Are you tired of looking at a plain old dashpad in your mid-Dodge? Like the look of wood, but not the cheesy insert that came in the Sportsmans? Here is an option and it's pretty easy. I did it this morning in about 1 1/2 hours.
First start with your plain old dash... booooorrrriinnnggg!
(yes i know it's due for a repaint
)
then you go over to your scrap wood pile (if you have one) Mine just happens to be teak.
Find a suitable piece for your project and set it aside. (if you have a Boattail Riviera, feel free to lean it up against the side as I have done
)
Then you make a pattern (or template if you perfer) and trace it on to the piece of wood you have selected (note: I found the inset is not an inch and a half tall the whole way across. It tapers very slightly at the top the last 12 or so inches maybe 1/8 - 1/4 inch or so)
Then (taking care) you carefully cut your wood out in the shape of your template, and sand your edges smooth.
After a little finetuning it should fit the inset nicely. Mine sticks out a bit, but that's what i wanted. It has to for the method I am going to employ to attach it.
Part 2: attaching it, and finishing it.
