ok , everyone else on here doing body work and painting their vans has inspired me to start on mine ,
May not be painted till next year though .

oh , the only plan for sure is , im going to have the wiper cowl chromed , and id like to have it lowered like Catfish's GMC.
and this is the only thing i have to drive .

So whats the best way to start sanding on this van , the paint is already faded , so it shouldnt be to hard , i just dont want to do it by hand .
I have a palm sander that i think would be alot faster , and i know i have to just watch what i do , can i use 80 grit sand paper or what should i start with , at least to get the edges of the stripes as smooth as the rest of the body .
Posted By: monsterflake Re: My 81 g20 - June 26th 2011 9:49 pm
try a porter cable electric da (dual action) sander. a palm sander is for wood, not paint. the electric da takes the same production paper as an air-powered da, but instead of running a compressor and an air line, you only need an extension cord. you'll need at some 120/240/360/600 grit rolls. it's expensive, but buy the best you can. cheap discs load up too quick, or lose the 'cut' faster.

don't sand it if your not planning on painting it, primer will let water get to metal underneath. next year, you'll be sanding the primer AND the rust off...
Posted By: c1run1 Re: My 81 g20 - June 27th 2011 12:58 am
good luck make sure you have a sealer handy when your done , you don't want to waste your time sanding then find rust next time you start back on your project .

Agreed! If you are just painting, wait until you are ready to paint before sanding.
Posted By: GhostRyder Re: My 81 g20 - June 27th 2011 11:23 pm
how about a little tease , we had a police command post truck come into our shop today with a really cool shade of a dark blue metallic stripe down the side , and i thought , that would really nice on my van with my nice shiny chrome 10 in wheels , so could there be another blue van in the making ? lol

That blue stripe prolly had reflector beads in it as well.

yes ken i think they did .
Posted By: Superbeast Re: My 81 g20 - June 28th 2011 11:51 am
Would be wild to see a whole paint job done with that!
Posted By: wookee Re: My 81 g20 - June 28th 2011 2:18 pm
you really need to look close at the stripes.
see if they are paint or decals.
Allot of conversion companies use decals.
some even used both.
Unfortunately if the stripes are painted they will have to be sanded down to bare metal to get them right.
A good heat gun will lift decal stripes.

Good luck with your project.......

Posted By: Galaxy Re: My 81 g20 - June 28th 2011 3:02 pm
yeah The stripes on my van were painted on and the body guy did not sand them all the down. Even now if you look real close in the right light you can still see where the stripes were.
Good luck on the rebuild!
(blue always looks good on vans)
Posted By: GhostRyder Re: My 81 g20 - July 02nd 2011 2:44 am
yea wookee , the stripes are painted on , ive already smoothed out some of the edges .
Think Im just gonna stick with solid gold , might be easier to paint right now , and I havent done much to it lately , its been to hot here .
I think ive come up with a good name for my van ,what do you all think about " Hillbilly Express " or has that been used?
Posted By: River_Rat Re: My 81 g20 - July 02nd 2011 5:05 am
My brother bought some kind of paint a while back that comes as a powder. And one of the colors he got was a glow in the dark powder. We havnt got to use it yet but how cool would that be to have your paint job glow in the dark.
Posted By: Ram4ever Re: My 81 g20 - July 02nd 2011 10:54 am
Riverratcustomz, there's another possibility for you; a while back someone posted a link to a video showing a fellow painting an entire van mural with UV fluorescent paints, which looked really cool - totally different view between daylight and UV light.

Many of those paint additives aren't ultraviolet stable though, so they won't last very long out in the open.

Keep them pics coming.....

yes galaxy its about the same size as the bench seat not folded out .
I think it will be fine for just me .

Lukester , if you go this route , make sure your paneling is stamped straight , i didnt see it until i got home , the bricks were crooked .

I have used this paneling many times before in the exhibit industry.
And in my experience it is NEVER very uniform.

ok , I think Wookee made a comment about the bed being to narrow , lol He was right , i had to move the half wall forward about a foot , and also moved the amp to the wall . Thinking Im really liking this .

Any one have any ideas on how to mount the seat where its setting?
I think the next step is to work on the headliner and the side walls .

Nice layout, looks much more functional. If ya want to mount the seat there just drill some holes and bolt it down. Just be sure to look underneath first!

i kinda like the half wall idea, still allows visibility out the back windows, and gives you a place to set all your crap when you go to bed at night. for myself, i would get claustrophobic if the walls went all the way up.
Posted By: GhostRyder Re: My 81 g20 - October 02nd 2011 12:22 am
Did a little work on the headliner today , why would anyone run so many wires and not use them , I just ran the wires to the back by the rear ac and cut them then took all these out , they wasnt hooked to anything on either end .
you could have run these out to a trailer and used them , thats how long they were to lol

yeah I pulled 2 sets from the JY for 2 bucks. I use an exterior black latex house paint in semigloss and water it down by half (2 to 1) and use an old terry towel and wipe it on. 2 coats...acts more like a die then a paint. sparingly wipe anything you do with a gloss off or no sand first.

And thinking out loud perhaps rounding the door pannels rather then 90's. It would match the profile of the winders and the curves on the doors.

Got my self an early christmas present , went to walmart and found a pioneer cd player with usb , and 2 6x9's and 2 6 1/2's for only $85.
was wanting a new stereo with the usb so i think i can play songs downloaded to my phone instead of burning a bunch of cd's.

you ever felt disgusted like you didnt get anything done , started on the door panels and one turned out like crap , cut holes for the speakers and the stereos front speaker wasnt working at all , so i did something and they started working but still sounded like crap so i jut took out the stereo and took it all back , then they didnt have anymore of that kind so i just got another sony , but didnt have time to put it in .
and now the door locks dont work .
Posted By: BudVanBeer1 Re: My 81 g20 - January 03rd 2012 2:58 am

seriuosly , no body knows ?

liquid nails aint gonna hold it to the sides. You will have to use screws to hold it to the inside of the van. it would work ok if that was being used for the floor.

liquid nails is more of a sealer then a glue, ive used it inside sub enclosures not to hold panels in place though...i think in that way of use it would eventually seperate and come loose

I see guys screwing 1x's to there walls.
I have never done that have always just screws my plywood right to my side posts.
NEVR had problems with any movement or bowing.

That is looking sweet! You might like the look of covering the sides of the cabinet with the same paneling... start at the front edge and go back towards the outside wall of the van. Cut them to match the radius of the inside wall.. built in!

just a thought smile

That panelling looks really good. Very cool.

......Good idea !.... yay

Some times you just have to stand back and say , Damn that looks good lol
Mutt , I did cover the back of the cabinet , but i think the sides looks just as good left alone , I had 6 of these ( forget what there called ) , but i put two of theme on the side of the cabinet and i might build a wall behind the seats and put two more of them and make a little door way kind of like in the Pirates Of The Caravan .
pics may not be very good its getting dark.

Havent done a single thing to it in 3 weeks except drive it to work .
Posted By: GhostRyder Re: My 81 g20 - June 17th 2012 5:26 pm
ok , so I havent lost complete interest , i need to go out and change one of the front seats around , i ripped the back of it the other day climbing out of the side , then my cell phone fell down inside of it, and going to do a little more to it today or in the next few days .
Posted By: GhostRyder Re: My 81 g20 - September 09th 2012 2:23 am
well seems im not satisfied with the interior again , to cramped , maybe why i havent done a single thing to it in a while, so i found an old wood and metal bar bed frame in the alley , so i will tell you all what im going to do next is rip everything out of it and start over again , all the way down to the floor, and build the bed a little bigger with the metal part of the bed frame as jail cell bars it almost will fit perfectly , always thought the vans with that looked so cool, after all the name of my van is Sanitarium .
Posted By: wookee Re: My 81 g20 - September 09th 2012 4:42 pm
that is a neat thing about a van.
If you find your self unhappy or needing a change rip it out and redo it.
Getting ready to do this my self.......

yeah will have to figure out why my camera on my phone quit working but there will be pics.
Posted By: GhostRyder Re: My 81 g20 - September 23rd 2012 2:54 am
ok, so today I ripped everything out , down to cutting the carpet, the whole back half will still be carpeted , I want to put down a wood floor, like i think Mutt did in his van , with aged fence looking wood , the whole back will be a bed/storage/speaker box with a jail cell bars with a door in the middle.
and the brick paneling on the walls like I started to do before .
Sorry no pics , was getting dark and still having problems with my camera phone , should have some tomarrow .

If you use Sub woofers use screws, no nails, re tighten all interior trim screws & loc tight them as the sub will vibrate them loose....neither of my vans have sub woofers....I just blocked the lows to the 6" and blocked the highs to the 6x9 (6 of each)... 12 speaker SONY surround in each...with more than 1 woofer you will need a amp just for the woofers..not just another channel on the amp you now have....
