This may not seem like much but if you have squealy vent windows, you'll think we are awesome! From 1971 to 1978 the Dodge Full Size Van looks the same but 78 is the "bastard" year. They changed a ton of crap for one year only before they changed the whole doghouse in 79. The Cannonball Run Ambulance is a 1978 Sportsman so we deal with the craziness all the time! Basically, from the back of the front doors, all the way back, it's the same van from 71 to 03. In the late 90's Dodge finally made the vent window solid (unable to open). The downfall, they eliminated the chrome divider between the vent and the window. We had a hunch that you could drill out the mechanisms that make the vent work, open up the solid vent, use it with the solid gasket and finally remove the squealy vent window. Well, I might be the only van owner on Earth that has done this BUT IT WORKED! I have the only, 1978 Dodge Van on Earth with solid, chrome, vent windows..... Now, at speed, Jim and I don't have to listen to them squeal!

Please excuse the fingerprints, I was a tad excited and took a photo before I cleaned them.

Have fun, it can be done!

Windows- they're what make a van worth owning!

okay, let me get this straight in my feeble head. . . .your wing no longer opens or squeals ? NICE ! What years had this option ? I would like to do this to my 1992 Dodge B-250.

I love my vent windows! They only squeal when they are closed and I am travelling at highway speeds. If it's too cold or wet to open them, I just stick a quarter between the latch and the chrome strip to seal them up a little tighter and voila! No more squeal!

Howdy,

For my application, speed, I couldn't stand listening to the windows squeal, the police scanner, my co-driver, the cb and everything else.

The bottom photo is a 1997 Ram Van, with solid vent windows (non-chrome).

Nice. I never use my wing windows and I get tired of hearing the air and a little water splashes in when I wash it. Might have to try this myself. I think the wing windows are a bitch to put in.

First thing I thought of when I read this thread was your thread on tightening it up Reed.
