Hey there. My 70 E has a great running 302 but I would like to find some quick and easy ways to give it just a tad bit more power. I am not looking to make it a monster, just a little more gerrth!

I was thinking a new intake and 4brl carb. Adding headers and side pipes. Simple things like that. Would it work?

Is the motor original stock with no rebuild yet?Headers and a 4 barrel might make it breath better at higher rpms. If you are looking for low-end torque then you could consider a nice truck cam maybe. Have you done a compression test? If the rings are not worn too bad then you can get some more power by getting that number up to like 150-160lbs on all cylinders by getting the heads shaved a tiny bit at the machine shop. But then you might have to retard the ignition timing some to keep it from pinging and/or run 93 octane. If the stock exhaust manifold isnt leaking and you dont care about 4000+ rpms then I would stick with the stock exhaust and maybe get a Flowmaster muffler. nuff of my rambling... I love Vans!!

Welcome aboard Donkey Jaw! Yes it will help, plus all of what Donkey Jaw said. Also, add a high flow air cleaner. Making an engine BREATH adds performance and fuel economy. The truck "RV" type cam is also a good horsepower and torque addition.

If I were to add a cam like that would I not have to replace the rods too?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but replacing a cam is quite a bit of work, are you looking into a lot of work? Replacing the intake is not near as bad, but the cam will require removal of the radiator, grill, intake and entire front of the engine. I did all of this to an engine we pulled and rebuilt, an aftermarket 4 barrel intake and headers will help out a lot, but when you add an RV cam to those, you get the full potential of the other additions. So, for easy, intake, headers, exhaust and ignition upgrades will be your best bet. A cam will require more work than what you are looking for I believe, it's easier in a car or truck, but still a lot of work in them. - Cam is located behind that big timing gear. With a 302 you need to hit the Mustang forums. Those guys eat and sleep mods. They can tell you which headers will give better clearance for an automatic, which distributor is best, good flowing heads, etc. etc. The 5.0 wakes up well with just a few changes and the parts are reasonable. Instead of a cam change look into some 1.7 rocker arms and a timing chain/gear update. Pickup the low pep, easy cruising and a few more MPG. [Big Grin]

THE ONLY PROBLEM WITH A MUSTANGE IS ALOT OF THEM ARE FUEL INJECTED MODS SO WHEN TALKING TO THEM MAKE SURE YOU MENTION THAT YOU ARE CARB.

I agree with maples. Changing a cam is a lot of work. I ended up pulling my engine because the cam was bad. Then took off the oil pan to find out that i had 3 broken piston skirts. Its a good thing i did pull it out because i found many other poblems that would have gone later on.

I went out and bought a complete 302. It already has a mild cam. I have an aluminum high rise with 4 barrel and i have headers. I was thinking of a wipple super charger but not sure yet. I was also maybe thinking of getting rid of the carb and finding fuel injection. But i love the sound of an open 4 barrel passing someone.
