I'm not mechanically inclined at all, so I'd need a van that is reliable and somewhat modern (I have to have air conditioning that works). However, the problem is that I don't really like any of the modern van design. I love the classic Chevy G series tore van and the interior design which seems to be more for a single dude. I'd like the bed and a table for my music equipment (electronic musician).
Anyway, I'd there a way to have the classic body and inherit but with a modern engine? | | | Re: Modern technology but classic look? | Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 233 Likes: 2 enthusiast | enthusiast Joined: Aug 2013 Posts: 233 Likes: 2 | Simple. Buy an old van that you like. Then buy a wrecked newer van or truck with the drivetrain and accessories that you want. Then take out all the new stuff and put it into the old body. I can advise you on doing this with a chevy G van with a Express parts van. I did not use the ABS, airbags, or AC from the newer van, but it easily could have been done. 1992 Chevy G20, 110" wheelbase, Mark III conversion, L31/4L80e swap, Express wiring harness.

They arn't tire shredding power monsters but I can cruise 75 fully loaded in my '95 and still get around 17mpg on the highway. Unloaded its more like 20mpg. Ive owned 6 G20s over the last 10 years ranging from 78-95 and my 89 and 95 have proven to be the most bulletproof its just a matter of finding one that isnt thrashed. From time to time I have strayed from the path of the G20 but i always end up selling whatever Im driving and going back to a G series. Im sure I'll have many more questions soon enough. | | | Re: Modern technology but classic look? | Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 19 stranger | stranger Joined: Mar 2007 Posts: 19 | It takes some looking around. I was able to find a super straight 75 chevy. It was completely redone with all new technology. Worked over 350 with tuned port fuel injection. Auto with overdrive. All new suspension front and back. Evan front and rear air. Runs and drives like a brand new vehicle. It took some looking around to find it. Actually found it here on VANNING.COM | | | Re: Modern technology but classic look? | Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 1,475 old hand | old hand Joined: Feb 2009 Posts: 1,475 | Chevy kept the same body style from '71-'96 more or less unchanged, just differences in the grill/headlights/taillight and emblems. You could get one from the '90s and swap on the '70s grill, headlight and taillights and 90% of people would never know that it was a newer van.
Same for Dodge, '86-'93 same body style as '79-'85, but with fuel injection, overdrive, most had A/C and power window/door options too.
Ford, look for late '80s-'91 (with the long hood). Same body as '75-up.
Or like Ransy suggested, you could add AC, fuel inj., etc to an older van, but it would be easier and more cost effective to "back-date" an '80s or '90s van to a retro look,
Welcome to the site, and good luck!
