Hi all, I finally got around to taking our '79 Maxi camper out for a spin and found the brakes took a LOT of effort to get the van to stop. When I step on the brake pedal, there's a hissing noise from under the dash for as long as I put pressure on the pedal. My guess is there it some kind of vacuum leak that the operation of the pedal opens up which closes again when the pedal is back in its "rest" position.

Any thoughts on where to start on this? My guess is a seal in the master booster has gone bad but I'm not sure if that makes sense.

Thanks in advance,

Greg

You need to replace the vacuum power brake booster. Your local parts store should be able to order a reman one in for you.

Regards,

John

kinda thought that must be it, thanks for the replies.

I wonder if it's worth changing the master cylinder while I'm at it.

Years ago the buster came with the master on it. I would change both.

Not any more. Now boosters and master cylinders are sold separately. If you replace the master cylinder be sure to bench bleed the new one before you install it.
