If you still have an oxygen sensor on your exhaust and no cat then that is probably the problem. If your van runs fine then don't worry about it.

Last update hopefully with some success!

after I put in the new EGR and was still getting the code I decided to do a complete tune up. Delco plugs, wires, MSD cap & rotor (better heavy brass terminals), fuel & air filters, and an oil change. I also put a bottle of cleaner through the gas tank.

I just drove from Chicago to Ann Arbor MI (500+ miles) this weekend. I got the light again at first on my way to MI. While there and on the way back 300+ miles I did not get a code. Must have worked it self out. Keeping my fingers crossed. I think my MPG went up also.

As far as the o2 sensor goes, from what I have found on the OBD1 cars they only have one, and its before the CAT and is more for sensing temperature?

On these TBI computer controlled motors after you do something to the block it takes a few miles for the computer to reset its self, learn what has been done and make adjustments. Now that you have it there .... keep reg maintenance... at the slightest hint of a problem, a noise, a loss of power, loss of MPG any thing that is out of the norm. Fix it. If the computer senses a part going out it makes adjustments, which may make something else run a foul. Then you have multiple problems. Makes a diagnosis a little more difficult.
