@honkeytonkspecial: have you started painting the van? I'm interested in how it turned out. I'm kind of in the same spot and don't want to sell a kidney to paint a van that doesn't *absolutely* need it. My paint, except for a couple rust spots, actually looks pretty decent but it's tired (original paint from '86) and two-tone and makes the van look kind of . . . lame. I want a basic, gloss black that I think will look clean with the chrome bumpers and running boards. BTW, I'm in Northern VA.

I have used Plasti-Dip in the past, And I know it does not hold up or look as good as paint, it is way less money to paint a full size van with it. Best part is that it peels off if you do not like it. and will not hurt the paint under it! I just started on my Street Van in Hemi orange Plasti-Dip will have more photos when done

@ vansolo
I haven't started painting the van yet...unfortunately....I'm still sanding and scraping all this crappy paint off! We had some rainy weather and theres too many projects to have the van in the garage full time right now...
Mine is an 86 dodge ram.

All I can say is sand your van with 400 until therevis no surface untouchedl the waxes that have been used on your paint for years contain silicones and those will cause fisheyes. So personally you can still go to a auto body supply and buy an acrylic enamel RM is a good brand and is very cheap. You will still need a gun but if you ask around you can find a garage with a compressor. Just wet down the floor and tape everything good you will have to think about the door openings and if you want to pant them as well which takes a lot more paper and tape. Think your project out well before you tear that first piece of tape. Get a good plan of attack start with the top and you can actually finish it and tape it off before you move on to the sides but the top is the worst and how to cover it without the overspray dull areas. A van is like painting a frieght train and you will find out when you start without a plan. So think it out !

Cheers!
