1995 Chevy G20 AC Leak Troubleshooting #718104 December 26th 2016 12:23 pm | Joined: Dec 2016 Posts: 25 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Dec 2016 Posts: 25 | Hi,
I changed the AC in my new to me '95 and it only worked for 2 days due to a massive leak. When operating it made me nauseous so I think something is leaking in the evaporator case into the ventilation.
Is there any particular part that tends to go ad or should I plan on replacing it all? The Chiltons manual says to take the dash out, is that the best way to replace the AC or is there another way?
I was thinking of taking it all apart and then driving it to the AC shop to have them find the leak. Any advice or experience is greatly appreciated! Thanks! -- Stevie

The serviceable coil connections are outside the airbox so a leak inside would mean it's in the coil itself. An A/C shop can check it in about two seconds before disassembly by placing the sniffer into the duct outlet. If it happens not to be the coil then that could save you a ton of work. I've worked a lot of leaks on the mid '90 GMs and having the evap coil leak would be rare. The low pressure side is not prone to give much trouble. The most common leak I've found, other than normal O-rings, is the high pressure switch on the rear of the compressor. It's held in by a cir-clip, is actually an O-ring as well, causes the rear of the compressor to be very oily and can be spotted easily. In fact, any leak that large should be, at the least, slightly wet and oily. Even on the low pressure side. If there's no oil visible then a leak test is it order, but they can test the evaporator at the air outlet.

If you have rear A/C, those connections can be checked the same way..... | | | Re:I am overhauling the ac system 1995 Chevy G20 AC | Joined: Dec 2016 Posts: 25 newbie | OP newbie Joined: Dec 2016 Posts: 25 | How do you take off the evaporator case to get to the coil?I know there is a lot of screws. I had put dye in there to check for leaks. the dashboard & shroud are already off. there was so much Freon getting inside it was making people sick. Thanks Jackson
