a pain to block.
now it's time for some sanding, primer & color!
ive always been curious about the spray on bondo. how does it spray? what tip size do you have to use?
ive always been curious about the spray on bondo. how does it spray? what tip size do you have to use?
we sprayed it from the primer gun with a 17 tip. they claim that it doesn't sag.. they're wrong. it's quite thick/heavy. you want to clean your gun asap!!!
good to know. im tempted to try it.
good to know. im tempted to try it.
it really does work well
it's been primed, sanded with 320, sanded again with 600, the bottom of it cut in with flat black..

there are so many projects.. time will tell as money will allow..
now, I feel much more better.. er
Ooooooooooo.
Wow Chuck - just read this thread from start to finish. Fun, fun, fun. Fantastic job thus far.
What's better than free stuff? Free stuff that works out as if it was part of the plan.
I had built a multi purpose cabinet.. it holds the cooler while on the road, storage once I get where I get where I'm going.. and now, another use for it.
My neighbor got tired of seeing this item in his shed and asked me if I wanted it. I simply smiled and said yes.
Ooooo a place to keep the Dr. McGillicuddy's Cherry schnapps cold!

Very nice.That visor looks great....
had a great day down on the river.. my old broke ass looking van parked under the biggest shade tree. my lab puppy romping in the water like there was no tommarow. get a little bit of sun then head back to the mountain. open the climate controled garage open just long enough to get the van inside. shut the door.
now, enjoy a very cold beer while watching the grill warm up from the 68* garage. damn it's cold in here.
it's time to warm up some Omaha steaks and baked potatoes.
i'm gonna call this day a winner!

Well, as we all know, we need to think inside the box. Over come and adapt. I've been looking for swivel seat base for my right front bucket. Something to face towards the back once I've checked into an event.
As the few of you who know me, I love to use as many stock OE parts as I can. For me it makes it look like it could have been. During the late '70 & early '80s Chrysler offered factory front seat swivel bases. So I prolly wont rest until I find the one that I want.
Until then, I won't cut that corner that I have drawn. But.. I really want to turn that front seat around. Then it hit me like a frozen beer upside the head.. unbolt the seat from the stock base and turn it around.
It took me all of two minutes.

Easy there Pete. We don't want to get between work and the beer breaks my brother!
Oh yeah....that's right...
Sounds like that was a cheap and easy solution for your seat.Good thinking.
Now that is a RIGHT SMART IDEA!
Here is a beer for upside your head.
Contrary to popular belief.. I am still working on my van
I'm working on the frame work for my window a/c unit. I'm old, I like cold air. So, here we go..
I started with tracing the shape of the left front window opening. I cut a couple of holes, and taped it in place in the paper to keep it from moving during the process.
Then transfer it to the wood, using the same tape to hold it still.
I only use the best available tools, 3/4 plywood with 80 grit sandpaper..
And here is the first piece.
Cool...yes cold air is nice Chuck....
Funny thing is he didn't say that in January or April
Gotta get goin on one of those for my new van when i get it.
With all of the crazy power outages in my area, my window a/c unit and generator have been in very high demand going from friends house to friends house. So it's time to move on to the next project.
I am adding a second battery to the van. It will be mounted under the floor. I found a battery tray that suited me, then had this box made. It be attached thru the floor & 3/4 sub floor. I will also secure it to the inner rocker/floor extention.
as usual nice work Chuck !
I like your idea. I also plan on putting a 2nd battery under the floor on the frame rail.
Despite the crazy Mid-Atlantic heat.. we made a day trip to the Carlisle All Chrysler Nationals.
Holy shit it was hot!
But we still managed to move ahead. The event was smaller than I have seen in my now 16 years of attending it. There were less vendors, less show vehicles on the infield. There were a few amazing vans in attendence.. but I forgot my camera.
With all of that being said.. one of the biggest things that I wanted to find was a pair of bucket seats. The original seats are in great shape.. but they are vinal.
At the end of the day, I ran across these seats out of an Omni. I was looking for direct bolt up.. so I caved into the crazy price of $35 for the pair
Nice seats
Congrats on the great seat score Mutt!!
Awesome Chuck...man that's what I'm looking for now....omni / horizon seats look killer....
$35 for the seats , holy cow , hope you had gas money for the way home lol.
This reminds me i need to work on my AC mount TOO. The New seats look comfy.
Oh wow...Omni/Horizon seats bolt right in???
They look great Chuck!
Oh wow...Omni/Horizon seats bolt right in???
yes, using the van seat tracks. the bolt pattern from the track to the seat is 14.75 x 12. the steel base of the new seats has a 1" rise compared to the van seat which gave me some much needed leg room.
hope you had gas money for the way home lol.
speaking about gas, I got 14mpg running in the mid 70's with the a/c on.
I found this dog house cover at the local junk yard. It's a factory console that was offered from '94-'97. Chrysler was still using thesame dog house during those years, so it was a direct bolt on install. It's a little bulky looking, but it does provide much needed storage.
I will take it back apart and install the grey dog house carpet to fill in the gap between the floor & the console.
A square cup holder.
A coincidence?
I don't think so..
Those seats and the doghouse cover look great. May need more JD though.
There is plenty left.. that bottle must be 2 years old
.......
Battery box installed, check. Does the battery fit into the box, check.
I bolted it in from inside the van, thru the 3/4" subfloor.
With that finally done, it's time to redirect efforts to the interior.
nice job, thats whats next for mine.
beam me up Scotty
Captain...I'm givin' her all she's got!
Time for the next step
Time for the next step
man I haven't even started on my interior....tired of "workin all the time" .....

Looks good. Ineed to do something with mine. Some under bed storage would be nice.
Man I am envious, First on how neat the interior set up is and how great your van is turning out!!!!
Second, I wish I was doing this to my van now!!!
Can't wait to see the end results!!!!
Richard
The deck is in place to get me thru Keystone, athough it will need to come back out. I need to mount the power distribution center between the left rear wheel well and the back of the subwoofer box. Then pull the sub wiring to the right side and the 12v aux lighting power wire over to the left.
There will be a vertical filler in between the subs that will have a drawer made just like the one in the cabinet.
You may have noticed that the back of the deck subframe has an opening. The deck will have a 36w x 16d hinged lid to allow better access to the storage area.
Very cool,Now you down have to sleep on the cold floor

Excellent Chuck !!!!
That looks really good. Good use of space and the sub enclosures look good.
your wood work is looking real clean very cool .
looks great, keep up the good work.
Real good meeting you this morning Mutt. Hope the wood is what you need. Interior is lookin real good.
Hey Chuck, What happened to your stone wall. I like the gray floor, Bed coming along. I hope to be at Keystone but i can't say yes now. Just been in hospital for the last two weeks. Got burn out from Carlisle. Hope to make it down to GVSR but that also up in air. Van coming along. Going back into shop in September and hope to have it done by GVSR. Then down to Knoxville for Graphics and then over to Cherokee for van show. Give me a shout, maybe we could hook up some weekend.

Real good meeting you this morning Mutt. Hope the wood is what you need. Interior is lookin real good.
You too, I hope that you guys didn't was down the hill.
The color and grain of the board are perfect.. thanks again!
I got the rear access panel done.
I attached additional 2x2 to the subframe so the platform and the panel are nice & solid.
Then I added two vertical supports to the subframe, cutting them short at the top to create a notch. The final support is screwed to the bottom of the panel so that any weight on top of the panel is supported 360* around.
Looks Good Mutt! Lookin forward to seein it when finished.
Just catching up on this thread. Looking good man! I hope to catch up with you at Keystone! You've come a long way baby!!
Lookin forward to seein it when finished.
Me too.. I predict mid 2015! LOL
I hope to catch up with you at Keystone! You've come a long way baby!!
Keystone will be epic! See ya soon..
The cabinet maker doesn't have time to make the new drawer before Keystone, so I installed the panel to fill the hole for now
The new seat in lounge mode
And a little something for the exterior
Dog house carpet... check.
Looks GREAT Chuck. Very professional looking job. Well done.
All excellent work, and you seem to be knocking it out remarkably fast.
I've been looking high & low for a small breaker box for my 110 system. I finally ran across this little gem. A 7"x3"x3" it's perfect.

So is the bed area going to be finished before Keystone
No, I'll just have to Dodge the splinters
Looking great Chuck! Cant wait to see this baby in person.
With Keystone being right around the corner, I'm gonna need to do a little bit of coaxing to help my brother Captain E go north of the Mason Dixon line. Perfect motivation to get my CB mounted.
I like a roof mounted radio, it's an old truck driver thing.. Since drilling into the roof would be bad, I came up with this solution.
Give the inside of the roof a little scuff
I took a piece of 1/2 thick x 3 x 24 poplar and cut in half. I used a table mounted belt sander and radiused the board for a good fit (it matches the underside of the roof's ribs final depth)
Then I bonded the boards to the bottom side of the roof, using the load bar from my pickup to hold things together while it dries. The end result will give me a mounting point that is hidden behind the headliner.
Cool Mutt.Is Capt E scared of Pa?

The under bed drawer is starting to come together. It's been a bitch from word one. It still needs some tweeking. This is where I'm going with this part of my van. A little bit more storage.
And the fold down door faces for the side barn doors
Awesome build...need to get cracking on my panel truck int.
Lookin good brother. Keep it up!
I'm diggin it man! Nice work.

Nate, I can't deny the Wal-Mart foil. However at this point I must confess that I cant afford the good stuff. If I go with the low end Dollar Store foil I will have to spend more than my savings in no stick spray.
What's a broke vanner to do?
Lookin forward to seeing what's next.

Hey! Wake up! Progress is right around the corner. Well, at least I'm buying stuff. The primary interior color is grey.. duh. This is the collection of what I've settled on. There is a wide range of materials.
The secondary color will be a darker red to bring out the original interior color with a touch of an accent/trim color.
For now, this is what I have. Time to get my fat ass back to work!
You have 9 weeks for some serious progress. Lets see it! (whip snapping)
Looks realy cool. I can see where you are going. Some good choices.I think it will look grrrrreeat!

It felt nice to be back in the garage getting things done. It may not look like much, but they were things that needed to be done before I can move forward.
The deck needed to come back up to add some insulation and cut an access door to what will be the fuse/relay box for the secondary battery.
Now that's been taken care of, gotta get working on the rear corners. We decided to do this in stages, smaller pieces. It took a total of 6 pieces, a bunch of hand sanding and quite a few beers. Once it was that was dialed in, we took the taped together pieces and transfered them to a single piece.
Once the deck was back in place it was time to get working on the prep for the stone wall. A vertical spacer was cut to fill in the area where the mattress will be.. no need wasting a course of stone that will be always be hidden. Next was attaching the lath wich will hold the stone.
Here is a final shot for the day. The corner filler is only being held in place for the photo to show where I'm going.
Nice Chuck..
I love watching interiors come together. Keep at it!
Looks good buddy
The corner panels are concave, now I need to figure out how to attach them to the wood side wall and steel door hinge pillar
I hope so, that needs to finalized before I can cut and cover the mattress. It's holding me up.
How about a couple small hinges and some cabinet latches, so you can get in there if you need to access any wiring and also give you a little storage area.
Thanks for the suggestion Ken. I'm good on wiring access, it is below the deck and the lights all screw in from the outside. I really think that the corners need to be fixed in place to hold the intended shape.
How about a set of door panel clips fastened to a few strategically placed tabs then? That will give you a nice smooth look.
How about a set of door panel clips fastened to a few strategically placed tabs then? That will give you a nice smooth look.
If the panels were flat, that would work like a champ. However as they are cut now, I have to push in on the center to get the vertical lines to pull into place.
Well in that case, just drill a big ass hole through the middle to the outside of the van and put a big ass bolt through it!
Finish off with some colored duct tape on the outside.
How much room do you have to get the panel in place?
Could you make up a loop and hook out of some metal strapping to secure the center in place?
______
_______/ \________
Something like this on the van

\ And this on the panel to slide into the loop above.

Well, that didn't quite work. The line on the top of the first thin is supposed to be in between the front and back slashes.
Well in that case, just drill a big ass hole through the middle to the outside of the van and put a big ass bolt through it!
Finish off with some colored duct tape on the outside.
As you may recall, I added a factory rib to the left rear and fabed up my own for the right rear. The back edge of both side walls are screwed into these vertical supports. A couple of months ago I cut two pieces of 1"x1" angle steel and ground the edges until they fit as flush as possible.
I'm gonna weld them into place from hinge pillar to the ribs and see if they will give the needed support.

Don't like my big ass bolt idea?
That should work well then, you can make the hooks for the panel to clip over them.
Ugh.. this may not look like much. These are set in stone.
Yes, I made a stupid pun.
LOL!
_____
....cool Chuck !
I like it!!!!! Looks cool!!!
Nice job so far Chuck! As far as I can see in the before/after pics, if you put a piece of wood (towards you) on the bottom so it doesn't slip out and push down on the top and run a screw in at the top it will hold the shape.Use a self tapping screw if needs be.You can do it! It just takes time an patience.
The stone is going to look nice with the floor!
Loving it

All of the stone is in except the last one. I still need to figure out to attach the rear corners. They will dictate the length of the stone wall, the wood that will cap it and the final bed shape.
Still scratching my head on that one.
Bad A$$ Mutt
Maybe you said already but is your spare under the bed? Looking good man!
Maybe you said already but is your spare under the bed?
It is Paul. I was shocked how much stuff I can get under there. For Freeze Out I the this under the deck..
spare -jack & tools - 10x10 pop up canopy w/stakes and tie down straps - 2 folding chairs - 3' folding table - 3 cases of beer - a bin with extention cords & other misc stuff and there was still a little room left over

It looks like I'm picking up Wizard on my way to your place
The pushin cushion finally came in. It's 4" thick 1839 foam. Once I get the corners done, the foam will get trimmed to fit then covered in grey vinyl. When nap time comes around, a custom fit mattress pad and sheet set are ready to use.
Alright. Looks good Chuck.
Cool Chuck......
I didn't get much garage time this weekend, so I figured that I should do a little something. Long ago I trimed my side door panels from the donor van to see if I liked the idea of an opening. When I had the under bed drawer made, I had two fold down doors made. Just for giggles I installed one of them to see if I like the look or not.
Keep in mind that the material on the panels is what came from the donor van, not the final product.
I like the panels. Is there anything inside the pocket to keep things from hitting the door skin itself? I would be worried a little if something inside the door would move around and dent the door. Looking good however.

I would line the inside of the door skin with either left over tweed from the walls or grey carpet. It would be just on the flat part of the skin, not down in the bottom of the door where it may collect any moisture that may get in there.
Nice and clean , i like the rock accent to . Everything looks like it's done very crisp *
Looking great!!! I see you are not letting the space in the doors go to waist!!! I see too many vans that cover it up and that's it. Great job!!!!!
Are you done yet? Meltdown is getting close!
I give up....

Fuzzies on the door and top and bottom of a shelf?

That's cool, Mutt! Very clever use of a weird space that would usually go unoccupied. Mine are paneled over.

Alright Chuck, I just spent the morning reading this and drinking coffee. There are two major problems that i see: first off it has been entirely too long since i have seen you or the van and second you keep making me want a van of my own.

so what happened to the rest of the build?
It's still going on, it has slowed down due to a unforeseen financial road block.
But you may have noticed that I installed a sweet one piece fiberglass hood just a month ago. One of two known to exsist!*

http://www.leftcoastclassics.com/1979-dodge-van/This one sure looks the same Joe. I called the guy to see if he had any info on the hood, but it had already been sold. He knew nothing about it, he only bought the van to flip it.
Other than a little bit of running around town, my van hasn't seen the light of day since Keystone 2013. I am so happy that Freeze Out is only a week away! I have been getting some more work done on the interior.
I drove mine around in my backyard

show off
Damn it's been a long winter. I've been so busy slinging tire chains and trying to find my driveway, I haven't got much done on Bloody Mary. I did manage to run one more course of stone over the bed, made covers for the 10" subwoofers (to the right & left of the drawer below the bed). They are the same light gray tweed as the sidewalls & door panels. I finally installed the wood doors over the openings in the side cargo doors. They are the same design used on the cabinet and drawer. The hinges are spring loaded so the stay up by them selves without any latches. Once I get the headliner and rear corners done, the last pieces of stone will get cut & installed then a gray weathered board will cap off the stone.
Hang in there Chuck, warm weather's coming!
Chuck...U R not kidding....this winter just keeps giving....old man winter has mother nature by the ass.....went up to 60 today now there calling for a blowing snow storm tomorrow and high of 20 with highs around 8 tomorrow evening and 8" of snow......BUT 50 friday...??? whatever.....

It's getting close. Just to weld on the mounting brackets, do a little fine tuning and paint!

I really haven't done a thing to the van since the grille, except drive it. Here is my camp at GSVR X in Cherokee NC earlier this month. The old girl made the 1020.5 mile round trip with out a single issue.
Looks real sweet,love the grille!
Excellent job my brother.
2015 has gotten off to a really bad start. I haven't done a single thing to the van, but have managed to attend "Freeze Out" in Lanexa, VA. in January and just this last weekend I went to the BVA Birthday Bash in Cortland, OH.
Hanging out with some club members on the show field
The trip odometer shows the VA to OH back to VA round trip
very cool , looking simply sweet there Chuck .
Thanks Joe. Hope to see you at Keystone.
Nice pic Chuck...was a damn good time for sure ...

You know Chuck sometimes you do things TO the van and sometimes you do things WITH the van, and in my opinion you done quite a few nice upgrades in the past few years to skate by a season to enjoy her. Looking real nice!!
