Haven't seen this. But I guess it could be done.
Extra fan for the evap, drain pan, case/cabinet, basically cutting the window shaker in two. You'd need to watch your tubing size and elevation (or trap it) to ensure oil return.
Why not simply buy a small mini-split? The labor and material needed to convert would be a wash, I would think.
What size unit are you thinking about?
Is it for use in a van and you're looking for a remote (hidden) condenser set-up?

its for use in a 89 g20 shorty. 3-5000 btu would be large enough.
I want an aux A/C that runs off shore power for camping in Florida.
A mini split system is too large ( both in size and btu) for the intended use.
I dont want to mount a window unit in the back door either.
So its either converting a window shaker, using a portable ( that brings in another set of issues) or using the doghouse A/C shown here

I see.
You might look into a small chiller as well. Tandem a couple of old drinking fountains together and add a pump and a water coil...... crazy
I use a rear window mount on our Ford and a front window slide-in for the GMC.

I've wondered several times about a system for shore use that was hidden and used most of the vans factory A/C system. A small 120volt compressor teed into the vans discharge and suction refrigerant lines with, possibly, check valves. A converter (120v to 12v) to run a Flex-a-lite type condenser fan and also power the in-dash fan.
The van A/C would operate normally on the road. But show up, plug up and the 120 would power the aux. compressor and fans. The van would be as cool as driving down the road but without any outward appearance of having shore air.
I've never gotten around to figuring up the size compressor required or airflow needed for the condenser fan.
The refrigerant lines could tee together after the accumulator.
N/C solenoid valves could be used instead of check valves.

Front window slide-in with homemade portable mount. Takes about 5 mins to set-up or take down.

Yup...I bought me a 5000 BTU A/C at Lowe's for about $98. Works great.

I mount it the same way Catfish does.

On the Ford I have the shore A/C mounted in the rear door which stays there year round and while on the road. And you're right it's not very attractive.

I removed the outer case on the A/C and Dupli-colored it to match the little bit of paint left on the van and added a chrome guard to protect the condenser fins. It's sorta like lipstick on a pig but it's functional. laugh
The chrome guard is a bread warmer that Home Depot sells for BBQ grilles. It's the right size and protects the fins really well.
