Well after giving me 1.5 years and around 60K miles of basically trouble free service, it is time to give her some love. It is gonna cost me about $1000.00 over the next three months, but by spreading it out like this, I don't have to remove food from the family table. ( I hate living on SSI ! )

Any way, here is the list:

1) 4 new tires ( BFG Rugged Trail in 235/75/15 ) $600
2) 4 new shocks ( Monroe Reflex Light Trucks ) $200
3) Strut Rod Bushings $20
4) Trans Mount $10
5) Motor Mounts $10 each
6) Sway bar link & bushing kit $20
7) Tune Up ( plugs, wires, cap, rotor, air & fuel filter ) $100
8) MAYBE replace the U-Joints ( got to check them out and decide ) $16 each

The list is long, but not major. Some of this is being done as preventative, some is needed, a few are BEYOND needed ! lol

Trans mount not bad, even flat on your back in the drive way. . . . two or four bolts usually.

Just get a jack under the tail, lift JUST enough to take tension/weight off the mount, loosen bolts, raise about .5 to 1 inch, pull out bad, put in good, settle down the trans, tighten bolts, drive. . . .thats the BASICS of it, but you get the idea.

As for paint, I hope to address that at tax season this year. . . got a pretty good bid from Macco.

Sand to factory primer/bare metal, high build primer, sand, reprime with standard primer, sand, paint. . . .all for $1250.00

Fleet White. . . . We thought about Hot Rod Black, but a big metal box with no AC in flat black, not good !

At some point, we are gonna tackle the interior too, and that will be hardwood floors and blue denim upholstery on the walls , door panels and seats. I plan on trying to build a overhead console too, basic aluminum frame with denim covered panels. We want to add a pair of bench seats and table, that will drop to form a bed also. Until we figure all this out, the stock conversion van interior works for now.

I got the stereo figured out and going now too, It is a little different from MOST systems, but it works great I think. I have a I pod Classic 80Gig, hooked to a Audio Control Overdrive Plus-2 line driver, then to a Alpine KTP-445U Power Pack (45x4 @ 4ohm), then to Alpine 6.5 SPS-610 Type S speakers front and Alpine 6x9 SPS-619 Type S rear. not a hard pounding system, but very clear and easily heard at 75mph with the windows down. So far I have the I-pod, and amp, hooked up to the factory speakers, speaker upgrades are next, then the line driver. I might add a Clarion EQS764 Eq so I can add a second source and have a master volume control too, we shall see on that one. If I add a second source, it will be a Sirius/XM Sat radio.

So many ideas and plans, now I just need $$$$.

John- I see you quoted $10 for the motor mounts and trans mount. Do not buy the cheap DEA motor and trans mounts coming out of India. The rubber that they use is total crap and will fail in under a year. You want NOS or Anchor brand mounts.

Rockauto.com is your friend for cheap parts. Moog for the suspension hard parts, HD rubber for all bushings except sway bar bushings which can be polyurethane (universal off-the-shelf at Autozone).

those are Anchor mounts, but thanks for the heads up on them.

I sourced all my prices at Advance Auto . com

I swear by rockauto.com. Bought a set of Monroe sensa-track shocks for my '83 from Advance Auto, they were about $45 each. Rockauto has them for less than $30. Low overhead=smaller mark-up.

I shop on Rockauto and then plug in the parts numbers to Amazon. Often Amazon beats the price and has free shipping. Not always. I appreciate Ra's website and have given them plenty of business.

Not sure how Monroe reflexes ride compared to KYB Gas a Justs, which are pretty firm, but I had some Monroe Sensa tracs on my front end briefly which I despised for their squishy ride.

I saw a news story about how Amazon uses strongarm tactics to force small businesses to ship with Amazon and then forces the small businesses out of business. I refuse to use Amazon now. I still prefer local independent parts stores to Rckauto, but there are so few small indecent part shops left where I live and so often now Autozone and Napa don't have the parts i need that I usually end up going to Rockauto anyway. Sad but true.

Don't forget the rockauto 5% discount, either!

Can't believe Maaco quoted all that work for that price. They did my van in '09 and charged me $1050, I think it was, and didn't do squat. Paint looked ok at first but after a few days then a week it looked bad. They say they will do a lot but unless you watch them, which I'm sure they won't let you, I'd be cautious as if they would actually do all that. I've had 2 paint jobs from them and they skip out on doing a lot of the basic things. But each shop is different so if you do get it done I hope they do as they say. Good luck on all the fixes. Over the last month on my van I've done a complete tuneup, fuel filters, strut rod bushings, tranny mount, power steering pump and gear box, and had a shop do a timing chain, water pump, new belts, hoses (radiator and heater), and resealed the intake. Definitely killing my credit card.

I have a buddy who works at the Macco I am going to, plus I am doing alot of work myself first, removing the bumpers, tire rack, ladder, roof rack, emblems, ect. . . . that saves alot of work/cost right there.

Plus the previous owner painted JYD with rollers and brushes, and the paint comes off at the carwash, a little at a time ! lol so they are going to have to at least sand it to the factory paint and remove the conversion van sticker stripes.

I am not looking for a show paint job this go around, just a good 15 foot paint job. . . . you know, looks good from 15 foot ! lol

Unless you hate the color or there are bondo or rust repairs, you might want to see what you can do with the original paint. A good polish and wax can do wonders. And $1k buys a LOT of Meguiar's products.

Where it has the flat black peeled off, the stock paint looks like hell. . .

Well, maybe a thorough pressure washing and sanding will be a fun family project! Buy a couple cheap palm snaders off Craigslist. I would do all the prep work you can before you send it off to Maaco. Even doing the sanding and taping will let your money be put towards a better paint job.

We have talked about that, even considering a KRYLON paint job, sand it down to factory paint, maybe even down to factory primer, then prime it,sand smooth (er) and then paint it. I did a bike this way years ago and it came out ok. . . not great, but good.

When I was a kid, one of my sisters bought a 65 Sedan De Ville for a few hundred dollars. My family patched the rust holes with fiberglass and painted it Krylon Safety Purple. It was awesome.

When I was in high school my first driving car was a 78 Volare station wagon that I also painted Krylon safety purple. But I put a couple couts of Krylon clear coat on it. It, too, was awesome.

The paint jobs were OK for kid cars, but you are right, not the way to go for a nice van. Still, doing all the prep work can make a much better paint job and cut down on the costs.
