Ok my 99 Astro blew cookies all over the interstate!!!
Local vanner mechanic wants over $4000 (a lot to spend on a $2000 van) to get it running again.
What are my options?
Details: 1999 astro AWD 4.3 "W" Vortec II, electronic 4 sp tranny, 3.73 gears with locker diffs.
From what I hear these late model 4.3s blow the bottom end around 150,000 miles mine is at 149,000
Could I swap in a 5.3 or 5.7 and what do I need to change as far as electronics?

swap a 5.7 (350) from an older van, they done need computers lol and they make direct swap kits for s10's wich are based on the same platform as the astro.. so its preyy much direct swap with new headers

Trash it. Buy something else. It's only an Astro... When you get that many miles on vehicles, it'll just be one thing after another from here on out...

I don't know the details but normally if you swap with the same year from a pick-up or van it won't be too much trouble.

You will at least need: custom motor mounts (from Jag's that run), the ECM from the donor vehicle and new headers.

For me, the best site to get info was the following but it's all TBI related: Lockdoc .

Also, go for the 5.7 litres. Don't waste your time with the 5.0.

I hope this helps you in your quest for info and obviously, the two main sites to get info are: www.astrosafari.com and www.astrosafarivans.com.

For your info, I find that www.astrosafari.com is more "young guys" that are interested in sound systems and air bags and www.astrosafarivans.com is more practical (camping, V8's and 4x4's).

I hate to say it but like Boomer said, move on. Unless you have a lot invested like custom paint or something Astros are everywhere. It's ultimately your choice but I'd look around.

says the man driving a ford! listen it's all up to you....we all know that astro's are cheap and plentiful,,,,,but what most people don't realize is that it is very easy to get attached to an astro/safari that you have had for a while. like bryce said, it is your choice.... how attached are you to this van?
