I was told I should document our journey with the van here. Mike and I purchased our 1999 Ford E-150 in March 2014 at a gas station in Carver, MA. It had 86k miles on it, but needed a fair amount of work. Mike talked the owner down to $2400, I went to the ATM, and then we went to dinner to celebrate and write out a plan.

Mike's first sketch of how we wanted the interior. Notice how he drew me robbing him of his body heat.

After a couple bumps in the road we finally got the van checked out by an honest mechanic and got the thing mechanically sound. Our next task was to remove the seats behind the driver and front passenger. It only took 6-7 hours, 10 Sawzall blades, and some sort of socket gun hooked up to a compressor. Mike brought it to his Sunday job today to clean the carpeting before he frames out the bed.

Mike screwed in some test boards to the things (I can't think of what they're called!) we left attached to the floor when we removed the seats.

Next up is the bed, kitchen, and misc small modifications.

T-minus 136 days until the road trip!

I've just joined, too, but you're at the young end and I'm at the old end smile but with the same goal of making the most of our lives. I'm curious about the development stages of your van modifications, as I, too, will be modifying my diesel ProMaster when I get it. Already have a bunch of plans and supplies, just need the van; diesels aren't available yet!! My plan for the floor is to buy horse stall mats which are thick, comfy, good insulation and heavy enough so they won't move; available from Tractor Supply at reasonable cost. I'll be following your posts. I need as many ideas as possible!

Hey LaLaire! We found a TON of ideas on Pinterest! I never went on the site until I started Googling different how-tos for this project and Pinterest links kept coming up. That's actually what led me to this site.

So Mike and his stepdad framed out the bed/storage yesterday. Looks pretty sturdy!!

[Linked Image]

The idea is to have milk crate storage on each side with a drawer at the end of each lane behind the 2 front seats. The end closest to the back doors will be long storage for camp chairs, tents, etc. The bed will be 2 flaps (think of bulkhead doors) that will have a foam mattress on each that will come together into a bed about the size of a full/double. Just beyond the frame you can see our water jug. Mike will build a Boy Scout style patrol box for our "kitchen" that will fit back there.

You might be thinking "wow Mike is doing all of the work!". Well, Mike is embarrassed of my pink tool set! ;) I'll be handling the mattresses and finishing touches and little conveniences like strategically placed Velcro and elastic. I'm also in charge of budget and finances.
