 I BUILT THE FIRST CUSTOM VAN IN 1964... | Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 5 stranger | OP  stranger Joined: Feb 2013 Posts: 5 | In 1964 I built a custom 1961 Corvair 95 van. It was "safety yellow" with psycadelic panel painting including multi metalic colors with a pin stripe going throung it in a geometric pattern. The beltline was black "lace". I ran custom wheels with fat tires. I did a shag carpet interior including a party table and "love couch".
In 1965 I drove it from Chicago to the So Cal beach's and cruised from Newport to No Cal and NO ONE WAS CUSTOMIZING VANS! Mine drew lots of attention from the beach crowd as a very cool beach party vehicle like the old Woodies were back in the day. Roomy to carry peeps and party supplies and even a few surf boards on top. They were a natural and took off. A few years later I saw the newest hot rod craze, CUSTOM VANS introduced in HOT ROD MAG! All with custom paint, foo foo interiors and custom wheels.
I really think my custom van started the craze. Anybody build a custom van before 1964??
