ok , everyone else on here doing body work and painting their vans has inspired me to start on mine ,
May not be painted till next year though .
oh , the only plan for sure is , im going to have the wiper cowl chromed , and id like to have it lowered like Catfish's GMC.
and this is the only thing i have to drive .
Good luck, keep us posted on your progress.
yeah, love seeing other g20 builds
So whats the best way to start sanding on this van , the paint is already faded , so it shouldnt be to hard , i just dont want to do it by hand .
I have a palm sander that i think would be alot faster , and i know i have to just watch what i do , can i use 80 grit sand paper or what should i start with , at least to get the edges of the stripes as smooth as the rest of the body .
try a porter cable electric da (dual action) sander. a palm sander is for wood, not paint. the electric da takes the same production paper as an air-powered da, but instead of running a compressor and an air line, you only need an extension cord. you'll need at some 120/240/360/600 grit rolls. it's expensive, but buy the best you can. cheap discs load up too quick, or lose the 'cut' faster.
don't sand it if your not planning on painting it, primer will let water get to metal underneath. next year, you'll be sanding the primer AND the rust off...
good luck make sure you have a sealer handy when your done , you don't want to waste your time sanding then find rust next time you start back on your project .
Agreed! If you are just painting, wait until you are ready to paint before sanding.
how about a little tease , we had a police command post truck come into our shop today with a really cool shade of a dark blue metallic stripe down the side , and i thought , that would really nice on my van with my nice shiny chrome 10 in wheels , so could there be another blue van in the making ? lol
Agreed! If you are just painting, wait until you are ready to paint before sanding.
Big time !
That blue stripe prolly had reflector beads in it as well.
yes ken i think they did .
Would be wild to see a whole paint job done with that!
you really need to look close at the stripes.
see if they are paint or decals.
Allot of conversion companies use decals.
some even used both.
Unfortunately if the stripes are painted they will have to be sanded down to bare metal to get them right.
A good heat gun will lift decal stripes.
Good luck with your project.......
.......Wookee
The stripes on my van were painted on and the body guy did not sand them all the down. Even now if you look real close in the right light you can still see where the stripes were.
Good luck on the rebuild!
(blue always looks good on vans)
yea wookee , the stripes are painted on , ive already smoothed out some of the edges .
Think Im just gonna stick with solid gold , might be easier to paint right now , and I havent done much to it lately , its been to hot here .
I think ive come up with a good name for my van ,what do you all think about " Hillbilly Express " or has that been used?
My brother bought some kind of paint a while back that comes as a powder. And one of the colors he got was a glow in the dark powder. We havnt got to use it yet but how cool would that be to have your paint job glow in the dark.
Riverratcustomz, there's another possibility for you; a while back someone posted a link to a video showing a fellow painting an entire van mural with UV fluorescent paints, which looked really cool - totally different view between daylight and UV light.
Many of those paint additives aren't ultraviolet stable though, so they won't last very long out in the open.
Bought these spindles for my van today , all 6 for only $10
well got back outside last weekend and started on the wall, bed frame speaker box , got the frame built , and the back wall started , went back today and bought some more 2x4's , screws ,and a sheet of brick paneling for the front of the bed frame where the speakers are going to be.
cool. got any pics? im getting ready to tear into mine.
ok i know i said about a week ago id post some pics tomarrow ,but i went back and decided to rerout the speaker wires , then make the whole thing one big storage area , instead of 3 seperate ones, still alot to do .
the little mouse hole is the port? hole for the sub.
i boxed in the 6x9's to , they sound alot better then being open.
Lookin good !
Looks good. Liking the brick look.
Cool speaker box. But is that also going to be the bed?
Kinda small, no?
Looking good.I like that brick look paneling.I was really thinking of using that, but I got some carpet for free,And it was enough to do the walls and ceiling.
Keep them pics coming.....
yes galaxy its about the same size as the bench seat not folded out .
I think it will be fine for just me .
Lukester , if you go this route , make sure your paneling is stamped straight , i didnt see it until i got home , the bricks were crooked .
Lukester , if you go this route , make sure your paneling is stamped straight , i didnt see it until i got home , the bricks were crooked .
I have used this paneling many times before in the exhibit industry.
And in my experience it is NEVER very uniform.
Looking good. I like the ideas

I just about lost interest in it , but i went and rinsed it off and vacuumed it and cleaned it out then realized how cool it looks again , so ill be doing more this week .

FYI, you could pick up a cheap digital for about 30 bucks and still makes decent pics 7.1 MP, flash all that good stuff.
I can't wait to see what you've got going on now! At the same time your interior work is giving me some inspiration as well to finally do mine up as well. First things first, school, job then money!
Here you go buddy.Look damn good....
Here you go buddy.Look damn good....
Thanks Lukester
Finally got the bed, speaker, storage box the way I want it .
Its going to hold a 12 in sub and two 6x9s , on the other side will be a wall with a door into the bed .
lookin good
ok heres the wall in front of my bed , housing the sub and speakers , so far , think i like it this way so this is going to stay . think i better work on the sides next before i go much farther lol.
i dont know how i did it but i got my phone to email the pics lol
IMO....I think the brick wall should stop at the bottom of the window....the wall leads into glass?
If your talking about the right side , i still need to trim it then im going to have the sides covered in the brick also .
Here you go buddy.Look damn good....
in this pic , i put a piano hinge on the back and the center opens up for a storage area .

Get fresh air, look & take pic out of them
Get fresh air, look & take pic out of them, look at the girls in the truck next to you....
its gotta be better than this....

So thats were the wife went that day............
ok , I think Wookee made a comment about the bed being to narrow , lol He was right , i had to move the half wall forward about a foot , and also moved the amp to the wall . Thinking Im really liking this .
Any one have any ideas on how to mount the seat where its setting?
I think the next step is to work on the headliner and the side walls .
Looks great.....
Nice layout, looks much more functional. If ya want to mount the seat there just drill some holes and bolt it down. Just be sure to look underneath first!
Looking good. Use large washers under the van with your grade 8 bolts.
Looks Great! I like the surrounded bed feel, kinda like a mini bedroom in the van.
Thanks , I think I might take that wall on up to the ceiling .
Lookin Good!
i kinda like the half wall idea, still allows visibility out the back windows, and gives you a place to set all your crap when you go to bed at night. for myself, i would get claustrophobic if the walls went all the way up.
Did a little work on the headliner today , why would anyone run so many wires and not use them , I just ran the wires to the back by the rear ac and cut them then took all these out , they wasnt hooked to anything on either end .
you could have run these out to a trailer and used them , thats how long they were to lol
That's just crazy
but now you have some wire for any electric projects you may have..
looks like ur van had some lighting and stuff and owner before took it all out leaving the spaghetti behind...
it had something lol it does have two flourecsent lights , i left the wires for them .
Got back to this weekend , painted some of the old plastic trim , and the rear /ac cover black, if you can see it .
got the right front fender and door primered ,
also made some panels for the rear doors , still need some kind of molding put around them though .
Looking good.....
Really like the "brick look"
they make black door edge molding that looks really clean. They got it at Autozone and other places like that... I like the brick look in yours as well. I see your doing my kinda body work, panel at a time!

isnt your van the one with the brick wall also ?
Looking good my man. I would also suggest using black door edge molding around the brick panels. I have also seen some 1" black plastic edge molding in the hardware store.
Lookin good ! keep at er!!
Looking good my man. I would also suggest using black door edge molding around the brick panels. I have also seen some 1" black plastic edge molding in the hardware store.
I pulled 2 sets from the JY for 2 bucks. I use an exterior black latex house paint in semigloss and water it down by half (2 to 1) and use an old terry towel and wipe it on. 2 coats...acts more like a die then a paint. sparingly wipe anything you do with a gloss off or no sand first.
And thinking out loud perhaps rounding the door pannels rather then 90's. It would match the profile of the winders and the curves on the doors.
Negative. Boots mid is the one with the brick panels.
I believe I started a trend. LOL
I think I actually got some ideas from your van , Boot .
I believe I started a trend. LOL
Damn I am gettin ready to do something in the rear overhead area myself!!! Boot beat me to it!
I believe I started a trend. LOL
I just went through your cardomain , Boot , that is one sweet van.
so how many times has everyone built there vans and rebuilt them before they were satisfied ? lol

I just started mine and there are things I want to do different next time.
cheers
I just went through your cardomain , Boot , that is one sweet van.
Thanks man. Wait till you see the newest updates!
well I thought Id better do some kind of update before my thread is deleted , havent really done anything but have been coming up with some ideas and been trying them out .
I dont have any jy finds , but do alley way finds count? lol
this first pic is a headboard i thought would work great as over head console .
and this one im trying to figure out some way to use these small spindles around the ashtray/cup holder as some kind of cool frame for the stereo and maybe the cb. oh the white thing is my helper lol
.
and the coffee table is in great shape , other then the top has gotten wet , i thought i could sand it down and use it as a countertop for the cabinets im going to try and biuld.
Going to the post office tomorrow Ghost...and those tables may be just what you need to pull off a cup holder. Good luck in your efforts.
sent.
Very innovative. I see stuff at the curb all the time and think, HUM, wonder if I could make something out of that. Looks like some nice wood. Needless to say about the only thing I stop for are items with metal frames. You can never have enough metal laying around
Got my self an early christmas present , went to walmart and found a pioneer cd player with usb , and 2 6x9's and 2 6 1/2's for only $85.
was wanting a new stereo with the usb so i think i can play songs downloaded to my phone instead of burning a bunch of cd's.
Nice GR......
well you have some good items there , sand paper is cheap give it a shot .
sand paper is cheap give it a shot ?

you ever felt disgusted like you didnt get anything done , started on the door panels and one turned out like crap , cut holes for the speakers and the stereos front speaker wasnt working at all , so i did something and they started working but still sounded like crap so i jut took out the stereo and took it all back , then they didnt have anymore of that kind so i just got another sony , but didnt have time to put it in .
and now the door locks dont work .
Breathe deep... again, again...
There, now tomorrow go out there and resume, I'll bet it works out better the second time...

Nice job on the paint bro, looks awesome!
Bummer about the problems. Like these guys stated, sometimes you have to take a step back and center yourself. I'm sending you some good vibes, Hope ya get it all worked out!
ok , got back out today and hooked up my new , new stereo a Sony CDX GT40UW with usb so i can still listen to my phone , sounds great and the front speakers sound just as good as they did before . so i guess the Pioneer did have the front channel blown . but no pics yet was dark when i finished .
I'm glad it worked out for you buddy....
Great job on the install. Glad it all worked out for you.
does happen to all of us...sounds like it came out good though...
And this was a pc of crap I found in the Bone Yard ...it was so bad, holes, no ash cover & wrong color...I felt bad charging him so I gave it to him for postage $17 and Ghost turned into a pc of Black Gold....WAY TO GO GHOSTRYDER....
i started reading that Frscke1 and thought , wth? lol the whole dash actually looks better in the picture , but maybe this summer ill pull it all out again and strip all that vinyl off and repaint it , thinking about running a red pin stripe around it in the little indention .
Thanks for all the comments.
Cool
well here's a pic of the new stereo i put in the other day .
and got one of the door panels finished today .
needs something else though.
and got the bottom half of the overhead console covered.
Nice work !....
Very nice......
looks nice Ghost...check out your local goodwill from time to time and pick up a good thick leather belt..black with heavy stitching and make yourself some door handle straps. easy to do with a rivit tool and a strip of wood. Keep it coming man I'm liking what ur doing.

Wow ghost the van looks killer!!
I had to go back a few pages as well the paint looks great I think a nice set of chrome wheel well trim would really set if off.
Yeah buddy! The van looks great with the new wheels and tires. Did ya notice how different the van rides with the wider tires on the front?

got tired of looking at it without the grille lol
Hey man that looks good. Deff go get the other one.
Looks nice ,
maybe you could have saved some money buy buying both at the same time with the shipping >?
I wish i could find those for round headlights
Looks nice ,
maybe you could have saved some money buy buying both at the same time with the shipping >?
now you tell me lol ,
Hey ghost, did you find that headlamp door at a shop on e-bay or a private individual ? i'm lookin to buy a couple set's of them if possible.
think it was a business , scroll back a couple pages and theres a couple links for these . for this one , it said they had 7 more .
that bezel looks good, will look even better with a billet grille
thats the next plan for the grille .
started cutting the paneling i got over the weekend for the walls , think this stuff is going to look really nice once i get it installed and polished . scored 4 sheets for $40
would liqiud nails work to hold this in place?
You've got a lot done to your rig the past few months, keep up the great work!
yea lol but the fun has just started , i have to take out what i did so i can get the walls done now lol
i have never used liquid nails so i wouldn't know. but that should look pretty damn good inside.

seriuosly , no body knows ?
liquid nails aint gonna hold it to the sides. You will have to use screws to hold it to the inside of the van. it would work ok if that was being used for the floor.
Screws and LN...I suggest !
yea im using black drywall screws and having to put some 1x4's across the frame's to get the curves just right , thanks Highway and Draggnastro.
wait till you all see my plans for the front floor .
I have missed your past few posts, but I must say your van is really coming along nicely.Keep up the good work.I will be looking forward to more pics.
Thanks Luke , i did manage to get one piece put up before the dang batteries ran down on the drill.
liquid nails is more of a sealer then a glue, ive used it inside sub enclosures not to hold panels in place though...i think in that way of use it would eventually seperate and come loose
I see guys screwing 1x's to there walls.
I have never done that have always just screws my plywood right to my side posts.
NEVR had problems with any movement or bowing.
.....Wookee
ok , got the paneling up , all but the back corner on the drivers side , , yea its not brick , but i got it from Craigslist , 4 sheets for 40 bucks and did a little bit on the cabinet i found in an alley lol, it was a chest of drawers but im gonna use it for a closet ,gonna put a shelf in it and double doors . setting right where its at .
passenger side.
drivers side .
the cabinet , I didnt realize it but the color of the cabinet matches the paneling lol
my helper , not much help lol
also got my front side marker lights from LMC
thats lookin good bro. what is that dog? border collie and sheaperd mix?
thanks , blue healer mixed with border collie
ok. i knew there was some collie in there. sweet and VERY smart dogs. ive had many and theyve allways been faithful.
Looking good David...I'm thinking paneling in mine also
..with some shag of coarse
.....keep the pics coming....oh yeah...cool dog !
That is looking sweet! You might like the look of covering the sides of the cabinet with the same paneling... start at the front edge and go back towards the outside wall of the van. Cut them to match the radius of the inside wall.. built in!
just a thought
That panelling looks really good. Very cool.

......Good idea !....
Some times you just have to stand back and say , Damn that looks good lol
Mutt , I did cover the back of the cabinet , but i think the sides looks just as good left alone , I had 6 of these ( forget what there called ) , but i put two of theme on the side of the cabinet and i might build a wall behind the seats and put two more of them and make a little door way kind of like in the Pirates Of The Caravan .
pics may not be very good its getting dark.
Rip the post in 1/2 on a table saw to set the round into the cabinet....IMO
Lookin real good!

Very nice...gives the van an old school look inside.
Not much of an update , but got a few days left of vacation, so i wanted to get some more work done .
put in a little table between the bed and cabinet .

Havent done a single thing to it in 3 weeks except drive it to work .
ok , so I havent lost complete interest , i need to go out and change one of the front seats around , i ripped the back of it the other day climbing out of the side , then my cell phone fell down inside of it, and going to do a little more to it today or in the next few days .
well seems im not satisfied with the interior again , to cramped , maybe why i havent done a single thing to it in a while, so i found an old wood and metal bar bed frame in the alley , so i will tell you all what im going to do next is rip everything out of it and start over again , all the way down to the floor, and build the bed a little bigger with the metal part of the bed frame as jail cell bars it almost will fit perfectly , always thought the vans with that looked so cool, after all the name of my van is Sanitarium .
that is a neat thing about a van.
If you find your self unhappy or needing a change rip it out and redo it.
Getting ready to do this my self.......
.......Wookee
Sounds great.Don't forget the pics.
yeah will have to figure out why my camera on my phone quit working but there will be pics.
ok, so today I ripped everything out , down to cutting the carpet, the whole back half will still be carpeted , I want to put down a wood floor, like i think Mutt did in his van , with aged fence looking wood , the whole back will be a bed/storage/speaker box with a jail cell bars with a door in the middle.
and the brick paneling on the walls like I started to do before .
Sorry no pics , was getting dark and still having problems with my camera phone , should have some tomarrow .
cool! Glad to see you at her again. ive been on hiatus from doing any work on mine with getting our new house ready to move into. Keep us posted!
Pics as soon as you can David.....
yea sorry no pics yet, havent got the camera on my phone to work yet , but i do have the bed 90 percent done and carpet on top of it , scored 2 Rockford Fosgate Punch P1 12 in subwoofers with a 500 watt 2channel amp set in front if it .
Pics as soon as you can David.....
ok , well heres the pictures of the new bed , storage , speaker box, havent been able to do anything to it , recovering from a 5 artery bypass on my heart .
Also scored some 12 in Rockford Fosgate P1 Punch subs , and a 500 watt amp .
If you use Sub woofers use screws, no nails, re tighten all interior trim screws & loc tight them as the sub will vibrate them loose....neither of my vans have sub woofers....I just blocked the lows to the 6" and blocked the highs to the 6x9 (6 of each)... 12 speaker SONY surround in each...with more than 1 woofer you will need a amp just for the woofers..not just another channel on the amp you now have....

yeah I know , im just waiting till i get better so i can run more speaker wires then hook up the single channel amp.
Hang in there David...hope you get back to 100% soon...........
