I was aiming for a 20 foot paint job with a roller and got a 30 foot job. Oh well, mines no show van.

Unless you hate the color or there are bondo or rust repairs, you might want to see what you can do with the original paint. A good polish and wax can do wonders. And $1k buys a LOT of Meguiar's products.

Where it has the flat black peeled off, the stock paint looks like hell. . .

Well, maybe a thorough pressure washing and sanding will be a fun family project! Buy a couple cheap palm snaders off Craigslist. I would do all the prep work you can before you send it off to Maaco. Even doing the sanding and taping will let your money be put towards a better paint job.

We have talked about that, even considering a KRYLON paint job, sand it down to factory paint, maybe even down to factory primer, then prime it,sand smooth (er) and then paint it. I did a bike this way years ago and it came out ok. . . not great, but good.

When I was a kid, one of my sisters bought a 65 Sedan De Ville for a few hundred dollars. My family patched the rust holes with fiberglass and painted it Krylon Safety Purple. It was awesome.

When I was in high school my first driving car was a 78 Volare station wagon that I also painted Krylon safety purple. But I put a couple couts of Krylon clear coat on it. It, too, was awesome.

The paint jobs were OK for kid cars, but you are right, not the way to go for a nice van. Still, doing all the prep work can make a much better paint job and cut down on the costs.
