At Vanfest the host club for the 04 Nats arrived in three motor homes, and one van. They were hard to track down at home cause I personally never saw them outside at the camp, but did see them at the Pavilion. Hard to visit some one if they are inside the portable palace's out of sight.
I heard this may have been the case at another evant.
Hard to promote Vanning if you leave people with the impression you have to start, or end up with a palace on wheels.
I also spoke to pickup drivers at three Evant's this year and none of them intend on getting a van, while evants still allow pick ups in. The inference was why buy a second gas guzzler to attend a few evant's in when you do not have too ???? | | | Re: How do we help Vanning grow and survive? #7204 June 15th 2004 3:45 pm | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 4,043 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 4,043 | Interesting point. For that matter, why have a van when you can take the much more spacious and comfortable motorhome? | | | Re: How do we help Vanning grow and survive? #7205 June 15th 2004 3:50 pm | Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 637 old hand | old hand Joined: Jan 2004 Posts: 637 | Motor home or no motor home, I have been in a caravan with 140 Vanners from Michigan. All Vans no pick-ups. There were 40 cars with us, All of them Detriot City Police, escorting us allong the way. We caravaned from the south west side to Belle Isle park (without having to stop!), where each club put out a spread of food and fed hundereds for free. How many other council's can say they do that on a yearly basis. Talk about making a scene! | | | Re: How do we help Vanning grow and survive? #7206 June 15th 2004 4:20 pm | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 2,699 Likes: 1 veteran | veteran Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 2,699 Likes: 1 | Im very disapointed to hear that the host of this years Nats showed up at Vanfest with 3 motorhomes.
That just doesnt sit well with me. What are they trying to promote? Is this gonna be a Van Nationals or a motorhome nats?
Our we Vanners or what? I feel very negative about the nats all of a sudden. | | | Re: How do we help Vanning grow and survive? #7207 June 15th 2004 4:36 pm | Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 12,898 Vanner | Vanner Joined: Jun 2003 Posts: 12,898 | Dan,
I expect to see you there to meet you !!!
I am going to party with the Vanner's that are there. As I was recently reminded, I said to the effect of, "I will talk to the Vanner, but will choose to ignore the ride"
It will not stop me from coming, however it will make an interesting point at Green Bay, WI next Feb. | | | Re: How do we help Vanning grow and survive? #7208 June 15th 2004 9:22 pm | Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,426 36th National Truckin Chairman | 36th National Truckin Chairman Joined: May 2004 Posts: 1,426 | Life in vanning has taken many turns for us. Most of us can sit here and say we remember when there were 800 vans at a local truckin, we had more than 275 members at one time, we never shunned anyone at an event, we support our nationals no matter where it was and after the NSVA and Rocky Mountain van era, who put it on was no big deal because it was our nationals and by gosh we support it. Ok the motorhome thing is a little annoying, but it is still our nationals. We also supported new organizations with new ideas because , what, when your younger you dont worry about all the political details and clicks and the wanna be's who live for their 15 minutes of fame every day? Go back to the basics here. Vanning stems from what? The love of the van. What we can do with it, in it and around it makes us unique but along with this has come a very diverse group of people that have stemmed into vanners who are becoming our own worst enemies. Example; a group tried to have a truckin at a fairgrounds that it just so happened to have had a trike rally. Well this club had talked with the trike folks and decided to sort of combine the show, NOT the event. Well as the story goes and goes, by the time one of these folks made it to a local truckin to attned the event, they were labeled a biker club and not a van group. Sad. The event was ultimitely scrapped due to the spread of bad rumors and bad publicity. You see, we are our own worst enemies. We cant even get out of our own way long enough to realize that no matter how long you've been vanning or how old you are, or how many patches you have you are a vanner if you love vans and go to van runs and love people and good times. It all falls into perspective.Who ever decided your a puppy for more than one event anyway. Plus if you are newer to vanning than most, dont wish you could have been there a long time ago and started in the 70's like some of us (besides we are fried by now anyway haha), be glad you got started when you did and appreciate the time you are having in vanning now. Trikes having a show in the same fairgrounds as vanners? So what, cool. All truck shows with truck and vans? So what, cool. Vans entering into car shows? So what, cool. Vanners pulling together as a family, supporting the quality of our nationals our local truckins and not worrying about other vanners coming up with new ideas if it is to help the vanning movement? PRICELESS! This is what is going to promote vanning. The people. Start having fun again. If your group is causing problems, become the solution. When you hear negative comments , give them a positive. If you have a complaint, always have a solution. Don't persecute the next vanner for not going to as many truckins as you, greet them with open arms when they make it to any!You want to see vanning grow? Look inside yourself first. Ask yourself, what have I done to make vanners fell like they are my family and what have I done to help vanning survive? Kinda scary. I haven't yet met these vanners and I don't have issues with a vanner that owns a motorhome or trailer. As long as they don't suck up all the water and electric. I bring my 28 foot trailer when the wife goes. But in my opinion (and that's all it is) I'd draw the line at letting vanners in without a van. As previous posters have said, the core of VANning is the van! Now I know that there would be a fair number that wouldn't attend van-ins if (God forbid) partying wasn't allowed. I'm sure for a few, the van is just a pass to get in. It takes all types. But it's encouraging for me to read posts here and talk to vanners at events hearing about their efforts to keep us going. It doesn't matter what you DID, it's what you're DOING NOW! | | | Re: How do we help Vanning grow and survive? #7210 June 16th 2004 4:22 pm | Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Nov 2001 Posts: 3,302 | Good point Denim, if truck-ins didn't allow drugs, I'd still come, if they didn't allow booze, I'd still come, if they were only one day and you couldn't stay over, i'd still come. If they didn't have vans, I'd stay home. I can get together with my friends any time. Vanning is about vans, for me. | | | Re: How do we help Vanning grow and survive? #7211 June 16th 2004 4:33 pm | Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 4,043 pooh-bah | pooh-bah Joined: Dec 2000 Posts: 4,043 | OOOOH! Legal Disclaimer! Truck-ins do NOT allow Drugs! Drugs are BAD!
Whew! That should keep the DEA off our backs for a while.... | | |
