Maciej, did you ever find out what kit was needed to fit an aftermarket steering wheel ? i'm looking to do my 94 & it has the airbag too . i don't care about not having the airbag , just need to know what will fit .

I removed the airbag and changed our '94 to a smaller Grant GT wheel about six years ago. I don't like the 1st gen bags as I've seen them do more harm than good. But that's just my 2%. The later (smart) bags save lives.
IF (is a big word), IF I remember correctly I just went back to the last year without a bag and used that kit. Or I just got the standard GM kit. I do remember it was a bolt on once the original wheel was outta the way.
If you decide to pull it, read Rippers post earlier and be very careful.

I laughed out loud when I read about the "airbag police checkpoints"! Plus, if the guys on this forum aren't sure if your van should have had an airbag, the chances of Johnny Law knowing are slim to none... If your steering wheel doesn't say Airbag on it, it probably isn't there. I love the old, retro chain steering wheels, but I worry about safety in an accident. I think that would do a lot of damage to your ribs, etc. I usually remove anything the Feds put on just to spite them! Life is too short to worry about "airbag police checkpoints" or the "running one bias ply tire and one radial tire on the same axle, police checkpoints"! How funny! All the while they don't notice the open beer in the cupholder...

I took the broken wheel with airbag off of my van a little over a month ago, and replaced it with a stock Chevy wheel from a '91 G20 conversion... It's a 4 spoke (9 & 10; 2 & 3 positions)...

When I took the airbag out, I was outside the van leaning in, and cut the wires at the bottom of the column... I did it on my lunch break at work... At the end of the day, I pulled the bag out of the wheel, and disconnected the plug from it...

Later, I took the 'airbag' light bulb out of the indicator on the dash...

I had a grant adapter kit on my '84 with a real Superior wood wheel...

nothing on the Grant site i lke , gonna start looking at chevy cars for wheel i like & see if it fits .....

That's my $10 junkyard steering wheel, just need to clean it up a little more...

i think the first gen astro's had a wheel like that too .
