The original paint job is awesome, but fading anway/ rusting and people have been quoting 10k to paint it!!! I dont have that kind of cash, so what are my options? Maaco? Or does anyone know a good place in Colorado? I thought maybe just get one solid color and then get a mural later???? Either way, if I m going to keep this van, I have to do something about this issue. Any insight will be appreciated. Make sure the paint is not cracking, peeling, etc.. Fix it if it is (that means sanding it off). Fix the rust properly. That means no chicken wire, no duct tape, no crushed newspaper. Weld in patch panels. They sell all kinds of repair panels for these. Once the repairs are done, including any dings and dents, bring it to Maaco and get a urethane paint job. I know they do it. Then, at some later date, you can add your murals without any lifting or cracking. Don't forget to buy the material elsewhere and take that along. | | | Re: Need paint job, low on $$$ | Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 99 journeyman | OP journeyman Joined: Feb 2011 Posts: 99 | Man, thank you! Lots of good info! Just what I am looking for. Some one told me once that if I were to sand the van, that it has to be painted quickly there after. And that to do it in stages??? Not sure about that, but I am assuming he meant that it is alot of surface area and it will take alot of time. The original paint job, which you cannot tell from the picture, has alot of mini rust "dots" all over and that is what worries me. Plus, I just redid the entire interior and a new paint job will be the final touch to get this thing fully restored. | | | Re: Need paint job, low on $$$ | Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 veteran | veteran Joined: Mar 2006 Posts: 1,695 | Yes, it is nearly impossible to give an accurate assessment over the internet. I always ask to see a vehicle in person before I give an estimate on cost. I'm not sure what your advisor meant about doing it in stages. It is best to do it and get it done. Yes, a van is a lot of surface area, but you really do need to paint the vehicle as quickly as possible once you sand it, especially if you hit metal while sanding, but even if you don't.
Rust dots sounds like a complete sanding project, sorry. I wouldn't worry so much about getting it done fast, as long as the rust dots aren't getting any bigger. They can just be surface rust, which if left untreated for a long time, will eventually become rust holes, but that takes awhile. I have seen cars left unprimed or unpainted for years, sitting outside, but those are older cars where I guess the metal was made better.
Don't let it go for too long, however....
Bottom line..... Do it soon, but you don't have to do it today. RipperServing NYC/LI 347-303-7403 | | |
