I've only ever experienced vapor lock on one vehicle, an 84 E-150 with a very tired 351W. It just sounds like the problems CJhardcore is having are temperature related. The van starting right up after it cools indicates a heat soak related or vapor lock problem.

It could be something like a ignition coil failing and not working when the van gets hot. I have had that happen on Mopars before.

That is a Carter BBD that has been remanufactured (a big strike against it), has had the bowl vent tube capped (why?), is missing the electric assist to the choke thermostat in the intake manifold (again, why?), and may or may not have the distirbutor vacuum advance hooked to the right port on the carb (can't tell for sure with the picture).

That carb does appear to be leaking from each division in the body castings (air horn, float bowl, throttle body) and that carb should be checked for wear in the throttle shaft to carb body area. BBDs are notoroious for the throttle shaft wearing the metal body of the carb out and causing vacuum leaks.

The BBD is a fine carb when in good working order, but good ones are getting hard to find. If you beat the bushes you can probably find a NOS BBD or its bolt-on replacement, the Holley 2280.

Holy Hannah has that poor carb been well used and hacked!

What's the deal with that manual (choke?) cable? Is your vacuum kick actuator shot?

I suppose your charcoal canisters are broken or missing is why the bowl vent port is plugged. Do you even have a vented fuel filter by the fuel pump?

If that's all hacked up there's a fair chance you may also be pulling a hard vacuum on your fuel tank which would starve you for fuel; the next time you have nasty starting issues try partially opening your filler cap and see if it behaves any better.

With that level of system abuse, I wonder if you've checked the transmission kickdown linkage adjustment? It can also do really nasty things if it's too far out of adjustment.

Reed, does the BBD have any small vacuum ports along the bottom front which need to be capped off like the 2280 does?

The reason I ask is that those caps tend to be made of simply awful cheap rubber which cracks and leaks... often in less than one year. The new replacements I've seen in the HELP! sections at the local auto parts stores around here look more like colored Vinyl, which should hold up better.

It may be well worth spraying some carb cleaner around the base of this carb to see if the RPMs change - if so there's a vacuum leak, perhaps from the base not being tight, from a loose or missing hose or cap, or from a warped base.

If memory serves, there are no small ports than need to be capped. There is a long port between the fuel mixtures screws that is part of the charcoal canister, but it should not be capped, even if the charcoal canister is not used.

CJ- I may have a decent used and non-remanfactured BBD you can have. Let me check my garage/parts stash.
