He has gotten the whole thing off of the donor van EXCEPT for the spacer on the back of the crankshaft. He can't figure out how it comes off. Is there a special trick? | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87535 December 01st 2005 1:02 am | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 Supreme Master | Supreme Master Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 | A little history. That adapter was used on Dodge trucks prior to 1968 because there wasn't a slant six A727 built yet..that's why they had the adapter in order to bolt a slant up to a smallblock transmission.
Anyhoo, I would imagine that spacer is held in place by the flexplate bolts or it may just be seized on there...a brass hammer and some PB Blaster may knock it loose. | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87536 November 30th 2005 3:17 pm | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | OP Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | This guy has been trying to get the spacer off with a gear puller and hammer etc... No luck. He says he already removed the flex plate and bots, so i am thinking it is just a matter of rust and pressure fit. A couple good whack with a hammer should do the trick but this guy has been working on it for over a month and a half with no luck. | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87537 November 30th 2005 10:04 pm | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 Supreme Master | Supreme Master Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 | I was looking through an old A-100 service manual and I cannot find anything on the plate or the spacer. Only thing I can suggest is some heat. | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87538 December 01st 2005 2:08 am | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | OP Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | I don't think the spacer is anything mor complicated than a metal doughnut. I can't figure out why he is having such a hard time... | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87539 December 01st 2005 7:51 am | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 Supreme Master | Supreme Master Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 | Let me get on the Dodge Sweptline truck site and ask one of those guys. Those trucks used them too. Stay tuned.... | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87540 December 02nd 2005 1:38 am | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | OP Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87541 December 01st 2005 8:33 pm | Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 Supreme Master | Supreme Master Joined: Aug 2005 Posts: 21,211 Likes: 25 | No dice...their stupid website is screwy. Every time I log in, I can't get to the forums. Hold tight I'll ask someone on the A-100 group. | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87542 December 02nd 2005 8:55 am | Joined: Oct 2001 Posts: 28,125 Madman! | Madman! So it sounds as if it's seized. You can tell him to try a little heat, but to focus the heat on the spacer only since that's what needs to be expanded. Too much heat and you risk frying the rear main seal and possibly damaging the bearings due to heat transfer.
PS. When I say heat, I don't mean propane, I'm talkin' Oxy-Acetelene...don't think propane would get hot enough. | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87544 December 02nd 2005 4:37 pm | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | OP Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | Thanks Nate! I figured it was somerthing like that. I will see if this guy is willing to heat it and whack it with a sledge. [ December 02, 2005, 03:37 PM: Message edited by: Reed ] | | | Re: slant six to small block tranny adapter removal (ATTENTION A-100 GUYS!) #87545 December 02nd 2005 7:48 pm | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 Maniac | OP Maniac Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 12,107 Likes: 37 | Okay, get this- I have traded e-mails with this guy and it sounds like he was using a gear puller to try and pull the crank flange off of the crank. The spacer has been sitting on a shelf in his shed for several months but he didn't know what it was. Sigh. LOL!
Oh well..hopefully he didn't screw the crank up. | | |
