Ahhh had to share this story about how my 6 year old son came to the rescue yesterday!
So yesterday I was outside working on my 93 Dodge Hi-Top and was disassembling dash trim pieces and painting them. This van has an old security system that the former owner hacked up a bit. When I removed the trim piece with the toggle switch I must've accidentally armed the vehicle because when I got out and shut the door to get a tool, I heard
CLICK CLICK, the sound of my doors automatically locking....
with my only set of keys inside on the drivers seat!! That never happened before and surprised me.
This is a major problem because I had all of the interior door handles disassembled, along with the lock pulls. I pondered for a few minutes how I was going to break in to my freshly painted van without destroying something.
Luckily, to get one of the trim pieces off, I had moved the doghouse back and had at least an access point.
So I jacked the van up, fashioned myself a fishing rod out of a coat hanger and put my little boy on a ladder and told him to tell me where the hook was going and to steer me to the keys. I got under the engine and started fishing blindly, only guided by my son's directions.
After a few minutes, and aided by his directions, I managed to snag the keys on the drivers seat and pull them through the doghouse.....disaster averted! My boy was so excited that he helped as I held my found keys up like it was a huge fishing catch. I gave him a greasy handed high five and a hug for his heroic act for his Dad and THE VAN.
My 4 year old daughter was watching all of this and flatly said: "Daddy, next time you lock your keys in the van...I want to help!"
Vanners in training! Gotta love it.
